The Sundering Sea is the sea that separates the western and eastern continents of Solistia. In-game, it is represented by the field location On the Water.
At first, the Sundering Sea can only be crossed at a number of anchorages, but once Partitio's Scent of Commerce in Tropu'hopu is completed, players gain access to the Grand Terry and can sail the sea at will.

Trivia[]
- A unique battle theme, "Battle on the Sea," plays during random encounters while sailing.
- The Sundering Sea is the only location with regular, non-shadowy encounters during the Journey for the Dawn.
- When composing the field music for the Sundering Sea, Yasunori Nishiki sought to express the excitement of setting sail for uncharted territory and the sparkling beauty of the ocean. The sonorous, brilliant trumpet melody followed by the horn is meant to conjure up images of a sailing ship boldly sweeping through the waves, with an added a sense of leaping - yearning to soar higher and higher to the opening melody, another way to evoke the drive to push onward, come what may.[1]
- Because "Battle on the Sea" fills a musical category that didn’t exist in the original Octopath Traveler, Yasunori Nishiki was able to stretch out and enjoy writing this piece. He based its overall sound on Celtic music, writing the melody with Viking music in mind. Since triple meters have a high affinity with the rhythmic feel of dancing on the waves, he composed the melody of “Battle on the Sea” with a 6/8 melody, arranging it for acoustic guitar in the lower register. This low melody creates a sense of wildness or roughness, like men singing while the sea rages. "Battle on the Sea" also incorporates technically demanding elements such as lightning-fast violin phrases, unlike the classic structure of the more traditional battle themes.[2]
