- "Welcome to Riverford, the most westerly town in the Riverlands!" —Guard
Riverford is a location in Octopath Traveler, where Olberic's final chapter takes place. The city can also be seen during several flashbacks in Therion's story.
Description[]
Set alongside the river, enclosed by a drawbridge and fortress-like walls, Riverford exudes a foggy autumn aura furthered by its dead, leafless trees. The city teems with townspeople, including a large residential district, but it retains a grim, closed-in air, not unlike that of a pioneering town struggling to survive in hostile territory. Werner has terrorized the city beneath his ruthless military regime, posting corrupt guardsmen at the gates and erecting a pyre in the center of the city. As a result, the townspeople are hostile and paranoid, living in constant fear of his oppression. When Werner has been overthrown, the people replace the pyre with white flowers to symbolize hope for the future.
Story[]
(I don't think this is where I should be going at the moment...) The following section contains potential story spoilers! |
Before the events of Octopath Traveler[]
During the last 27 years from 1618 (1591-1618), the town has endured a flooded river, a ravaging fire and an overthrow of the local lord and father to Harald by Werner. While the iron fist rule of the new lord was initially welcomed, the brutal regime would soon instill fear in the populace who rightly believes that the slightest of offense is now punishable with execution without a trial. Furthermore, the previously booming economy has now slowed down.
The rule of Werner, as relayed by Harald[]
“Werner accused the former lord of Riverford, Harald’s father, of larceny and pillage, and won the support of the common folk. Even the burgher’s were persuaded to make common cause, and soon enough he had them proclaim him the new lord. But once he took power… that’s when the terror began.
Death by fire for criminals, with executions held once per month. The populace initially hailed the new regime. Many were happy to see villains and blackguards get their comeuppance. But it didn’t end there. How many murderers can one town harbor, after all? Pickpockets and swindlers were next. Then a dishonest merchant. Any peccadillo became a capital offense. In time, mere accusation was enough to land a man on the pyre. Even the clearest calumny.
And yet… By this time, no one dared raise their voice in opposition. Some had, early on. But when they appeared tied to the stakes at the next burning, the rest understood that in silence lay their only hope for survival.[1]”
The events of Olberic, Chapter 4[]
The rebel resistance had grown considerably by 1618 - leading to the uprising. The plan of the rebellion consisted of a diversionary attack in the square to draw the attention of as many of Werner’s men as possible. Then, their best swordsmen infiltrate the lord’s mansion by way of a secret passage known to Harald. It was a hard-won victory, but a victory nonetheless. The rebels took heavy losses, but with aid from Olberic and Erhardt, succeeded in ousting Werner from his seat of power in his predecessor’s manse. The reign of Lord Harald begins with working together with the populace to put Riverford on the right track. The lord is selling off his own property to fund the restoration.

Trivia[]
- The price to restore reputation in Riverford is 30,000 leaves.
- Prior to Werner's takeover, Riverford faced numerous hardships in the past. According to the biography of one townsperson, the city has endured catastrophes such as flooding rivers and ravaging fires, rebuilding diligently each time.
- The biography of one of the town's merchants reveals that "in the past, the town's economy was booming," but Werner's reign of terror has caused an economic recession in the present day.
- Therion and Darius used to steal from the people as Riverford, as demonstrated by Therion's story flashbacks. At the time, the city was home to a rival thief gang called the Ciannos, who had set their sights on a precious gemstone and were known to resort to violence if need be. Therion and Darius fled out of the Lord's Manse with the gem in their own possession, implying that they robbed the town's lord.
- The Passionate Youth mentions the Landars, a highborn family that used to dwell in Riverford. According to him, the Landars were famous for hoarding treasure, but the house's last lord was denounced for corruption and slain by an arrow when he tried to flee, plunging his family into ruin.
