- "Objects deteriorate quickly and human lives are short. But with enough effort, knowledge can be passed on indefinitely. Sharing knowledge creates a better future for everyone." —Odette's philosophy
Odette is a character in Octopath Traveler. She is an old friend of Cyrus Albright and a scholar who formerly worked at the Royal Academy in Atlasdam.
Appearance[]
Story[]
Odette was taken in by Geoffrey Azelhart when she was a child, as she had no one else. Before he died, he asked her not to visit his grave, and to simply "do what [she] must while she is still alive."
10 years prior to the events of Octopath Traveler, Odette left the Royal Academy due to frustration with the internal bureaucracy. She conducts her research in Quarrycrest, where she would later aid Cyrus in his search for the tome From the Far Reaches of Hell.
Champions of the Continent[]
Prologue[]
Odette is renting an apartment in Sunshade for her nearby research. While she lives there, she takes on orphaned and/or impoverished pupils to teach reading and writing to so that they can get jobs in the future. The student the Ringbearer Chosen meets is a young boy named Ramzi, who has some impulsive tendencies that lead Odette to ask them for help finding him when he runs off with Odette's knife. The Ringbearer finds Ramzi when he threatens them with the knife, albeit weakly. Odette finds the two and tells Ramzi the mistakes he's made by doing this and (after taking back her knife) gives him some money for bread. She tells the Ringbearer not to judge him too harshly, and her explanation about the wealth gap in the Sunlands leads to her inviting them to her apartment.
Odette's apartment is filled and cluttered with vases, pots, and jars. She explains that she is trying to replicate an old and forgotten pottery technique that makes vases both sturdier and lighter— she wants to rediscover this method so that the people can more easily carry water back home.
Suddenly, someone enters the apartment in a panic and tells Odette that Ramzi has gotten into trouble outside town. Odette immediately goes to find him, and the Ringbearer follows. Just outside Sunshade, Ramzi is being hounded by two ruffians for the money Odette gave him earlier. Odette interrupts and with the Ringbearer's help, defeats the two in combat. After telling them the mistakes they've made by doing this, she takes Ramzi back into town.
Chapter I[]
The next day, the Ringbearer encounters Odette again. She asks them if they are willing to be her 'bodyguard' for an expedition into the ruins. When they agree, she explains that the real reason she is living in Sunshade specifically is to find the second half of a tome called The Book of Heaven and Earth. The language it is written in is native to the Sunlands, so Odette believes she will be able to find the missing pages there.
The Ringbearer and Odette reach the depths of the Finesand Ruins and begin to search. Odette finds something, but before she can say what it is, a Sandworm appears out of the ground. After defeating the Sandworm, Odette examines the document she found. It is in a similar but more modern language compared to The Book of Heaven and Earth. Satisfied with her discovery, Odette returns to Sunshade.
By reading the document in more detail, she realizes it reveals The Book of Heaven and Earth is about summoning rain. She sees this as an opportunity to greatly improve the living conditions in Sunshade— which makes her question why the second half of the book is missing.

Etymology[]
"Odette" is a name of French and Old German origin, meaning "wealthy."
Trivia[]
- Odette mentions in Cyrus's Chapter 2 that "we were practically joined at the hip back in the day," and she thought that watching Cyrus "go about was fun in and of itself."
- According to Cyrus's story journal, Odette is an expert in magic tomes.
- During the Revello and Odette side story, Odette receives Revello identically to the way she receives Cyrus in his Chapter 2: she slams the door in his face when he comes calling, and even uses the same line, "You're still here." Revello replies the same way Cyrus does, saying, "It's been some time, Odette," so this interaction is likely a deliberate callback.
- In Champions of the Continent:
- In Chapter I of her Traveler Story, Odette says the Ringbearer Chosen reminds her of an "old friend". She characterizes them as "the type who feels compelled to solve any mystery they find," implying she is referencing Cyrus Albright.
- In Chapter II, she talks about the same "old friend," making it more certain she is talking about Cyrus. She admits she felt as if she learned more from him than he did from her despite her being older and knowing he saw her as a mentor.
