- "You there! Yes, you! I saw the whole thing! 'Mysterious Man in Yellow Coat Chases Off Villainous Roque Company Collector!' What a scoop! I can see the headline now!" —When meeting Partitio
Ori is a character in Octopath Traveler II. She is an industrious scrivener who appears primarily in Partitio's storyline, although she also makes cameos elsewhere.
As she travels the world looking for the latest scoop, Partitio's actions catch her eye, and she seemingly appears out of thin air to get all the juicy details.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Ori is a short young woman wearing a brown cap with a white shirt, brown trousers with suspenders, a blue ascot, and brown boots.
Personality[]
Ori is a dedicated and curious scrivener always looking for her next big scoop. She has a habit of chasing whatever leads catch her fancy, and is always the first to report on whatever happenings arise around her. She has a particular interest in Partitio, for whom she voices vehement support.
In reality, Ori is one of the primary members of the Moonshade Order, a cult whose plan is to resurrect the dark god Vide to consume the world. Much like her adoptive brother Oboro, she grew to have a nihilistic viewpoint of the world due to her suffering under the invasions of Ku in her youth. She is revealed to have shadowed almost all of the travelers and report on their activities to the Order throughout the game, and was among those chosen to sacrifice themselves to douse each of Solistia's Sacred Flames and bring about Vide's return. However, thanks to Partitio's intervention and his sheer selflessness, Ori began to question whether or not Vide's return was what she truly wanted, and backed out of the ritual at the final moment, finally seeing hope for the future.
Story[]
(I don't think this is where I should be going at the moment...) The following section contains potential story spoilers! |
Ori's oldest memory is of a spray of blood, flashing crimson, as she cowered in the midst of a screaming crowd. Enemy soldiers cut down the fleeing innocents, some laughing as they did so.
Oboro, Ori's adopted older brother, saw a path through the chaos and helped her escape. The two suffered in a Ku-occupied territory as lowborn citizens, eventually losing hope for the future and seeking the end of the world. Like Oboro, Ori was eventually inducted into the Moonshade Order and infiltrated the Delsta Times to aid in the cult’s cause by gathering information for the group. During this time, she also monitored the activities of the main characters and kept records of her findings in her journal, including her observing Osvald's trial where he was sentenced to life imprisonment on Frigit Isle, as well as interviewing Castti after she saved Timberain from Trousseau's poison rain.
She took a special interest in Partitio due to his goals and motivations, and played a key role in him accomplishing his main goal by giving him information on Alrond; promoting the success of the newfound Wellgrove: Department Store; assisting him on getting inside Roque's factory; and providing a diversion for the factory guards so Partitio could continue through.
Ori eventually stumbled upon the Sacred Flame in the Fellsun Ruins, where she offered herself as a sacrifice to extinguish it. Despite the ritual's fatal intentions, she survived because Partitio's sheer selflessness had given her hope for the future, and was found by villagers from Crackridge. After the Sacred Flame is rekindled in Fellsun Ruins and the Journey for the Dawn is complete, Ori can be seen resting and recovering in Crackridge's inn.
She later appears in the New Delsta theater to watch Agnea's performance from the back of the theater near the exit.

Etymology[]
"Ori" is a Hebrew word (אורי) that means “my light." Ori's name reflects her ultimate return to hope, as she is the only member of the Moonshade Order who undergoes a change of heart and lives on to see the dawn.
Trivia[]
- In Chapter 5 of Ori's journal, she was noted to have been at Osvald's trial five years prior to the story. During the corresponding cutscene, she can be seen standing on the left side of the courtroom in the audience.
- Though Ori is seen in Crackridge's inn after the events at Fellsun Ruins during the game's final chapter, she cannot be interacted with in any way.
- The backstory of one Scrivener NPC in Timberain may reference Ori, as said scrivener is noted to be outperformed by a newly hired female reporter who keeps getting all of the best scoops.
- In travel banter with Partitio, Throné reveals that she has read some of Ori's articles in the New Delsta times. Throné calls Ori's work "finely written," describing it as "detailed and well-constructed" and infused with an "extraordinary energy."
- As revealed by her journal fragments, Ori hates Stormhail's cold, windy climate.
- Ori bears several similarities to Tressa, as both are vivacious young women who wear hats and play key roles in their respective games' Merchant stories (Ori being a support character, while Tressa is a protagonist). Some of Tressa's concept art even depicts her wearing her hair in a ponytail, looking nearly identical to Ori's final design.
