"Ohoho! You're not the first, you know. I've seen countless like you. So many have tried, and every last one died a tragic death. And so it would be my honor to put you back in your place!" —Before battle

Warden Davids is a character in Octopath Traveler II. He serves as the Chapter 1 boss for Osvald.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Warden Davids wears a thick, fur-lined cape and hat to stave off the cold. He wields an enormous club, which he uses to liberally punish troublesome prisoners.

Personality[]

Warden Davids is a cold, uncaring and sadistic prison warden, often taking great pleasure in tormenting and punishing the inmates under his care, even inadvertently helping to end the life of an inmate as he was mining. This is also illustrated by his battle sprites, which shows Warden Davids with a sadistic grin. Warden Davids, despite his brutish behavior, is also viciously intelligent, figuring out Osvald's escape plans and sabotaging them by cutting a rope ladder before Osvald and Emerald could reach it.

During his tenure as prison warden for Frigit Isle, Davids received Osvald as an inmate after he received a life imprisonment for the murder of his wife and child. To stop him from using his magic, Davids had Osvald fitted with a muzzle of his own creation. For five years, he would abuse and torment Osvald and the other inmates as well as having them mine for materials in the prison mines for extra profit.

Story[]

One day, he and some of the guards overheard another inmate screaming for help due to being mugged by Osvald for a notebook he stole earlier. After entering the cell, administered a beating to Osvald, and leaving, he brought him and the other prisoners outside to start work on the following day. While outside the mines, the same prisoner from Osvald's cell began to succumb to the extreme cold and collapsed, prompting Davids to beat him repeatedly, demanding him to get back to work, only for one of the guards to inform him the prisoner was already dead.

A few days later, Davids came across Osvald and another inmate talking while working and proceeded to beat them both before being cut short due to the prison inspectors arriving.

Davids would later receive word from his subordinates that Osvald and Emerald were sighted in an underground passage beneath the prison. He immediately let the inspectors know of the escape attempt and went to head them off, sabotaging the escape ladder as he did so. There, he confronted the two escapees and engaged them in battle with some of his guards, only to be defeated and mortally wounded by the duo. Before dying, he told them both that there was no escape from the prison.

Shortly after his death and Osvald's escape, the inspectors had the prison shut down and all of the prisoners relocated due to the poor treatment they received from him.

Etymology[]

"Davids" is a variant of the Hebrew name "David," which means "beloved." Ironically, Warden Davids is universally despised among the prisoners of Frigit Isle, rendering his name a bitter irony.
