Scourge of the Sea is a boss in Octopath Traveler II. It is an optional boss is initially encountered in The Sundering Sea within the whirlpool in the strait that separates Toto'haha from the Brightlands.

After it is defeated, it may appear as a random encounter in the Sundering Sea at night, where it may be captured.

Battle[]

Scourge of the Sea begins the battle by using Starboard Straight, removing two travelers from the battle for two turns, as its first action.

After it recovers from its first break, the following effects occur:

  • Shields increase from 12 to 13
  • Actions per turn increases to 2
  • At the end of its actions each turn, Scourge of the Sea will begin using Shape-Shift, changing its weaknesses to a different set.

Abilities[]

  • Shape-Shift: Effect. Used as a free action at the end of Scourge of the Sea's second action after it recovers from its first break. Changes Scourge of the Sea's weaknesses to the next set in the following order (it will not return to its original weaknesses):
    • Type SwordsType AxesType StavesType FireType Light (Initial, does not repeat)
    • Type DaggersType BowsType LightningType Dark
    • Type PolearmsType AxesType BowsType FireType Ice
    • Type SwordsType FireType IceType Lightning
    • Type SwordsType PolearmsType DaggersType AxesType BowsType Staves
  • Attack: Physical attack. Single target. [Power 100]
  • Starboard Straight: Effect. Removes two random travelers from the battle for two turns. Status effect counters for removed travelers will not decrement while the traveler is removed from battle. If the remaining travelers are defeated, the battle will end in defeat.
  • Shipwreck: Physical attack. Targets entire party. Chance to inflict Status Terror Terror for 1-3 turns (50%). [Power 100]
  • Whirling Tide: Physical attack. Targets entire party. Chance to inflict Status Confusion Confusion for 1-3 turns (30%). [Power 100]
  • Dark Vortex: Physical attack. Targets entire party. Chance to inflict Status Blindness Blindness for 1-3 turns (35%). [Power 100]
  • Frigid Flurry: Elemental attack, Type Ice. Targets entire party. [Power 150]
  • Bad Dream: Physical attack. Targets entire party. Chance to inflict Status Sleep Sleep for 1-3 turns (30%). [Power 100]
  • Pressure: Debuff. Targets entire party. Applies the following debuffs for 3-4 turns:
  • The enemy attempts to swallow everything...: Scourge of the Sea enters boost mode for 1 turn. Uses Swallow Prey if Scourge of the Sea is not broken before its next action.
    • Swallow Prey: Effect. Removes 3 random party members from the battle for two turns. Status effect counters for removed travelers will not decrement while the traveler is removed from battle. If the remaining travelers are defeated, the battle will end in defeat.


Summon[]

Scourge of the Sea can be captured as summon monster after defeated it once and encounter it again in random encounter on The Sundering Sea during nighttime. Scourge of the Sea only can be summoned once per battle and with max boost. It will use Left Straight, which deals 1x Type Staves Staff damage to one random enemies and break 6 shields regardless of their weaknesses.

  • Scourge of the Sea is a reference of Japanese folklore Umibōzu, as seen on its Japanese's name, how it only encounter at night after being defeated once, and its abilities involving taking party member and target entire party.
  • The Scourge of the Sea is one of the two bosses introduced battled on the Sundering Sea, alongside the Battle-Worn Shark.
