The Mystery Man and Shady Figure are enemies in Octopath Traveler. They are the bosses in Chapter 3 of Ophilia’s story.
Story[]
The Mystery Man and Shady Figure are members of the cult dedicated to the Savior, who seeks to bring Galdera’s flame to Orsterra.
Intending to steal the sacred ember from the Flamebearer, the two men kidnap Lysa, the daughter of Bishop Donovan. A young boy, Daniel, delivers a ransom letter to Donovan on their behalf.
Ophilia procures a confession from Donovan after realizing that Daniel’s delivery caused Donovan’s troubled behavior. She follows the letter’s directions to the Seaside Grotto, where she confronts the two cultists and rescues Lysa. After their defeat, the survivor of the pair commits suicide by poison, but not before telling Ophilia that she will be meet their Savior soon enough.
Battle[]
The Mystery Man and Shady Figure begin battle by locking off their elemental weaknesses. The Shady Figure will increase his actions per turn to 2.
The majority of attacks used by the two men are elemental, so having a Cleric cast Reflective Veil will help alleviate the damage.
Once one of the men dies, the surviving one will unlock his elemental weaknesses, increase his shields by 3, and increase his actions per turn to 3.
- Your foe is being protected by an unseen force...: Used once as very first action. Seals Mystery Man and Shady Figures' elemental weaknesses.
- Fireball: Elemental damage, . Targets entire party.
- Icewind: Elemental damage, . Targets entire party.
- Lightning Bolt: Elemental damage, . Targets entire party.
- Arcane Blade: Heavy elemental damage, single target. Cannot be reflected by Reflective Veil or similar. Can be dodged with Sidestep.
- Your foe seethes with rage...!: Used once if Shady Figure is defeated. The following effects are applied to Mystery Man:
- Immediately recovers 3 shields; maximum shield increased to 8.
- Actions per turn increased from one to three.
- The unseen force has dissipated!: All sealed weaknesses are unlocked.
- Stops using the following abilities: Fireball, Icewind, and Lightning Bolt
- Unlocks the following abilities:
- Channel Energy: Used as first action each turn. Gains Increased Elemental Attack for 1 turn.
- Fire Storm: Elemental damage, . Targets entire party. Hits two times.
- Heal Wounds: Both men recover 800 HP.
- Immediately recovers 3 shields; maximum shield increased to 7.
- Actions per turn increased from two to three.
- The unseen force has dissipated!: All sealed weaknesses are unlocked.
- Stops using the following abilities: Luminescence, Heal Wounds, and Arcane Enhancement
- Unlocks the following abilities:
- Arcane Blade: Heavy elemental damage, single target. Cannot be reflected by Reflective Veil. Can be dodged with Sidestep.
- Black Magic: Elemental damage, . Targets entire party. Chance of inflicting Terror for 4 turns.

- If Mystery Man is defeated first, Shady Figure will not use Your foe trembles with profound sorrow... until the second action of the current turn.
- Both men are weak to every element their partner can cast.
- Shady Figure was probably a Cleric before converting to the cult of the Savior, given that his moveset revolves around the cleric abilities Luminescence and Heal Wounds.
- Mystery Man was probably a Scholar, as his skills are identical to the scholar's elemental attacks.
- According to Ophilia's story Journal, only one of the cultists survived to the end of the battle and then poisoned himself, implying that Ophilia herself killed the other.
