- "I'm starting to look forward to this… It's gonna be my greatest hunt yet!" —Ochette, preparing to leave Beasting Village in search of the three Creatures of Legend
Ochette is one of eight playable characters in Octopath Traveler II. She is a beastling huntress who resides on the isle of Toto'haha with her fellow beastlings. Despite troubles with human islanders, she lives a carefree life... until she learns of an encroaching calamity known as the Night of the Scarlet Moon. Desperate to save her home, she sets sail in search of those who can help.
Depending upon the player's choice, Ochette is either accompanied by her lājackal Akalā or her malamaowl Mahina.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Ochette has pale gray hair in the style of a bob with bangs, brown skin and green eyes. Being a beastling, she is around 130cm (4'3") in height which is the average height of the Beastlings according to the text of the Japanese version of the Mercantile Manuscript[2], in the art book she is shown to be of similar height to all the beastling NPCs.[3] She also has cat-like ears and snout, a squirrel-like nose, and a dog-like tail, black claws on her hands, in the artbook she is shown with black fingers but this detail is not present in any official art. She is clad in a beige white and pink dress, brown shorts, brown gladiator sandals with straps around her calves, and jeweled bands around her arms.
Personality[]
Ochette is a cute, cheerful, eager, energetic beastling with a huge appetite, to the point where she finishes any non-food related tasks quickly as she can, so she can eat as soon as possible. Despite her appetite, she is kind, empathetic and generous, and she is willing to share her spoils to with those who need it more than her. Her heart contains no trace of darkness, making her impossible for the Shadow to corrupt (owing to the beastlings' innate lack of malice or greed).
Ochette's happy-go-lucky attitude is broken only when she witnesses human hunters' atrocities. She is saddened and upset by the prospect that hunters could act out of hatred rather than hunger, calling their spite "unforgivable." Even so, she harbors no grudges, and seeks to win over her ideological opponents by befriending them with shared jerky.
Unlike most other Beastlings, Ochette does not speak in broken English, having been taught proper speech by her master, Juvah. She shares this trait with the master of the Hunters' Guild.
Ochette is the most childlike of the eight protagonists, and sees Castti and Osvald as parental figures, referring to them as "Mama" and "Pops" respectively. She also forms a sisterly bond with Throné, exhibiting her beastlings' tendencies toward treating close companions as family.
History[]
"Your name is Ochette, and you are a hunter. Your tale begins on the isle of Toto'haha alongside your fellow beastlings. Despite your troubles with the human islanders, you live a carefree life. That is, until you learn of an encroaching calamity known as the Night of the Scarlet Moon. “All right, Master Juvah. I'll do it. I'll find those Creatures of Legend and bring them back.” Desperate to save your home, you set sail in search of those who can help..." - Ochette's description when selecting her.
Prior to Story[]
Ochette was born and taken in by Master Juvah, who heard a premonition regarding her and began to train her as a hunter. One day, during training in the ruins, Juvah presented her with two rare animals, allowing her to pick one as a companion. After Ochette selected and befriended one, the other immediately was consumed by a dark aura, attacking the young hunter before leaving the ruins.
Chapter 1[]
Ten years later, Ochette grew to become an accomplished hunter for her village. One day, she and her companion went hunting to chase a giant king iguana, who was wreaking havoc in the forest. After defeating it, she returned to the village, only to find a small group of humans from the neighboring village threatening the beastlings for the land. After provoking one and defeating him, the group retreated.
After splitting the food among the beastlings, she joined Master Juvah on the western hill, where she was told that she will be his successor as the village's guardian as well as discussing the changing nature of the forest. Suddenly, they were confronted by another group of humans, this time led by Cohazeh, the neighboring village's chief, who offered them some food and apologized for the incident earlier before asking for assistance on rescuing a young girl from their village who was lost in the Tombs of the Wardenbeasts. Despite misgivings from Juvah, Ochette volunteered to go find her, to the former's reluctance.
There, she found the missing girl, who at first refused to open up or go with her until Ochette gave her some jerky to eat. On the way back to the village, night began to fall, and they were suddenly engaged by unusual monsters. Outside the village, they came across the villagers, who told Ochette that Juvah was fighting a monster that attacked their village. Leaving the girl with the beastlings, Ochette went inside the village, where she found Juvah engaging the monster, only for it to injure him. Despite him telling her to run, Ochette engaged the Dark Entity and after a tough battle, defeated it.
Before Juvah could take Ochette to the ruins to show her something, Cohazeh arrived with a small group, thanking them both for defeating the monster and rescuing the girl. As such, she declared the land feud over for the time being before departing. At the ruins, Juvah showed Ochette the prophecy regarding the Night of the Scarlet Moon, a calamity that befalls the island once every 400 years. Tasked by Juvah to bring the three Creatures of Legend back to the island before the calamity started, Ochette resolved to find and bring them back to the island to save it from disaster.
If Ochette isn't your first choice of your journey, she appears the Beasting Village, offering you a snack. Accept the offer and Ochette will join the Party.
Chapter 2 (Cateracta's Route)[]
"One creature alighted on azure sea. A wave like a mountain approached the shore and threatened to swallow all that was there. The creature struck a blow of grief. The wave broke. Tranquilty was restored. The creature of legend that guarded that land was... Cateracta."
Ochette arrives at Conning Creek to retrieve the first creature of legend, Cateracta. Upon arriving, she and her companion comment on a strange noise that sounds almost as though someone was weeping. Believing it may be Cateracta, the two follow the strange noise to a remote island off the coast of Conning Creek. Before they can sail, however, they are stopped by a woman named Alpione who's barring all access to the island. Ochette then provokes and defeats her after a quick battle, and while Alpione is knocked out, she and her companion slip over onto the island.
There, Ochette and her companion discover a set of very large bones washed ashore on the island. They discover that the weeping sound from before was actually the noise of sea wind whistling through the creature's skeleton. They're given little time to ponder on what beast made these bones, though, as Alpione has already caught up and informs the duo that these are the bones of Cateracta. She asserts to Ochette that there's nothing to take left, implying others have come to loot the corpse, and when Ochette explains her mission and that she didn't intend to take anything from the beast, Alpione seems to have a change of heart. Her hostility from before melts away and she leads Ochette into a strange cave called the Cavern of the Sea God, informing Ochette that she wants to show and tell her something.
Deep in the cave's quarters, Ochette and Alpione share a meal as Alpione tells Ochette the story of Cateracta's death. She tells of someone called the Dark Hunter who killed Cateracta single-handedly and left without taking any bounty. Guardians of Cateracta, including Alpione herself, came to the legend's defense, but they were all killed with only Alpione surviving the battle. After the two converse some more, Alpione feels confident trusting Ochette with what she'd been protecting here all this time.
Alpione reveals that Cateracta laid an egg right before her death and, leading Ochette to it, she asks the beastling to take it on her travels. Just as Ochette reaches down, the egg begins to hatch and reveals a tiny, adorable sea dragon. Ochette seems hesitant at first in the baby dragon's ability to help in the calamity, but Alpione and the dragon convince her otherwise. Ochette decides to name the baby Acta and Ochette departs from Conning Creek with Cateracta's baby in tow.
Crossed Paths, Part One[]
Ochette and Castti made their way to Cropdale where they came across a meat vendor to the former's delight. After Castti purchases a skewer for Ochette, they found that the meat was very old (to Ochette's disgust) and that due to recent poor hunting yields, meat has not been as common, so both decided to head to the Animal Trail to see what the problem was. While there, they came across a dire duordour that attacked them out of fear. After fending it off, they followed it to the back of the trail. As they did so, Ochette translated warnings from the animals to leave the forest immediately. Despite this, they found the wounded dourdour further down and after some persuasion, Castti treated the beast's wounds, affectionally calling it "Wooly-Ooly" when she was finished, to Ochette's skepticism and the beast's delight. Ochette then translated the reason for the duordour's attack, as it and the forest has been under attack by a shadowy being. Afterwards, both travelers departed the forest.
Chapter 2 (Tera's Route)[]
"One creature alighted on red wilds. A mountain glowed and boiled with heat as its time to erupt drew near. The creature struck a blow of rage. The mountain cracked and sank into a valley. The creature of legend that guarded that land was named... Tera."
Ochette finds herself in the village of Crackridge where she speaks with some of the villagers on the whereabouts of the Creature of Legend, Tera. Unfortunately for her, however, the entire village seems fearful of the beast and even condemns Ochette for speaking of him. It seems Tera is actually sleeping far below the valley of Crackridge, and whenever his slumber is disturbed a volley of powerful earthquakes are unleashed. So, the villagers have all opted to merely let the beast rest for eternity. Ochette isn't swayed, however, and is still determined to find Tera. Fortunately for her, she finds a hungry young man named Pom, who promises to take her to Tera if Ochette fetches him some Aromatic Jerky. After getting the man his meal, Pom told Ochette of Tera's whereabouts and also decided to accompany her.
The two journey within the valley of Crackridge where, eventually, they come upon a great crevasse that seems to extend forever. Ochette can feel and hear Tera's snoring, however, and knows that the legendary beast is nestled comfortably in the fissure. The beastling screams a mighty yowl to wake and lure Tera from his resting place and, as Tera revealed himself in a fit of wild rage after being awakened and attacked the young hunter and her companions, only to be defeated and subdued.
After Tera is calmed, he recognized Ochette as a beastling and correctly assumed that his slumber had been disturbed for the Night of the Scarlet Moon. as well as revealing that another hunter who confronted him in an attempt to best him, with both Tera and the hunter grievously wounded in the battle, which was why Tera has been sleeping in the ravine to recover his strength.
Back in Crackridge, the villagers swarm Ochette as her fight with Tera had sent earthquake after earthquake up to the village. Ochette assured the village that she is taking Tera with her and that the earthquakes will cease. Meanwhile, Pom, having been thoroughly terrified by the battle with Tera, opts out of being a hunter, but told Ochette that he has big plans of being a cattle rancher instead. After saying their farewells, Ochette left town to pursue the final legendary beast.
Chapter 2 (Glacis' Route)[]
"One creature descended to silver snows. A great blizzard rose as if to freeze the continent solid. The creature struck a blow of reproof. The snows scattered and fell making a mountain that reached the heavens. The creature of legend that guarded that land was named... Glacis."
Ochette arrived in Stormhail for the Sacred Peak Altahe, where Glacis makes her home. She's immediately thwarted by a Sanctum Knight standing guard at the gate to Altahe. After not allowing Ochette to pass, she provoked and defeated him in order to pass the gate.
At the base of Altahe, Ochette attempts to fire her and her companion up by howling loudly which sends an avalanche down the side of the mountain. Though no one gets hurt, a man named Heig appeared to investigate the noise. Both seem to be confused as to why the other is there and Heig advised Ochette to go home as the summit is far too dangerous. According to him, the snow on this mountain is not normal snow - it snows with hate.
Heig advanced up the mountain and Ochette later catches up to him where she found the man consoling a long-dead body frozen in the snow. When Ochette approaches, Heig explained that the body is actually his nephew. He later goes on to explain that everyone he used to hunt with now is dead - killed by Glacis. Heig goes on to explain that he is a member of the band of hunters who'd come to kill Glacis, citing that because Glacis was so revered as a legendary beast that the reward for obtaining her would be paramount. Since their failure, Heig has been coming to the mountain to try to find all of his hunting party, and Ochette's avalanche allowed him to find the very last member. Ochette asks Heig what he is planning now, with the hunter vengefully retorted before going on ahead that he will kill Glacis for everyone who didn't make it out.
Ochette and the travelers eventually catch up to Heig on the summit of Altahe, where he is gravely injured. Suddenly, Glacis appears and unleashes a mighty blizzard, demanding the intruders to leave. Ochette then noticed a nest of cracked eggs and asked about them, with Heig explaining that the hunters broke them last they attempted to take down Glacis, but failed. Ochette is furious at this and condemns Heig's actions before she attempted to reason with Glacis and explain she is not there to hurt her or her family. Glacis, clouded by hatred, refused to listen and Ochette and her companions engaged her in battle.
After defeating and subduing Glacis, Ochette is able to explain why she is there, with Glacis being reminded of her duty as a guardian and, although she was unable to protect her eggs, she knows she can protect Ochette and Toto'haha and agreed to leave with her. As Ochette begins to descend the mountain she attempted to reason with the injured Heig to come down the mountain before forcing him down the mountain to his home in Stormhail. Ochette then hears the rest of Heig's story involving the Dark Hunter after the latter regains his strength and expresses his regret on his decisions before he is given some jerky by Ochette. Later, with all three legendary beasts in tow, Ochette departed Stormhail to return to Toto'haha.
Chapter 3[]
Ochette returns to the island, successful in her mission in retrieving the three Beasts of Legend. Meanwhile, Juvah and the other beastlings have been preparing for the coming calamity, all while waiting for her return. With the beasts by their side, Ochette and the others prepare for the catastrophe. Right before it begins, however, they are confronted by Cohazeh, who has returned to settle matters regarding border disputes, unaware of the Night of the Scarlet Moon's imminent arrival. Juvah tells her to let that grudge go as there are much bigger things at stake, to no avail, causing Cohazeh to leave in disgust. Before the fight begins, Juvah asks Ochette what she truly fights for, to which she does not know how to respond. Soon after, the moon suddenly becomes stained red, signaling that the Night of the Scarlet Moon is finally upon them.
Out of nowhere, countless monsters begin ravaging the island and attacking its residents. Thanks to the efforts of Ochette, the Beasts of Legend, and the beastling village, the monsters are unable to break through. However, all throughout the battle, Ochette takes note of a familiar scent wandering the island. Meanwhile, Cohazeh and her people suddenly run back to the beastling village, their own village razed by the beasts. After witnessing the beastlings go out of their way to help them and realizing that if they stand back and do nothing their own home will be lost, Cohazeh rallies her men to action and tells them to fight alongside the beastlings to push back the monsters.
Eventually, the fight seems to be slowing down and working in Ochettte's favor. Unfortunately, she soon finds herself face-to-face with the familiar scent she noticed earlier, revealed to be the hunting companion that she had not chosen that fateful day ten years ago, now overcome with darkness and tortured and contorted into a massive beast called the Darkling. Its power proves to be too much for even the combined might of Ochette, Master Juvah, and the Beasts of Legend, and in the chaos, Ochette and her companion are flung into the ocean. All seems lost until a faint blue light suddenly begins swelling up inside her companion: the Sacred Flame. With its power on their side, Ochette and her companion arise from the ocean once more to fight. It is then she realizes what she fights for: she fights for her home and the people on it. Seeing what the poor creature has now become, she resolves to put them out of their misery, and rushes to battle alongside her newly-powered companion and a matured Acta.
After the battle, the Darkling is left battered and on the verge of death. Despite this, Ochette feels guilt regarding the beast's fate, as she feels responsible for it. Her companion notes that that feeling is because of her kind heart, and expresses their gratitude to her as they understood that if she had chosen it instead of them that day, they would've suffered that fate in its place. With those words, Ochette decides to soothe the dying beast in its final moments, offering it some food and telling it that its suffering is finally over. She promises to meet again should they see each other in the next life, and the beast finally withers away, its soul at ease.
With the calamity over, the moon returns to its normal shine. Seeing the beastlings risk their lives for them caused Cohazeh to have a change of heart regarding relations with them, and she resolves to pursue coexistence with them instead of competition. Meanwhile, Ochette decides to fully embrace her role as defender of Toto'haha, and sets off a new hunt all her own, with her companions by her side.
Crossed Paths, Part 2[]
Ochette and Castti returned to Cropdale and noticed that the meat vendor that was once near the entrance had gone. Both then decided to go back to the Animal Trail to check on "Wooly-Ooly". Upon their arrival, they discovered the entire forest cloaked in shadow. While traversing, they discover a shadowy being blocking the trail. As they approached it, Castti was suddenly hit with a dizzy spell, forcing Ochette to engage it on her own. After defeating it and forcing it to retreat, they came across "Wooly-Ooly," who was heavily injured from defending the retreating animals. After Castti treated its wounds, they continued on until Ochette was suddenly separated from Castti. Following her scent, she eventually found Castti succumbing to the thrall of a shadow manifestation. As the darkness had no effect on her due to her nature, she yelled Castti's name, breaking the hold of the darkness on her. Together, they engaged the darkness in battle and defeated it, returning the forest to normal.
Relationships[]
Island Master Juvah: He is the master of beastmen living in Toto'haha and Ochette's teacher.
Castti Florenz: In addition to having their Crossed Paths together, Ochette looks up to Castti as the maternal figure she never had, explicitly calling her "Ma" during their second adventure at Cropdale.
Battle[]
Talent[]
Ochette's Talent is Capture/Prepare. It allows her to Capture monsters during battle, and later summon them in battle, or prepare them and turn them into items. Ochette can attempt to capture certain monsters in battle with a given probability based on the monster's health, or can automatically capture monsters she defeated with a 25% chance. (Human opponents can never be captured.) Each monster has a specific skill associated with them, which they will use when Ochette summons them in battle. Unlike H'aanit, Ochette can summon monsters unlimited times without releasing them into the wild, though boss-level monsters can only be used once per battle. Additionally, captured monsters can be Prepared into items, which consumes the monster and converts it into specific food items dependent on the type of monster.
Ochette's roster maxes out at six capturable monsters. That said, certain plot-relevant monsters can be added without consuming one of those slots. The first of these is Akala the jackal or Mahina the owl, who will discover and then attack a weapon and elemental weakness, respectively.
Because Ochette has access to six slots in addition to her pet, she can quite easily be positioned to exploit every weapon and elemental weakness before even starting anyone's Chapter 2.
Latent Power[]
Ochette's Latent Power is Animal Instincts, which allows her to use certain special skills without consuming SP.
- Beastly Claws: A powerful physical attack on all foes.
- Beastly Howl: Reduce all kinds of defense on all foes. Also reduce their Shield points regardless of their weakness.
- Beastly Fangs: A highly powerful physical attack on a single foe.

Subjobs[]
Below are the sprites and appearance changes for Ochette with each basic Subjob:
Each time a subjob is selected the appearance of the character will also change. The first sprite is the appearance with no Subjob equipped.
Recommended Subjobs[]
- Warrior plays to Ochette's strengths as a physical attacker. The Hunter's base toolkit excels at exploiting Bow weaknesses, but not much else; by adding Warrior as a subjob, Ochette can wield a total of four weapon types and gains access to many powerful skills, turning her from a shield-breaker into a genuine damage-dealer. It also gives her some valuable Hit Points.
- Thief is an alternative option, lending her four weapons and boosting her Speed to allow her to strike early. As Ochette has the highest native Accuracy, this subjob can augment this with increased Critical Hit rates. It also allows her to supplement Leghold Trap with Armor Corrosive, centralizing some of the most important debuffs in one character. Also, since buffs do not affect Ochette's captured beasts, Armor Corrosive is the only way to increase the damage dealt by Provoke.
- Arcanist, Conjurer or Armsmaster can provide great viability depending on which pet Ochette took. Both Mahina and Akala will allow her to hit any weakness of either physical or elemental nature; the listed jobs will give her coverage on as many of the others as possible. (To be sure, Ochette can accomplish such coverage long earlier with perspicacious choice of captured monsters.)
Due to the flexibilty of subjobs, any character can fill any role with the right equipment and skills, with proper planning, any of the travelers can perform decently on any subjob.

Etymology[]
"Ochette" is derived from the Italian word "ochetta," meaning "gosling" or "silly, naive girl." Ochette's name reflects her cheerful, happy-go-lucky personality and inexperience with the world.
Trivia[]
- Ochette is the first playable character in the series who isn’t human.
- Ochette is one of only two travelers, the other being H'aanit, whose bosses are all inhuman/bestial in some form.
- Ochette is the only Octopath Traveler character with three versions of her artwork, one with Akalā and Mahina, one without Akalā and one without either of them. This is because choosing between the two animals was meant to be a secret.
- Champions of the Continent avoids canonizing Ochette's partner; during the time that Sail interacts with her, neither Akalā nor Mahina appears, as Ochette mentions her "partner" is out at the moment. In gameplay, she can summon either one as part of her moveset if the player has the appropriate Keeper equipped.
- Ochette's height is very inconsistent when she's drawn with human characters, often appearing smaller than her implied 130 cm (4'3") height.
- Ochette's ear design is inconsistent as she has two different sets of ears in her artwork. In her provoke artwork she has the insides of her ears colored white while in her befriend artwork the inside of her ears are colored pink with white tuffs coming out. This extends to promotional material as well.
- Ochette's claws are not drawn in any of her in-game artwork or in her Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent artwork, but are present in the Break & Boost vol. 2 cover and the daytime art for the OST.
- Designer Naoki Ikushima in an interview recalls that Ochette's ears were changed from floppy ears to pointy ears because the former wouldn't look clear on a sprite.[4]
- Designer Naoki Ikushima gave Akalā and Mahina their names.[4]
- Writer Kakunoshin Futsuzawa describes Ochette's story as a fairly simple story about collecting legendary monsters. He wanted to create a narrative that could be enjoyed visually, without having to think too deeply.[4]
- Ochette is Kakunoshin Futsuzawa's favorite character.[4]
- Ochette is described in the artbook as not being a cat-eared girl (i.e. catgirl) character, but rather as a beast-like person with well-developed ears.[5]
- As revealed in her travel banter with Temenos, Ochette draws scribbles like a child, but puts all of her passion into her art.
- Despite her constant hunger for meat, Ochette dislikes fruits and vegetables.
- Ochette's voice was known as the loudest in Toto'haha.
- According to her travel banter, Ochette once let fly an arrow that sheared off part of Juvah's mane. She suspects that this incident is what led him to teach her better communication in the form of proper speech.
- In travel banter, Partitio calls Ochette a "young cowgirl."
- Ochette appears to believe in reincarnation, as she mentions the possibility that the Darkling of the Sorrowful Moon might be reborn into the world.
- In travel banter with Osvald, Ochette suggests that Osvald should imbue her arrows with magic to grant them elemental effects. Osvald seems intrigued by the idea until she proposes to call the result "Projectiles by Pops," at which point he loses interest.
- When writing Ochette's theme, Yasunori Nishiki wanted to convey a warm sense of fun and optimism while also expressing the gravity of her mission. As such, he used lively percussion and a leaping melody to express her free-spirited, energetic side while using sweeping strings to embody the grandeur of her mission.[6]
- When composing Ochette's unique final battle theme, “The Journey for Legends Ends," Yasunori Nishiki sought to maintain the delicate balance between her serious story battles and her unique character. As such, he made sure that the music didn’t have too much of a “life-or-death battle” or “tragic heroism” vibe to it, but also crafted the arrangement to reflect how cool she is.[7]
- When asked to describe Beastling romance, Ochette says that her ma and pa bonded over their love of meat. She also describes love as causing her tail to wag uncontrollably, which she claims is embarrassing.
- It's possible that Juvah never taught Ochette the current language of the beastlings, as every beastling in her story speaks to her using "human speech" instead.
- Despite her proficiency with "human speech," there are still some words that Ochette finds hard to pronounce, like Partitio's name.
- Although Cateracta's Route is Ochette's Chapter 2 with the lowest recommended level, and therefore the one that most players will likely complete first, Ochette's story journal arranges her Chapter 2 in the order of Tera's Route, Cateracta's Route, and Glacis's Route.
- Though Octopath Traveler II never specifies the status of Ochette's parents, Champions of the Continent implies that she is an orphan, since Juvah's biography calls him Ochette's "adoptive father."
