- "Who am I? A selfish king with a bottomless appetite for wealth? Or a deceitfully bold king who craves power and fame? ...No. I am the king who shall rule over all. Only I and I alone am fit to rule... To sit upon the throne of Orsterra..." —King Pardis III
Osasuna, who later would become King Pardis III, is a character in Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. He is the main antagonist of the Master of All storyline, which follows the Wealth, Power and Fame storyline.
Profile[]
Appearence[]
Pardis III is a corpulent elderly man with a large white beard. He wears a black robe covered by a long red cape and a dark crown on his head.
Personality[]
Prince Osasuna has always been an ambitious and self centered man who truly believed he was the only one worthy of becoming the ruler of the continent of Orsterra. Even so, it seems that he deeply appreciated his father, trying to impress him every chance he could, while deeply hating his brother Oswald for being Pardis II's favorite.[1]
As Pardis III, he rules his kingdom with an iron fist and sees all of his subjects as mere pawns that live only to do his biding. He's even been capable of beheading those who look at him in the eye instead of bowing down (an attitude that made one of Edoras' former soldiers despise him deeply) and has no qualms in taking out his own officers and even family to ensure that no one questions his rule.
Story[]
(I don't think this is where I should be going at the moment...) The following section contains potential story spoilers! |
The second son of King Pardis II of Edoras, who at that time was at conflict with the western tribes. He disagreed with his father's beliefs about the importance of the people above the king, which were also shared by his big brother Oswald. Because of that, Pardis II greatly favored Oswald as his successor to the throne and, in his death bed, asked him to keep Osasuna away from having any influence over the kingdom, as he saw evil hidden in his heart. However, right after Pardis II's passing, Osasuna hired an apothecary to concoct a poison to kill Oswald, and after achieve said goal, disposed of said apothecary to ensure his silence,[2] and became the new king of Edoras, Pardis III.
At some point of his life, he acquired the Ring of the Scholarking from Tatloch, presumably through Gonska.
The following years, Pardis would wage war against both the western tribes and the Kingdom of Riven. That war against Riven cost both kingdoms thousands of lives, until King Solon of Altinia managed to convince them to sign a non aggression pact between the three kingdoms. While this would stop the conflict between Edoras and Riven, Pardis still led his army against the western tribes. During that conflict, Pardis would recruit officers to aid him such as the popular general Mahrez, commander Krauser and the enigmatic magician Gonska, who would act as his main adviser and enforcer in the shadows.
At some point during his campaign to expand Edoras' influence, he arranged his marriage with Ulrica, one of the daughters of the lord of Grandport, in exchange for allowing the city to keep its sovereignty. He had two daughters with his wife, Elrica and Alaune. Pardis refused to have a woman as his successor, so he decided to execute his daughters and conceive another child with his wife. However, Ulrica refused to go along with her husband's plan and committed suicide in front of him in exchange for the life of her daughters. Impressed by her determination, Pardis agreed to spare his daughters.
Years later, following Herminia, Tytos, and Auguste's deaths at the hands of the Chosen One, Pardis used Gonska to acquire their Divine Rings that granted wealth, power and fame, and combined their power with his own Divine Ring. Once he was to acquire the fifth ring from the Chosen One, he would be able to become the undisputed ruler of Orsterra.
Pardis supervised general Mahrez's victories against the western tribes. His triumphs made the king allow him to marry princess Elrica and become his successor to the throne. However, he would also see how much the people loved the general and how excited they were for him to become king. Meanwhile, he had the magician Gonska supplant Riven's Prime Minister and manipulate the king to start conquering Orsterra, which caught the attention of Elrica. The princess tried to convince Pardis to wait a few days before invading the western tribes, just in case Riven wanted to attack Edoras while its army was away. Pardis didn't like her advise and got close to execute Lebrandt for her insolence, but ended up sparing him after after Elrica begged so.
The day of the final battle against the western tribes, Pardis wanted to go to the battlefield and see them fall with his own eyes. General Mahrez put the recently recruited Chosen One in charge of Pardis' protection in order to facilitate them an audience with the king. The Chosen One managed to defeat the enemies who tried to attack Pardis while Mahrez killed the enemy general, ending the war with victory for Edoras. After the war, Pardis took Mahrez to a hidden point of the canyon to congratulate him, only to stab him to death afterwards, claiming that Mahrez's popularity among the people had become a nuisance to him. The Chosen One witnessed the murder, but Pardis quickly incriminated them and had them imprisoned. The next day, he would be informed of their escape, but gave little importance to it.
Having dealt with the western tribes and Mahrez, Pardis put his plan to take over Riven and Altinia into motion. The day of the meeting between him and the kings of Riven and Altinia, he had Gonska convince King Riven (in his Prime Minister disguise) to invade Altinia with half of his army while sending the messenger Cerro to the meeting with Altinian King Solon to dispose of him. With the abscense of half of the Riven army, Pardis easily invaded the Riven capital and killed the king, but Cerro failed his mission after being defeated by the Chosen One and their new allies, the Riven swordsman "Charles" and the Edoras swordsman "El".
After conquering Riven, Pardis led his army and his strongest soldiers to invade Altinia, observing the battle from affar. While his forces clashed with Altinia's, he was ambushed by the Chosen One and El, but managed to quickly knock out the Chosen One before clashing with "El", who revealed herself to be princess Elrica, knowing the truth about Mahrez's death and wanting to dethrone Pardis to end the war. However, the princess was no match against the God of War, whose Divine Ring made him invulnerable against any attack. After defeating his daughter, Pardis' army managed to obliterate the Altinia army and force King Solon to retreat.
After that, Pardis had the princess charged for high treason and ordered her to be executed. However, he found a new obstacle to his plans: Princess Alaune had reported his attack to both Riven and Altinia, thus breaking the non aggression pact signed under the Church of the Sacred Flame's supervision. Because of that, Pardis could be put on trial by the Pope and the other kings of Orsterra, with Solon as the accuser. Despite that, Pardis managed to be declared innocent by using technicalities and having Gonska, disguised as King Riven, declare in his favor. Right after returning to Edoras, Pardis led Elrica's execution and forced the Chosen One to helplessly watch, in order to sink their heart into despair until he could be able to get the fifth Divine Ring from them.
Pardis and Gonka's plot would be discovered soon after that by "Charles", who revealed himself as the estranged son of King Riven. With the help of the Chosen One and Alaune, Gonska was unmasked and defeated and Charles became the new king of Riven. Then, by combining the strength of Alaune, the Chosen One, Riven and Altinia, they managed to invade Edoras and attack Pardis' castle, where the Master of All, despite using the full power of his four Divine Rings, ended up being killed as a lonely monarch.
Quote[]
- "Brother, you truly a good man. As skilled with the pen as the sword. Beloved by the people. I cannot hold a candle to you. It is no wonder that those who admire you regard me with contempt. ...There is but one quality you lack. Your sole failing and my singular grace. Ambition. I know who I am. Who I have always been..." —To Oswald after delivering him the wine
- "The land? The people? I am the land. I am the people! My rule is absolute! All are but pawns to serve my end. True happiness comes only from submitting to your king! Do you understand, you worthless pawn!?" —King Pardis III answering to "El" pleads to stop the war
- ""Walk the path of righteousness... No matter what may thwart you. You shall face my fiery wrath... And know your true master." This is what lies at the end of the path you've chosen!" —King Pardis III before carrying certain execution
- "I am... I am Orsterra's one true king... This realm... All of it... All is mine!" —As the Master of All

Etymology[]
Osasuna means "health", "strength" or "vigour" in the Basque language. As King Pardis III, he managed to live a long live, and despite his old age, he still had the strength and vigour to fight enemies by himself.
Trivia[]
- Artist UCMM remarks, "I wanted King Pardis III to have an overwhelming presence, one not reliant on muscle or strength visible to the naked eye. I ended up drawing him rising up, like an imposing wall. His physique is already disproportionate to his head, but it's even more so in this illustration. What kind of body does he have under there, anyway... [3]
- The ostensible regality of Pardis's beard is offset by a repulsive feeling, like roots are growing out from somewhere.[4]
- Pardis's desire to control the continent transforms the Master of All into a massive tree taken root. His final form possesses four Divine Rings, so elements of those bosses have been incorporated into his design.[5]
- For King Pardis III's beard, sprite designer Shizuka Morimoto aimed for the most voluminous facial hair on the continent.[6]
- Pardis III is the only playable scholar so far who doesn't have tome skills. Even if he must be equipped with tomes, all his physical attacks deal sword damage.
- He is also the only scholar who lacks elemental skills. To compensate, his sword skills also exploit fire, lightning and darkness weaknesses.
