Story[]
(I don't think this is where I should be going at the moment...) The following section contains potential story spoilers! |
As one of the three Creatures of Legend, Tera resides in the subterranean Bed of the Titan below Crackridge. Long ago, he saved the land from a volcano, shattering the mountain with a blow and reducing it to the nearby valley.
After a fierce battle against the Dark Hunter which left both parties nursing grievous wounds, Tera enters hibernation to recover.
He has been slumbering for eons, though his occasional movements are so intense they cause earthquakes to the town above. After Ochette wakes him up in order to get him to help with protecting Toto'haha during the Night of the Scarlet Moon, Tera is upset that his slumber has been rudely interrupted and lashes out at the hunter, forcing her to fight.
After his defeat at Ochette's hands, Tera calms down. He agrees to accompany her to Toto'haha, where he smashes a great rift in the ground in order to destroy hordes of Shadow-tainted monsters.

Etymology[]
"Tera" is derived from the Latin word "terra," which means "land" or earth." In addition, the prefix "tera-" (used in numbers to represent one trillion) stems from the Greek word "teras" or "teratos," meaning "marvel" or "monster." The former meaning represents Tera's association with the earth, while the latter speaks to his immensity.
Trivia[]
- Tera has the largest sprite of any story boss in the Octopath Traveler series, excluding Vide and Galdera. His horn extends into the turn order menu at the top of the battle screen.
- Although Tera is only referred to as "it" in the game's dialogue, he speaks with a masculine voice.
- The differing dialogue between Ochette's two potential companions changes Ochette's approach to awakening Tera. If Mahina is present, Ochette takes the initiative in howling at and then shooting Tera. Mahina becomes flustered, chiding Ochette for her reckless behavior. If Akalā is present instead, he advises Ochette to awaken the beast, calmly directing her to shoot Tera as a final measure.
- Tera bears some resemblance to a tortoise, having a stocky body and a shell-like carapace of rock.
- Tera shares some traits to Bowser, in that they're turtles that use fire and are easily short-tempered.
