- "In this world, magic is derived from six elements. Fire, ice, lightning, wind, light, and darkness. However, there is one phenomenon that cannot be explained by the magic power of these elements. The pit of D'arqest. Four hundred years ago, the sage Gratton observed the pit, and his conclusion was thus: 'The answer is clear: only power beyond the six sources could open a pit of this size. There exists a seventh. I am sure of it.' Thus was born Gratton's Hypothesis, the cornerstone of our magical studies. It was he who suggested the existence of the One True Magic." —Harvey
One True Magic is one of Osvald's EX Skills in Octopath Traveler II. It is unlocked during the fight with Harvey during Chapter 5 of Osvald's story.
The "One True Magic" is a power said to be greater than that of the known elemental magics, studied by both Osvald and Harvey. Scholars have been searching for this "seventh source" for centuries.
Effect[]
Deals damage to all foes, and reduces their shield points by 1 each hit.
Similar to other spells learned by the Scholar, One True Magic becomes One True Magic II, hitting twice, with the Advanced Magic buff and becomes One True Magic III, hitting three times, with the Alephan's Wisdom buff.
History[]
About 800 years ago, the Archmage D'arqest created an immense rift known as the Pit of D'arqest. None of the six regular elements could be channeled to create such a pit, leading a scholar named Gratton to conclude 400 years later that D'arqest must have harnessed a seventh source - the One True Magic. This theory came to be known as "Gratton's Hypothesis" and inspired centuries of study amongst scholars searching for the One True Magic.
According to Osvald, because the six regular sources (fire, ice, thunder, wind, light, and darkess) are physical in nature, their power is limited. The seventh source must be immaterial in order to channel untold amounts of power. Osvald's studies led him to pursue the One True Magic in the form of mathematics, developing formulae to concentrate various elements in the hopes that he might discover the seventh source.
Harvey, a fellow seeker of the One True Magic, took a biological approach. He theorized that monster blood was the key to finding the One True Magic, since monsters can harness magic without using incantations. By forming purified crystals of monster blood, and mixing various species of monsters in order to combine their power, Harvey hoped to come across the One True Magic himself.
Combining Osvald's formulae with his monster studies, Harvey became known throughout academia as "Gratton's second coming." All scholars looked to him in eager anticipation of his discovery, though unbeknownst to the public, he was performing forbidden experiments by creating monstrous chimeras.
Ultimately, Harvey came to the conclusion that the One True Magic could be harnessed through human blood, combining the Lumina blood from Osvald's daughter Elena with the remains of the Archmage D'arqest. Through this combination, Harvey succeeded in harnessing the Shadow, which he believed to be the One True Magic and the seventh source.
At the same moment, however, Osvald harnessed the real One True Magic unintentionally. He desired only to protect his daughter, and his love for her enabled her to channel pure magic to counteract Harvey's. Although both scholars discovered powerful forms of magic, Harvey's "One True Magic" is dark in color and causes damage to its own conjurer, whereas Osvald's One True Magic is bright and harms only his enemies. Therefore, Osvald's magic is proven to be the ultimate One True Magic.

Trivia[]
- The Shadow version of the One True Magic used by Harvey is similar to how Dark Knights from the Final Fantasy series use their magic, as it drains a portion of the caster's health with every use.
- One of Ori's journal fragments theorizes that Elena herself possesses a form of the One True Magic, presumably due to her being a descendant of the Lumina Clan through her mother.
- Clarissa theorizes that the seventh source consists of human greed, which D'arqest channeled by stripping humans of their greed and turning them into Beastlings. Cohazeh, however, takes the opposite approach and suggests that the seventh source is the opposite of greed, which D'arquest summoned by removing the greed from the humans. Clarissa's theory represents the flawed, self-centered version of magic that stems from the Shadow, whereas Cohazeh's theory echoes the altruistic, protection-based One True Magic that Osvald summons.
