- "I am Empress Tatloch of G'roha! I am the rightful ruler of the continent!" —Tatloch
Tatloch is a character in Octopath Traveler 0 and Champions of the Continent. She is the ruler of the G'roha and the main antagonist of the Bestower of Power storyline. She was the one who sent Gonska to spread chaos in Orsterra and weakening their forces so they would be powerless before her invasion, making her the mastermind of the events leading to the Master of All storyline.
Profile[]
Appearence[]
Tatloch is a very beautiful woman with long silver hair and dressed in black, very revealing clothes.
Personality[]
Similar to Pardis III, Tatloch is obsessed with power and ruling over everything, believing that power is the most beautiful thing in the world. However, she shows that by behaving in a very dominant and sadistic way towards her subordinates, especially her male soldiers, referring to herself as "the mistress" and treating them as disposable pets.
After her humiliating defeat at the hands of Orsterra, Tatloch is imprisoned, where she remarks that she has become incredibly bored with her life. While she bears no regret over her past sins and is every bit the same self-centered empress as before, she came to respect the continent of Orsterra for its power, acknowledging their defeat of her and agreeing to help them out of both respect for their victory and to stave off her boredom. She also forms something of an uneasy kinship with Bargello, much to his chagrin.
Story[]
Tatloch was the ruler of the western country of G'roha, with the Ring of the Scholarking and the Lady of Grace in her possession. Using the last one, she managed to conquer the whole continent around G'roha.
Wanting to get hold of the other Divine Rings hidden in Orsterra, she manipulated King Pardis III of Edoras into gathering them for her by giving him the Ring of the Scholarking. She also sent Gonska to act as Pardis' trusted advisor so that he could make sure the king unkowingly followed the empress' plan. However, both Gonska and Pardis ended up killed by the Chosen One and their allies, who then sealed Pardis' rings in an unknown location. Tatltoch then decided to mobilize her fleet and lead a full-scale invasion against Orsterra to get the rings herself.
Bestower of Power[]
Upon her arrival, she defeated the allied kingdoms led by Edoras and sent her right-hand woman Pelagia to discover the location of Pardis' rings, as well as the Chosen One who wore the Ring of the Flamebringer. Upon finding out the rings were hidden in the Isle of Orsa, she led her fleet there, defeating the Altinia and Riven armies on the way.
When she got close to the island, the priestesses protecting the rings summoned a magic barrier to stop her from setting foot on it. That gave enough time for the allied kingdoms of Orsterra to attack them with their own fleet of battleships. During the battle, the remains of the Riven army managed to sneak into Tatloch's flagship and detonate its magazine, causing it to start sinking while opening a large whole for the Chosen One and their allies to get inside and confront Tatloch, defeating her once and for all. However, while the empress asked them to kill her, Queen Alaune of Edoras refused and instead had her arrested, to her dismay, as she found imprisonment to be humiliating for her.

Etymology[]
"Tatloch" is a variant of the English surname "Tatlock" (also spelled "Tatlocke"), which may be a habitational name. Alternatively, the name may combine the Old English "Taetel" (generally taken to refer to someone with controlling power) with the term "ac" (the root of the word "oak"). On this view, Tatloch's name represents her domineering power, while borrowing the oak's symbolism of strength, endurance, and wisdom. The alternate spelling of her name ("loch") refers to the Scottish term for a lake, which symbolizes Tatloch's naval power; it also alludes to the famous Loch Ness Monster, paralleling her ultimate monstrous, aquatic form.
Trivia[]
- Of the eight main antagonists, Tatloch is the only one who survives past her story chapter.
- The writers pointed out the ringbearers dying after the battle was too formulistic, so a consensus was reached and some scenes in Chapter III were remade so Tatloch wouldn't suffer the same fate as the others.[1]
- Hirohito Suzuki remarks that "This is also a rough draft by Futsuzawa. It took some trial and error to get the pixelated version of a character who shows a lot of skin, but the production went smoothly because we had a clear image of the character design and the clothes".[2]
- Her divine ring's form was conceived under the concepts of seductive beauty and dominance of the seas.[2]
