- "My goodness, just look at all these tomes! This place is a veritable mountain of academic treasure." —Scholar at the local book market
Montwise is a town in Octopath Traveler II, located in the eastern Crestlands. This academic hub contains an underground arena and serves as the setting for Hikari's Chapter 2, Throné's Chapter 3: Father's Route, and Osvald's Chapter 4, as well as Osvald and Partitio's final Crossed Path episode.

Etymology[]
"Montwise" is comprised of "mont" + "wise," referring to the city's location in the mountains and the wisdom contained in its vast library. Although "monte" (from which "mont" is probably derived) is a Spanish word literally meaning "mountain," it can also refer to a heap of cards left after dealing, as well as card games of chance associated with con men. These gambling-related associations could allude to the financially troubled Regulus's being scammed by local moneylenders.
Trivia[]
- The price to restore reputation in Montwise is 4,500 leaves.
- Montwise is Octopath Traveler II's equivalent to Atlasdam, as both towns serve as the academic centers of their games and contain a prominent library. The griffins and king's heads carved into Montwise's library walls are heavily reminiscent of those that appear on Atlasdam's library.
- Montwise also shares the spirit of Victors Hollow, as both towns contain an arena that serves as the setting of each game's Warrior protagonist's Chapter 2.
- A Gladiator found in Montwise's tavern at night possesses a biography structured like those of the gladiators in Victors Hollow: "Height: 4 cubits \ Weight: 13 stone \ Record: 48 wins, 6 losses \ Moniker: The Brazen Brute \ A man luckier than he is strong, and a true testament to fortune favoring the bold."
- According to a local Merchant, Montwise's old book market is the best in the eastern and western continents. It is also noted to contain multiple heretical works, and is strictly controlled so that only the best books are included.
- The theme "Home of Wisdom and the Arts" track was listed on Yasunori Nishiki's order as “Mountain Town B: Library.” He received this description along with some video of the Montwise library, which he used as his inspiration as he composed. As the piece's title indicates, the library houses the treasury of wisdom and knowledge handed down by generation after generation of Solistia’s people, so he worked to express both a solemn feel and a sense of profundity evoking that history. The harpsichord is strongly associated with baroque court music, making it useful as a clear and iconic instrument for conveying a sense of solemn stateliness.[1]
