- "Welcome to the oasis village, Wellspring!" —Townsperson
Wellspring is a town in Octopath Traveler, as well as the setting for Chapter 3 of both Olberic's and Therion's stories. It is a vibrant hub of trade, with its oasis providing succor for travelers of the deserts of the Sunlands and all the towns in its vicinity. Civilization has flourished in this place since ancient times.[1]

The town is beset by lizardmen, who seek the water of its oasis, but the city is defended by a foreign swordsman from the Highlands. Close to Wellspring lies a black market, founded by a merchant born in 1586. Masks are used to provide anonymity to black market shoppers; the manager of the black market is also the tavern keeper in Wellspring.[2]
Description[]
Wellspring rests around one central oasis, a wide pool of shimmering water whose beauty and surrounding palm trees lend the village a vibrant desert aura. While golden sand dunes glitter on the horizon and dust sweeps in from the outskirts, Wellspring’s central oasis transforms the location into an ideal rest stop for weary travelers on their way. This settlement is characterized by its battered buildings, its decorative cacti, and the presence of domesticated animals such as camels and hens.

Olberic Chapter 4 complete
Etymology[]
"Wellspring" is comprised of "well" and "spring," both terms suggestive of the water-drawing fount of the oasis on which the city is born. "Wellspring" can also be used to describe the original, abundant source of something, in this case water or the vibrant trade that the oasis enables.
Trivia[]
- The price to restore reputation in Wellspring is 4,000 leaves.
- According to the bio of the Old Man (b. 1557), Wellspring used to be "little more than a few houses clustered around an isolated oasis," but the town has since grown into a prosperous way station of the Sunlands in less than c. 60 years.
- Similarly, Captain Bale's biography describes Wellspring as "a vibrant hub of trade" to which many roads lead.
- The Tavern Patron carries a bottle of quality wine from Rippletide. He also comments when Allured, "You go well with this brew."
- The woman who works at the town's inn spends most of her time serving meals to soldiers and other customers. She comments when Guided, "Your faith brings color to your cheeks! Would it do the same for me?"
- The Guard standing in front of a house stands watch over a building full of three black market merchants, including the market's founder. He claims that one needs an invitation to enter, and his biography notes that he "keeps the peace in a small black market that attracts many eccentric merchants" that he himself prefers to stay away from.
- The red-clothed merchant offers financial backing for Path Actions: When Allured, he offers to become Primrose's benefactor, and when Challenged he notes, "You seem to know your way around fights. I would back you in the arena."
- The Townsperson in front of the other guarded house is, according to his biography, a conniving man who swindles naive townsfolk for a few leaves. Drunken soldiers and weak-willed gamblers are his favorite masks, as they are less likely to notice the myriad ways in which he manipulates games of chance.
- The Old Man standing by a fruit stall dramatically yells, "Jackanapes!" when interacted with. He keeps "getting grapes from that old woman," whose gifts appear to be driving him crazy.
- One of Wellspring's guards transferred from Marsalim. According to his biography, he respects Captain Bale's ability to bring together soldiers from all across the land and mold them into a cohesive unit.
- Evidently, Wellspring's guards are used to receiving challenges from the townspeople; Challenging one of the soldiers elicits the complaint, "Everyone wants to challenge one of the watch. Get in line."
- After his quest is completed, Wellspring's Sweet Tooth invents granulated sugar, seeking a way to extract the sugary juices from beetroot and preserve them in a sand-like form easy to keep and use in cooking. His biography presents his grand discovery: "-Stillsnow Snow Sugar- This fluffy snow-white additive is derived from the essence of beets and dissolves easily into mixtures. Even a single pinch is enough to impart a mellow, flavorful sweetness. Culinarians use it as a secret ingredient in a wide variety of foods."
- The Sweet Tooth includes sweetness-related comments in all of his Path Action responses. Of particular note, when Challenged, he says, "I'd be happy to, but only if I can eat something sweet beforehand..." and when Provoked, "Huh!? That thing's after my sweets, I just know it!"
- The Staid Soldier recognizes Olberic when Challenged: "I know how strong you are. Indeed, our fight shall go down in legend!"
- The Injured Scout sports a unique skill: "Too wounded to move..." which does nothing. His Path Action dialogue is also amusing; Parting Ways elicits the line, "Ow-ow-ow... Ah! I need to get back to work!", Challenge, "H-huh!? Can't you see my wounds...?", and Provoke, "Y-you expect me to fight that thing in my condition!?"
- "Oasis in the Sparkling Sands" shares a theme phrase with "Sunshade, City of Pleasures." Since the music plays in an oasis, Yasunori Nishiki sought to create a sound that evokes the Arabic desert, while also containing a certain freshness. He asked that the fiddle be played with a conscious ethnic feel.[3]
