- "In the chaos and disorder that followed the fall of House Azelhart, a group of men seized power. They call themselves the Obsidians... Working in the shadows, just out of the sight of Geoffrey's watchful eye, they made one shady deal after the next, filling their coffers and making powerful friends. Swayed by the influence of their coin, countless once-lawful men cast their lot with these villains. And the ones that didn't... I spent years trying to follow the trail of corruption. To find who it led to, where the blood money flowed... In the end, I found... that I was up against an opponent too evil." —Revello Forsythe

The Obsidians are a major antagonist group in Octopath Traveler, associated with the mark of a crow. Established by Simeon and Mattias, this group of criminal mercenaries is dedicated to aiding Lyblac and disposing of anyone who discovers her goal.
History[]
One hundred and fifteen years before the events of Octopath Traveler, Lyblac granted Mattias eternal youth. He then co-founded the Obsidians alongside Simeon (whom Lyblac had also blessed with agelessness), and Simeon became the Obsidians' leader while Mattias headed a separate cult worshiping Galdera.
Thirteen years prior to the events of Octopath Traveler, the Obsidians began operating in the shadows of Noblecourt. They gradually amassed wealth and power through illicit business transactions, killing their opponents and corrupting many of Noblecourt's leaders. At some point Obsidians came to Geoffrey Azelhart with sweet words and false promises, but when he refused their advances, they sent assassins after his life. Geoffrey not only survived these attempts, but learned about the Gate of Finis - a secret that the Obsidians would kill to protect.
Eleven years prior to the events of Octopath Traveler, Simeon infiltrated House Azelhart under the guise of a gardener. One year later, he and two of his most prominent henchmen (Rufus and Albus) slipped into the manor to assassinate Geoffrey. Primrose Azelhart watched from the shadows as the three men, hooded and cloaked, killed her father. Before the three left, she noted their crow tattoos and resolved to take vengeance upon them. After Geoffrey's death, Noblecourt fell into crime and the Obsidians seized power within the city.
That same year, the Obsidians assassinated the head of House Ravus. In the chaos following his death, they stole the dragonstones in his possession, passing the dragonstones on to Lyblac so that she could open the Gate of Finis.
Since then, the Obsidians continued to work in the shadows on Lyblac's behalf.
Story[]
Primrose's story revolves around her quest for vengeance on the three men who murdered her father, leading her to track down and kill each of the Obsidians' leaders. When Rufus visits Sunshade, Primrose follows him to the Obsidian Parlor and kills him, then follows his directions to Noblecourt. After infiltrating the Obsidian Manse, she slays Albus, only to suffer a mortal wound from Simeon and at the same time discovery that he is the mastermind behind her father's death. After recovering, Primrose journeys to Everhold Amphitheatre and confronts Simeon, ultimately killing him and completing her quest to avenge her father.
Ophilia's story revolves around completing the Kindling, which Mattias seeks to ruin in order to summon the Accurst Flame. With the Obsidians' help, Mattias murders Archbishop Josef, then manipulate the archbishop's daughter Lianna into helping him corrupt the Sacred Flame. Ophilia thwarts this dark ritual and kills Mattias, restoring light to the land.
Tressa's journey follows in the footsteps of Graham Crossford, whose journal she obtains from Leon. Unbeknownst to her, Graham Crossford and his bloodline are crucial to resurrecting Galdera, which causes Obsidian agents Esmeralda and an unnamed man to follow Tressa and steal the journal, hoping to find information on the whereabouts of Graham's son, Kit Crossford. However, Tressa manages to defeat Esmeralda and reclaim Graham's journal.
Although the Obsidians do not play a direct role in Therion's story, their actions provide the basis for his quest, as Therion's journey requires him to collect the dragonstones scattered throughout the land and restore them to Cordelia Ravus.
At the end of Octopath Traveler, Lyblac gathers all of the keys required to defeat Galdera, but she and the Fallen God are defeated and sealed away by the eight travelers. With all of their leaders slain, the Obsidians most likely collapsed, freeing Orsterra from their covert tyranny.

Trivia[]
- Despite their influence over the overall plot, the Obsidians only appear directly in three of the eight travelers' stories.
- The Obsidians send messages by raven.
- The black attire worn by all of the Obsidians is unconventional for Orsterra's medieval setting, so the developers used belts and cords to make them more appropriate for the era.[1]
- As a thematic connection, Raven enemies frequently appear in random encounters near the locations of Primrose's story chapters. Various species of ravens flock in the countrysides around Noblecourt and Everhold, along the Secret Path to the Obsidian Parlor, and inside the Obsidian Manse, all of which have strong ties to the Obsidians.
