Reputation is a recurring game mechanic in the series.
Gameplay[]
In Octopath Traveler, reputation is a background stat that affects which Path Action can be performed on the town's inhabitants. Each town tracks reputation separately and upon entering a town for the first time, you have a neutral reputation.
Decreasing Reputation[]
Reputation is decreased when you fail a rogue Path Action. The following path actions are considered rogue:
If you fail rogue Path Actions five times, you will be unable to perform any Path Actions with the townspeople in that town until you restore your reputation.

Cyrus: For whatever reason, it would seem the people here care not to converse with me further.
Tressa: Seems the people here don't like me much. I'll have to do something about that!
Olberic: Alas, it would seem I've alienated myself to the local populace.
Primrose: It would seem the people here aren't enamored of me.
Alfyn: Shucks, seems that people here'd rather not talk to me.
Therion: ...Seems I'm not welcome here. I'd best make a discreet retreat.
H'aanit: It seemest these people care not for my company.
Restoring Reputation[]
Reputation can be restored in one of two ways:
- When speaking with a new traveler for the first time, your reputation in the town will be restored.
- Visit a tavern and pay the barkeeper a set fee to restore your reputation by spreading good rumors about you.
