Personality[]

Story[]

Prior to the events of the game, Rinyuu was born to the Crossford family and somehow found herself in Emberglow where she met and grew a close bond with Velnorte. Learning of her blindness, Velnorte sought to develop a cure for it albeit creating a destructive substance instead. Rinyuu was rendered unconscious and used as a bargaining chip by Tytos to coerce Velnorte into continuing the develop the Scarlet Elixir.

Master of Power[]

Following their agreement, Rinyuu begins living with Velnorte in Emberglow, unaware of his circumstances. They live their lives in bliss until one fateful day when Rinyuu comes back from volunteering. As she is accosted by a strange man-like creature, the Chosen One sees her in distress and dispatches the threat. Rinyuu thanks the Chosen One for their help and invites them to her home, cooking them a hot meal in gratitude. Velnorte asks the traveler many questions, inviting the Chosen One to stay the night. After everyone has slept, Velnorte leaves for the night, worrying Rinyuu. She asks the Chosen One to follow him as he's been going out more frequently, expressing her thanks once again.

After discovering the truth behind Velnorte's experiments, the Chosen One approaches Rinyuu and has the option of whether or not to tell her about the events that transpired. Telling her what's happened in the laboratory will prompt a sad response from Rinyuu as she goes on to mention the elixir that has killed countless. (Choosing not to tell Rinyuu has her tell the Chosen One to be honest, which makes the Chosen One tell the truth regardless of the player's choice). She gives the Chosen One a token of her gratitude and pays for their stay at the inn.

When Velnorte arrives back, Rinyuu confronts him and tells him that she's decided to marry a suitor and that she will be leaving him. When the two fall asleep, she leaves at night and thanks him for everything. In actuality, Rinyuu sold herself to Tytos and works under his regime.

When Velnorte decides to stop assisting Tytos with the elixir, Tytos sends for Jurgen to eliminate Rinyuu. Rinyuu is chased to the mountains and stands near a cliff, cornered by Jurgen and the Scarlet Wing soldiers. The Chosen One and Velnorte race to the mountaintop to save Rinyuu, only for Rinyuu to fall off a cliff. Velnorte falls into utter despair, deciding to continue his work with the elixir. When the Chosen One arrives to check in on Velnorte, they notice Velnorte's positivity and delusion as he motions to a make-shift puppet of Rinyuu about dinner.

After leaving Velnorte, the Chosen One is approached by a Hunter who says that he needs help obtaining a liver with medicinal properties. The hunter brings the Chosen One to his house where the Chosen One sees Rinyuu, alive yet in dire straits. The Chosen One agrees to help the Hunter, assisting him in getting the liver and the hunter feeds the liver to Rinyuu. After consuming the liver, Rinyuu is healed, although she has no memory of her past. Meanwhile, an unimpressed Tytos berates Jurgen, mentioning he couldn't even bring Rinyuu's head. As a result of Jurgen's inaction, Tytos brings Jurgen's mother into the room and slits her throat.

A crazed Jurgen approaches the hunter's abode, attempting to kill Rinyuu once more. The Chosen One intervenes and Jurgen runs away, however upon hearing Velnorte's name, Rinyuu's memories come back and she asks the Chosen One and the hunter to accompany her to Velnorte's home. Upon arriving, the trio find a goodbye letter from Velnorte, prompting to find him before the worst can happen.

After navigating the ongoing massacre in the ceremonial square, the group encounters Velnorte at the entrance of the Cathedral. Rinyuu and Velnorte are reunited and proclaim their love although Velnorte has unfinished business with Tytos. They are given the serum for the elixir that Velnorte created and confront Tytos. Velnorte perishes from his battle with Tytos, much to Rinyuu's dismay. To atone for Velnorte's crimes, Rinyuu devotes herself to service as a cleric, having regained her eyesight from the red snow containing Velnorte's elixir. She leaves Emberglow with Phina and they make their way to the Flamesgrace Cathedral.

Trivia[]

  • Rinyuu hails from a foreign land, so the sprite designers took care to ensure that she would fit in with the characters around her. [1]
  • Hirohito Suzuki comments on the Master of Power's Fin art, "Rinyuu has regained her eyesight. She looks to the future, forging ahead with the painful memories that remain in her heart."[2]
  • Velnorte states her and his name are related to bells.[3] It's likely he is making a pun about the "Ring a Bell" phrase.
  • Writer Futsuzawa Kanoshin notes that he had many discussions with producer Suzuki Hiroto about whether or not to give Rinyuu sight. He thinks that Rinyuu's being blind has fostered a kindness that allows her to empathize with the feelings of others, and this wouldn't change even if she could see again. Suzuki believes that Rinyuu's regaining her sight was a miracle that Velnorte brought about in her life, which had previously been so hopeless. It was something that the story creators personally focused on, as they felt that there should be some salvation of this magnitude.[4]
