Development[]
Octopath Traveler II was announced on September 13, 2022. A game trailer was first shown as part of a Nintendo Direct. Square Enix also announced a cross-platform release on Steam, PS5, PS4 and the Nintendo Switch. The game will be released worldwide on February 24, 2023. A special collector's edition set that includes the game's soundtrack, an art album, and a travelers bust set will also be released the same day.
The game is a completely standalone game - the world is unique, the characters are brand new, and their stories are told entirely within the game. New features that differ from the previous game include:
- A Day / Night cycle: The places you visit and what you can do there will change depending on whether it's day or night.
- Multiple Path Actions: each traveler has a different way to interact with NPCs depending on if it's day or night.
- Latent Power: A new gauge fills up as you deal damage and break foes. Once full, the character can unleash a powerful new ability.
- New chapter structures for each character's stories and unique multi-character sub-stories.
Battle System[]
The battle system in Octopath Traveler II is a turn-based battle system, similar to early RPGs such as the older Final Fantasy games. Players control up to four characters in battle against enemies. Each player character and enemy will (generally) act once each turn, and turn order is determined largely by the relative speed of each character.
The Break and Boost system has been refined from the original game. Combat now has additional elements including Latent Power. During battle, a new gauge fills up as you deal damage and break foes. Once full, the character can unleash a powerful new ability.
