"First time in Tropu'hopu, traveler? Maybe I could show you around." —Islander at the town's entrance

Tropu'hopu is a coastal town in Octopath Traveler II. Located in eastern Toto'haha, this island resort serves as the setting for Agnea's Chapter 3 and one of Partitio's Scent of Commerce quests.

According to the Mercantile Manuscript, Tropu'hopu was established by the first continental pioneers to settle on Toto'haha. The harbor town's proximity to New Delsta caused it to be developed as a resort for the wealthy. In addition, the town produces many luxury goods, such as delicious coffee beans, and now serves as an important stop along the trade routes between eastern and western continents.

Etymology[]

"Tropu'hopu" is not clearly derived from any given words in real-world languages, beastling, or Solistian languages. Split into the components of "tropu" + "hopu," it may be an evocative name whose sounds conjure associations such as "tropical" and "hope," which would refer to the town's island location and Agnea's hope-laced storyline respectively.

On the other hand, "tropu" could be taken as an abbreviated form of the Greek "trópos," from which the term "trope" is derived. As "trope" refers to common devices used throughout storytelling and art, it could refer to the theater-based associations of Agnea's Chapter 3. "Hopu" is a word in the Māori language that generally means "to seize, catch, or capture," while it can also be used as a verb meaning "to mark something" (as in a game) or a a specific type of net in Hawaiian. These uses would reflect Tropu'hopu's fishing-based economy.

Trivia[]

  • Tropu'hopu is one of six towns in Octopath Traveler II that has its own musical theme, the others being Oresrush, Flamechurch, Cropdale, Roque Island, and Ku: Castle Town.
  • The price to restore reputation in Tropu'hopu is 6,000 leaves.
  • Tropu'hopu's sailors wear accessories made with shells by a local islander as protective amulets.
  • The biography of the Artisan on Tropu'hopu's east side mentions his niece, who works as a shipbuilder but keeps her colleagues at bay, possibly referring to Terry.
  • Among Tropu'hopu's townspeople are a scholar from Montwise, who studies the island's ruins, and an elderly man from the Crestlands who moved for a change of pace.
  • A retired free diver who holds the record for deepest dive lives in Tropu'hopu.
  • The Young Man who lives on the town's west side used to be a deadly mercenary known as the "Fiend in Black Steel" who had killed over a hundred enemy soldiers in battle.
  • Both Tropu'hopu and Merry Hills display white banners featuring the sun and the moon, albeit in different designs.
  • On the west side of Tropu'hopu lives a Cat Connoisseur, a woman inexplicably irresistible to cats. Her earliest memories are of being surrounded by cats, and rumor has it she can even understand their language. Her house contains eight cats and Cait Powder. (A ninth cat can be seen eating a fish outside the provisioner's shop.)
  • One of Tropu'hopu's residents, an eight-year-old boy with sea-colored eyes, has a mysterious intuition for how the weather and waves will change. Even the most experienced sailors cannot match the accuracy of his predictions, so he is held in great respect.
  • One of Tropu'hopu's islanders was saved from drowning by a Beastling, who can be found drinking with him on the beach at night.
  • When composing the music for Tropu'hopu, Yasunori Nishiki drew inspiration from the bossa nova style of Final Fantasy VII's Costa del Sol theme. He composed Tropu'hopu's theme with a languid atmosphere, as if the air were flowing lazily past. Additionally, in order to create a sense of consistency for the region as a whole, he added kalimba arpeggios reminiscent of the themes for Toto‘haha and Ochette.[1]
