- "Seen better, seen worse, I reckon." —To Primrose
Oren is a character in Octopath Traveler. He works as a coachman for the Obsidians in Stillsnow.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Oren has brown hair and wears a dark winter coat along with a hat.
Personality[]
Oren is a gruff, taciturn man with a sharp eye and a suspicious nature. He appears indifferent to the charms of women, as demonstrated by his lack of interest in Primrose.
Story[]
Oren was hired as the Obsidians' coachman for his sharp eye and suspicious nature, working to transport brothel women from Stillsnow to the neighboring Obsidian Parlor.
When Primrose attempts to board his stagecoach alongside Arianna, he refuses, utterly unimpressed by her efforts to charm him. However, Primrose manages to board the stagecoach by asking for help from the tavern keeper, to whom Oren owes a debt. Sweating in the presence of his "kind benefactor," Oren agrees to take both Primrose and Arianna to the Obsidian Parlor. As he drops the women off, he tells Primrose that he remains suspicious of her.
Following Rufus's defeat at the hands of Primrose and the collapse of the Obsidians in Stillsnow, Oren struggles to find new work. In a side story, he finds honest work in Natalia's employ, where he works alongside Arianna.
Quotes[]
- "Can't you see I'm busy here? I've got work to do... at last." —In Stonegard Valleys, sidequest completed
- "What do you want...?" —When Guided/Allured
- "Must head back..." —Parting Ways
- "Why not...?" —When Challenged
- "Must protect my employer..." —When Provoked
Etymology[]
"Oren" is a Hebrew name (אורן) meaning "pine" or "ash." Pine trees are often associated with longevity, fortitude, and endurance, while ash trees symbolize healing and life. As such, Oren's name likely reflects his stubborn equanimity and the new life he finds in Natalia's employ.
Trivia[]
- After Primrose fails to charm Oren, she Allures a tavern keeper instead, making this the one of the only instances in the game in which the player can use Path Actions on a tavern keeper. (During his Chapter 3, Therion can also use Steal on Wellspring's tavernkeeper.)
