Prior to Story[]
(I don't think this is where I should be going at the moment...) The following section contains potential story spoilers! |
Forty-eight years prior to the events of the game, when Papp was eight, he ran away from his father, who was an abusive alcoholic. When he was sixteen, Papp established his own shop, which burned down when he was twenty-four. When he was thirty-two, Papp had Partitio; his wife passed away when he was forty. At some point before Partitio's birth but after his shop burned down, Papp met Roque Brilliante, whom he opened a shop with.
Sixteen years prior to current events, Papp and his son Partitio oversaw the land that would become Orerush, their new home and town. As they were discussing how the land would be run, Papp's friend and business partner Roque interrupted them, while he complimented the young man's idea, he stated that as the land itself was an asset purchased, and as such, it could not be given away for free, which discouraged Partitio. Papp then explained to him the reason for buying the land: there was talk of a silver deposit in the hills themselves. He then issued a challenge for his son to test his business acumen: find someone who has some silver ore and buy it for them using some leaves he had given him, which he succeeded in doing, earning compliments from both men.
Eight years later, Orerush had become very prosperous with silver being its commodity. One day, Papp and Partitio had a meeting after the latter returned from selling silver ore to visiting merchants. They were then interrupted by one of the mine workers, who alerted them that a known local gang was causing trouble at the mine again. Despite Papp strictly warning his son to not do anything rash, the young man took off to confront the gang, to Papp's dismay. Later that night, he was confronted by Roque, who announced that he was leaving town as he felt the town's fortunes were "ebbing away". Despite Papp's attempts to change his mind, he left the house, but not before giving him a warning about the contract he signed, saying it has one "crucial flaw", which he will find out about soon enough.
Soon after Roque's departure, the former land owner took back the land due to a loophole in the signed contract and levied a huge tax on silver, causing most of the residents to live in poverty, with some being jobless and the town and homes falling into disrepair over the years. Papp himself was forced to sell his possessions and work back in the mines for a time to make ends meet, but ended up in poor health due to overwork.
Story[]
While eating a meal with Partitio one day and lamenting the contract he signed and its effects, Papp's health began to worsen, which prompted Partitio to get medicine for him. On his son's return, Papp noticed how dispirited he looked, due to him running into Giff earlier, who now worked as the land owner's enforcer and collector. After asking him if he should just go for it and do what he wanted with his life, Partitio immediately left again, with the intent to confront Giff and his men.
After Giff was ousted from power by Partitio and his posse, Papp forced Giff to work in the town store to pay off the debts he owed due to his actions. Later, he met with his son and the workers, who encouraged him to go on a journey to see the world with the mission to combat poverty.
Papp later met Partitio outside his home while the latter was gathering merchandise to sell at a newly-made department store in Wellgrove. To help him, Papp sold him some high-quality silver.
Papp would later work with a reformed Roque to help with measurements for the tracks for the use of the locomotive, Partitio's newest idea to help change the world.
