- "Doing good. Island riddle. You solving. Very good." —To Temenos
Shirlutto is a minor character in Octopath Traveler II, appearing briefly during Temenos's Chapter 4. He is a Beastling who dwells in the Nameless Village, where he serves as a guide through the Wandering Wood.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Like most male beastlings, Shirlutto goes bare-chested and wears dark leggings. He has long white hair that he wears in a ponytail.
Personality[]
Like most Beastlings, Shirlutto only speaks in fragments and expresses his feelings openly. He only leaves the village to guide others through the Wandering Wood's trial, during which he is supportive and encouraging, congratulating Temenos frequently on his progress through the woods. Despite his deep interest in humans and the world beyond his own, he has never left his village of his own accord on account of his sheer laziness. Even so, he is eager to engage in conversation about Beastlings and humans in an effort to better understand the human world.
Story[]
During his Chapter 4, Temenos attempts to follow Kaldena through the Wandering Wood. After a few loops through the mazelike forest, however, he decides that he must heed her note to "listen to the voices of your forebears," and returns to the Nameless Village in search of a Beastling guide.
Temenos finds Shirlutto on the eastern side of the village, where Shirlutto welcomes him to undertake "the trial." As soon as Shirlutto joins his company, the path through the Wandering Woods straightens so that Temenos can proceed to the Rifted Rock beyond.
Before parting ways with Temenos at the edge of the ruins, Shirlutto tells him of the Beastling race's creation by D'arqest's magic. Shirlutto also mentions that another has gone ahead of Temenos, referring to Kaldena and her Sacred Guard, but he does not see it as his duty to interfere.
Later, Shirlutto stands at the summit of the Nameless Village, contemplating the differences between humans and Beastlings. Interacting with him unlocks the sidequest Shirlutto's Next Chapter, during which he requests the party to bring him a number of items from the human world. He requires a lute, a paper play, and an account of human history, each of which grants him a deeper understanding of humankind. Introspective, Shirlutto finally reveals that humans killed his friend with an arrow, an act of meaningless anger that seems to lack any reasonable motivations. As he muses upon humans' violent tendencies, he realizes that he feels something he has never felt before: a desire for revenge, followed by sadness.
Shirlutto concludes that he must have become more human, though whether or not this is a good thing remains open to question.
