"That, you must find out for yourself, though I must warn you: there are few things worthy of our faith." —Temenos, when asked by Crick if there is anything he can have faith in

Temenos Mistral is one of eight playable characters in Octopath Traveler II. A local Inquisitor who questions even the gods, he sets off to unveil the dark mysteries of the church.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Temenos has a pale complexion, blue eyes, and silver-white hair. He wears a long dark turquoise robe with gold accents, and seen to be wearing similarly colored pants. Over his robes he wears a white buttoned-up cape. He wears black shoes and is usually seen carrying a golden staff, named the Staff of Judgment.

Personality[]

Temenos is calm, composed, and often rather lazy, though he is also incredibly intelligent and relentless in his pursuit of truth. He distrusts most authority figures, except for the Pontiff, which leads to his constant squabbling with the Sanctum Knights. Since Roi's death caused him to doubt the Sacred Flame, Temenos has no qualms openly criticizing the gods, much to Crick's dismay. His motto is "doubt is what I do," and his suspicions lead him to follow the truth wherever it leads.

Temenos often exercises his snarky wit by making sly remarks, mocking others' naivety, or teasing people (especially Crick) mercilessly. Temenos's view of morality consists of various shades of gray, as he does not hesitate to coerce information out of bystanders or to tell white lies. His actions can occasionally come across as mean-spirited, though he views his jibes as means of helping others realize their flaws.

Temenos rarely displays any strong emotions, keeping a cool head no matter what his investigations uncover. His serenity does break down to reveal hints of anger, however, after Crick's death. Nevertheless, Temenos processes his grief rationally. He is devoted to fulfilling the last wishes of his predecessor, Roi, by exposing the church's terrible secrets, whatever it takes.

Prior to Story[]

Temenos and Roi were foundlings adopted together by Pontiff Jörg. At some point during his early life, Roi fell very ill, though he recovered when Temenos prayed for his recovery. Both friends would eventually follow the path to be clerics, appointed as inquisitors by the pontiff.

Five years prior to the start of the story, Temenos was visited in his home by Roi late at night. Roi said that of members of the church he could only trust Temenos and the Pontiff. He presented the Darkblood Bow, found while inspecting the church interior with the Pontiff, and said he would hide it, advising Temenos to carry on his mission should he not return. Before running out of Temenos's home he warned him of the church's dark secrets.

Story[]

Chapter 1[]

Temenos recounts the tale of Aelfric's battle against the dark god Vide to an audience of young children. Despite his theatrics, he ends up forgetting the end line, much to the amusement of the children and the disappointment of Sister Mindt. Shortly afterward, the Pontiff Jörg requests for Temenos' presence at the cathedral. After the Pontiff leaves, Temenos and Mindt see him talking with a theologian named Lucian.

On his way to the cathedral, Temenos encounters a religious insurgent proselytizing to a crowd. He is interrupted by a young knight named Crick Wellsley. Although the insurgent attempts to take Temenos hostage, Temenos manages to subdue him on his own. Upon noticing Temenos' Staff of Judgment, Crick realizes that Temenos is the Inquisitor. He informs Temenos that he is on his way to talk with the Pontiff, so the Inquisitor decides to go with him.

Upon reaching the cathedral, they find the door mysteriously locked. Temenos manages to find an alternate route into the cathedral by interrogating nearby citizens, including Vados the Architect. Once inside the cathedral they find the stained glass window shattered and the Pontiff dead, with large claw marks across his back. Before they have time to understand what happened, they are attacked by the arcane beast who killed the Pontiff. Fortunately, they manage to slay it.

Crick is horrified by the tragedy, but Temenos suspects foul play. He examines several key pieces of evidence to deduce that the pontiff's death was in fact a murder. While explaining his theory to Crick, Temenos is lead to the cathedral pulpit, where he finds a book laid out to a specific piece of scripture. Temenos believes this is significant. Before they can examine further, however, they are interrupted by Deputy Cubaryi, who takes over the investigation of the Pontiff's demise and tell them to leave without taking anything. Before leaving, Temenos asks Crick to do him a favor.

After Pontiff Jörg's funeral, Temenos and Crick convene in the library to discuss what to do next. Crick was unable to find any leads, however Temenos reveals that he took the book he had found from the cathedral without Cubaryi's knowing. Inside is a note with a mysterious phrase: "And soon, night shall fall." While unsure of its meaning, Temenos is certain that it holds importance, and thus holds onto it.

After leaving the library, Crick is informed that he has been reassigned. After reflecting on their friendship, Temenos announces his decision to track down the Pontiff's true killer. He determines he must start by tracking down Lucian, the last person known to have spoken with the Pontiff. He bids farewell to Mindt, setting off to discover the truth behind this tragic incident.

If Temenos isn't your first choice, the same insurgent from earlier is seen confronting Temenos in Flamechurch. Defeat the heretic and Temenos will join the Party.

Chapter 2[]

Temenos travels to Canalbrine, seeking Lucian. He is distracted by a crowd huddled around a church. Investigating, he learns that Canalbrine's apothecary has been murdered, and wonders whether it is related to the Pontiff's assassination. Temenos runs into Crick, who has been reassigned to Canalbrine. The two discuss the local apothecary's murder. Temenos is convinced that Lucian is connected, partly based on Lucian's book, The Final Night, which leads him to believe that the scrap of paper might be the Pontiff warning them about the theologian. Temenos also reveals that a townsperson informed him of the apothecary meeting with Lucian days before his murder. After an interruption by a hawker advertising a performance by Hermes the dancer, Crick insists that they question Lucian. Despite his doubts, Temenos agrees.

Lucian does not respond to their calls at the door, prompting Temenos to suggest using brute force to enter his home. Reluctantly, Crick forcibly opens the door; but what they encounter inside upsets their plans, as Lucian is found dead. Temenos uncovers a number of Lucian's notes, including those concerning the Keepers of the Flame in Canalbrine and a re-appearance of the phrase "And soon, night shall fall." There is also a book describing the order in which the gods must be addressed in prayer: Bifelgan, Aeber, Draefendi, Brand, Sealticge, Alephan, Dohter, and Aelfric. Finally, he finds a memo claiming that praying in the opposite order will invite a curse. Wondering whether it's connected to the murders, he recounts the victims leading up to Lucian, realizing they represent the gods in the prayer, going in opposite order. Thus he deduces that the next victim must represent Sealticge - a dancer.

Recalling the hawker, Temenos and Crick rush to the tavern where Hermes is about to take stage. Through interrogation Temenos unveils Vados the Architect, identifying him as the murderer. Vados attempts to assault Hermes, claiming to be a servant of Vide, "the one true god." Crick stops Vados before he can kill Hermes. Vados flees to a Sacred Guard Ship currently docked in the harbor. There, the duo corners and confronts him. Upon defeat, Vados recites the phrase "Surrender yourself not unto silent dusk. For the light shall fade." They are interrupted by Captain Kaldena, who places Vados under arrest.

Crick finds Temenos pouring over Lucian's notes. He informs the cleric that he will be escorting Vados back to the Sacred Guard headquarters in Stormhail. Temenos notes that he has two paths to follow: go to Stormhail to interrogate Vados, and follow the path unveiled by Lucian's notes--a path to the Fellsun Ruins in Crackridge.

Crossed Paths, Part 1[]

Temenos returns to Flamechurch alongside Throné Anguis and is talked into investigating a rumored treasure called the Alpates within the cathedral despite Temenos suspecting the thief has ulterior motives. After coercing a former carpenter and guiding him into the pontiff's chambers, he revealed a hidden door behind a bookshelf, where the duo proceeded through, leading them to the cathedral's upper levels and to a hidden room, where they found "Alpates", who was actually a girl from a clan of the same name whom the pontiff was secretly keeping safe. After Alpates gives them a fragment of a cloudy mirror when she sensed flames in both of them and asked them if they hoped for the dawn, she departed, leading Temenos to question if letting her leave was right choice of action.

Chapter 3 (Crackridge Route)[]

Temenos receives a cold reception upon entering Crackridge. The townsfolk refuse to give him information about the Fellsun Ruins and seem hostile to the Order of the Sacred Flame. He notices one of them wearing a crescent moon necklace. Temenos spends the night at the inn, where he reflects on his friend Roi's warning. In the morning he is approached by a traveling woman named Reiza. She asks him to escort her to the outskirts, as he is a cleric of the Sacred Flame. Temenos agrees and goes with her through the Abandoned Road.

Reiza attempts to flirt with Temenos as they come to a stop. Temenos rebuffs her and states he has deduced she is from the village thanks to her crescent moon necklace. Reiza then attacks Temenos, but Temenos deflects her. Reiza reveals that the townsfolk belong to the Moonshade Order. Noting her hesitance to kill him, Temenos suspects that Reiza may not truly wish to hide the ruins. Reiza escorts Temenos to the ruins, revealing that their real name is the "Kal Ruins", built by the Kal, Keepers of the Flame. She states that guiding Temenos here is her chance to atone but does not specify what for when questioned.

Investigating the ruins, Temenos finds a note vowing revenge upon the Moonshade Order. He notices several human bones scattered about, increasing in number further into the ruins. Temenos follows the trail, deducing that the Kal people were killed by the Moonshade Order. At the end of the trial is a mural telling the tale of Kal, who stood against the Archmage D'arqest, and warning of a darkness residing in the Nameless Village. Reviewing the note, he notices a statement about the Book of Night, which contains the phrase "Surrender yourself not unto silent dusk. For the light shall fade." The book was missing some pages that were later recovered by Vados. Temenos surmises that the murderers were a result of whoever wrote the note seeking out the missing pages.

Reiza is still at the entrance when Temenos returns from the ruins. When asked who her leader is, she recites the phrase "Surrender yourself not unto silent dusk. For the light shall fade. And soon, night shall fall."--teachings of the Moonshade Order, not the Keepers of the Secret Flame. Realizing that the pontiff most likely wanted to highlight the connection between the Moonshade Order and the Book of Night, Temenos continues his journey, determined to unveil the truth.

Chapter 3 (Stormhail Route)[]

After reading a letter from Mindt, Temenos makes his way to the Sacred Guard headquarters, where Crick quite literally runs into him. The duo venture inside headquarters only to learn there is no record of Vados's arrival. To Crick's dismay, Temenos suggests that it was the Sacred Guard itself who omitted Vados from the record, and that they should thus be investigated. The two split up in search of clues.

Temenos finds a trail of blood outside headquarters. At the same time, he is approached by a mysterious hooded figure. Crick protects Temenos from the person's attack. Rather than identifying themselves, the hooded figure runs away. Temenos and Crick then follow the trail of blood to a corpse--Vados's corpse. Temenos deduces that someone within the Sacred Guard must be orchestrating these events. Unable to deny the truth, Crick has a crisis of faith. When he brings up the previous Inquisitor, Roi, Temenos notes their similarities. He also states that Roi's last words to him sparked a distrust of the church and fuels his search for the truth. Though Crick pushes Temenos to continue working on the investigation, Temenos calls it quits for the day. He retires to the inn, bidding Crick a good night.

The following day, Temenos notes a crowd outside the Sacred Guard's headquarters. He passes through the crowd and sees Crick's corpse. He notices a scrap of paper in Crick's hand with the words "Surrender yourself not unto silent dusk. For the light shall fade." Using his special vision, he follows a specter of Crick to a secret passageway that leads him to a chamber full of forbidden tomes. He is approached by Cubaryi, who says Temenos knows Crick's murderer quite well: Kaldena, the mastermind behind the events that have lead Temenos to this room. Now that Temenos knows too much, Cubaryi must end Temenos's life as well. Temenos defeats her in battle; however, when he demands to know what Kaldena's plans are, Cubaryi refuses.

Temenos attends Crick's memorial. Reflecting on their friendship, Temenos vows to repay the debt he owes to him.

Chapter 4[]

Temenos follows Kaldena to the Nameless Village in Toto'haha. Guided by the words written on a scrap of paper wedged in the notebook he found at the ruins, he proceeds to the Wandering Wood and gets lost. He searches for a guide to help him through the forest. This guide, a beastling named Shirlutto, helps solve the riddle of the woods, allowing him to explore further in. Before entering a cave, Shirlutto explains the origins of the beastlings and the true nature of the rite Kaldena wishes to perform.

Within the Rifted Rock, Temenos finds what remains of the Sacred Guard: some of them transformed by the shadowy power, and others slain by their former brethren. Ort, who survived Kaldena's attack, begs Temenos to stop her. Deep within the cave, Temenos confronts Kaldena. He concludes that she is the last surviving member of the Kal people. Impressed by Temenos's deductions, Kaldena requests that Temenos join her. He refuses. Reflecting once more on Crick, Temenos raises the Staff of Judgement to begin the interrogation. When Kaldena attempts to demonstrate the power of the Shadow, she is consumed and transformed by it. Temenos defeats the monster that Kaldena became.

In the aftermath, Temenos exposes the truth, which results in the the Sacred Guard being stripped of their powers. However, he is now confronted with new questions: he knows not what the goal of the Moonshade Order is, nor the meaning of the Shadow the Sacred Guard was supposed to keep from the world. After bidding a farewell to Crick and Roi, Temenos sets off in search of new answers.

Crossed Paths, Part 2[]

At Conning Creek, Throné and Temenos notice a commotion. They overhear talk of a murder. Upon closer investigation, they find that the victim is Alpates. The two decide to investigate her murder, discovering a map on her body that reads "the Cavern of the Moon and Sun" with the note "Where day meets night." Having determined that Alpates likely gave her life to conceal this information, the duo make for location shown on the map.

They find nothing there but a riddle. Temenos uses his special vision to solve it, zeroing in on a stone that both the sun and moon illuminate. There they find a not reading "To those who hope for the dawn" and another fragment of a cloudy mirror, which connects perfectly to the fragment Alpates handed to them. Outside the cave, Temenos tells the story of Alpates, left behind by the Flamebringer to consort with humans. Temenos surmises that the Alpates they knew may be her descendant, recalling a part of scripture detailing a mirror that was made from the original Alpates' body. Throné, knowing Alpates gave her life to protect the mirror, vows to take good care of it.

Final Chapter[]

While accompanying the party to Flamechurch restore the Sacred Flames, Throné and Temenos encounter Mindt. Faced with the prospect that Mindt is not who she claimed to be, Temenos attempts to interrogate her. She reveals her true identity and confronts the party.

Relationships[]

  • Pontiff Jörg: Temenos views him as a true friend, possibly the only one who had faith in him. He gives Temenos the rank of inquisitor, allowing him the authority he needs to seek out the truth.
  • Crick: The Watson to Temenos's Holmes. Crick is a newly minted Sacred guard, him and Temenos share a philosophical friendship, both wanting to find the truth both behind the pontiffs murder, and their own faiths.
  • Mindt: A sister of the order of the sacred flame based in Flamechurch, she works at the Monastery where Temenos spreads the stories of the sacred flame to young children. They converse quite often, discussing the order.
  • Throné Anguis: Together as travellers, Temenos appreciates her cynicism and curiosity. He notes that should she have followed his faith he would have been forced to judge her, as it stands, he affectionately refers to her as his "Assistant".

Latent Power[]

Latent Power is an exclusive unique move for each character in Octopath Traveler II that can only be unlocked by defeating a tough opponent at the end of Chapter 1. It has a gauge that charges when they take damage, or break enemies.

Judgement: Breaks foe's Shield Points easily with any attack regardless of their weaknesses. Also bypass any Locked weaknesses.

Subjobs[]

Below are the sprites and appearance changes for Temenos with each basic Subjob:

Each time a subjob is selected the appearance of the character will also change. The first sprite is the appearance with no Subjob equipped.

Recommended Subjobs[]

  • Scholar works very well with Temenos' base kit. His Latent Power, Judgment, combined with a fully boosted Elemental Barrage allows him to break as many as eight Shield Points at once. Otherwise, he can use Advanced Magic and Alephan's Wisdom to make his party-wide spells hit two more times, allowing him to break three shields on all enemies; both tactics he can spam using the following Support Skills: Merchant's Full Power to recharge his Latent Power at the start of combat alongside Apothecary's Vigorous Victor and Inspiriting Break to regain SP at the end of combat and when breaking enemies. This subjob also gives Temenos access to four elements, Fire, Ice, Lightning, and Light, though the only weapons he can use are staves.
  • Armsmaster and its Sixfold Strike can also be used to win Coerce attempts with ease. However, this combination is less viable in full-party combat unless you plan to use Sealticge's Seduction which makes Sixfold Strike an AOE that breaks 6 Shield Points without boosting and can be used on the first turn.
  • Apothecary can turn Temenos into a healing menace by giving him both single-target and party-wide heals. This allowing him to be parsimonious with his SP and gives him additional combat prowess due to the subjob's higher Physical Attack and the flexibility of Axes. It also grants Temenos the ability to heal status effects, filling in the gap in his healing abilities.
  • Thief is a good all-around choice. Fighting is NOT what Temenos does, but the Speed boost is a valuable supplement to the natively slow Cleric class. Also, by using Cleric's Mystical Staff to regain SP and Thief's HP Thief to regain HP, he becomes fully self-sufficient.
  • Inventor's first Support Skill, A Step Ahead, works well on any character, since it allows them to automatically go first at the start of combat. However, this subjob has nothing else to offer Temenos and it is thus be best to move on once the skill has been acquired.
  • Conjuror turns Temenos into a pure support character. He can use the Conjure abilities to improve his allies' damage and breaking capabilities and can use Prayer for Rain to recover his companions' SP in addition to their HP. Temenos's own high Elemental Attack also benefits his own Conjuration effects when his support is not needed.

Due to the flexibilty of subjobs, any character can fill any role with the right equipment and skills, with proper planning, any of the travelers can perform decently on any subjob.

Etymology[]

Temenos is a term derived from the Greek word τέμνω ('temnō') meaning 'I cut'. It is used to describe a piece of land 'cut off' and designated as a special area, usually dedicated to a god. In English religious discourse, it refers to a holy territory.

Mistral is an Occitan word meaning 'masterly'. In France it refers to a strong, cold north wind, specifically one that blows from France into the Gulf of Lion.

Trivia[]

  • Temenos takes after Cyrus from the original Octopath Traveler, as both protagonists play a detective role and solve individual mysteries during their storylines.
  • Like Cyrus, Temenos's end goal (as designated by his Battle Extend music) is "Truth."
  • Temenos shares a few traits with his Orsterran cleric counterpart Ophilia, as they are both orphaned and taken in by a pontiff in the Order of the Sacred Flame; have knowledge of their lands' respective evil gods, Vide and Galdera; interact regularly with children; and fight wolf bosses, Felvarg and Hróðvitnir respectively, during their stories.
  • Alongside Throné, Temenos is one of only two travelers in Octopath Traveler II whose bosses all die during his story. He kills Felvarg, Cubaryi, and Kaldena, while Vados is killed off-screen by Kaldena after his battle with Temenos and subsequent arrest.
  • According to Ochette, Temenos has "big, adorable eyes."
  • Temenos is described as a 30 year old with a baby face in the 2023 artbook.[2]
  • In a postcard sent by Team Asano to Japanese fans Temenos is stated to be 178 cm (5'10") in height while Crick is 182 cm (6'0") and 22 years old.[3]
  • When he first became an Inquisitor, scriveners sought Temenos out in search of juicy gossip, eliciting his disgust.
  • According to Osvald, Temenos has "an elegant way of eating," as he leaves no scraps behind.
  • Writer Kakunoshin Futsuzawa mentions that at the time of writing the stories of Octopath Traveler II, he was into looking up unsolved crimes in Japan, which inspired him to make Temenos's story a detective/mystery story.[4]
  • According to writer Kakunoshin Futsuzawa, Temenos's story was the most difficult story to write.[4]
  • Temenos claims that physical labor has never really agreed with him.
  • When asked by Osvald to theorize, Temenos suggests that the seventh source is sheep. The more sheep the more one counts, he reasons, the more rest one can obtain, theoretically achieving infinite power.
  • Most of Temenos's voice lines in his first Crossed Path episode are noticeably muted, as are some of his lines in his second Crossed Path episode.
  • When composing Temenos's theme, Yasunori Nishiki sought to represent the cleric's elusive, aloof nature; the air of mystery around him; and his story's mystery mechanics. The harpsichord and tremolo on the marimba create an aloof, detached feel, while the extensive use of modulation adds mystery to the progression, expressing Temenos’s elusiveness.[5]
  • Temenos's mystery-solving mechanics are Nishiki's favorite aspect of Octopath Traveler II.[6]
  • Nishiki composed the theme "Doubt Is What I Do" as a classic mystery piece that also alludes to Temenos's theme. He incorporated the sound of a ticking clock and wrote a constantly spinning melody loop to convey the idea of the wheels turning in Temenos’s mind.[7]
  • When composing Temenos's unique final battle theme, "The Journey for Truth Ends," Yasunori Nishiki sought to express the highly appealing duality of Temenos's character. Although his theme is focused on his aloof, elusive ways, at his core he holds fast to his own truth. Because Temenos's character motifs have a highly cynical feel to begin with, Nishiki thinks that the arrangement as battle music makes them wonderfully caustic and Temenos-ish.[8]
