- "Facts are malleable things, you see. The powerful can bend 'em to their will. Provided they have enough coin, that is." —Stenvar
Captain Stenvar is a character in Octopath Traveler II. He serves as the Chapter 3 boss for Osvald.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Stenvar wears his blond hair in a ponytail and has a red cape. He wields a large polearm in battle.
Personality[]
Stenvar is a venal man, living first and foremost for money. He demonstrates an utter lack of scruples in his willingness to accept bribes to distort justice, claiming that facts can be bent to suit the will of the wealthy, while investing his confidence in money as the only unchanging store of value. When Osvald sets fire to his hoard, Stenvar collapses beside it in horror.
Prior to Story[]
Not much is known about Stenvar's early life, though at some point he joined the security forces at Conning Creek.
Five years prior, he met with and was bribed by Harvey, a renowned scholar from Montwise and a member of the Moonshade Order, to have Osvald arrested and set up for the murder of his wife and daughter. Shortly after Osvald was sent to prison, Stenvar rose up the ranks and eventually became the captain of the guard. He had most of the original guards changed out in favor of ruffians from the eastern continent.
Some time after the incident, he was confronted by Ethan, one of his men and the husband of Lady Clarissa, about the meeting he had with Harvey, but to hide his dealings, Stenvar had him murdered, making it look like a suicide.
Story[]
(I don't think this is where I should be going at the moment...) The following section contains potential story spoilers! |
One day, while in his office, Stenvar was confronted by Osvald, who was thought to have died in an escape attempt from Frigit Isle. After admitting his aiding and abetting Harvey, he summoned guards to his office and engaged Osvald in battle, only to be defeated by the vengeful scholar. Begging for his life, he told Osvald that despite not knowing where Harvey himself was, his stolen research was sent to Montwise on Harvey's orders. He then witnessed Osvald setting his money on fire and destroying it, much to his horror.
Captain Stenvar will begin battle with 2 Stenvar's Footman at his side. He can summon two additional Stenvar's Footman one time during the battle once the initial two are defeated.
Prior to any action taken at the start of battle, Stenvar will seal and lock all his weaknesses as a free action.
Defeating one Stenvar's Footman will unlock his weakness to polearms and lightning. Defeating the other unlocks the rest of the weaknesses.

Etymology[]
"Stenvar" may be derived from the Scandinavian name "Sten," meaning "stone." In Norse mythology, Vár or Vór (meaning "pledge" or "beloved") is a goddess associated with oaths and agreements, so Stenvar's name may combine the elements of "stone" and "pledge," ironically implying that he holds steady to his oaths of office (when in reality he is willing to sell his loyalty for a price).
Trivia[]
- It is unknown what happened to Stenvar after Osvald defeats him in Conning Creek, as he disappears after Osvald's third chapter is completed.
