Description[]
As the greatest city in the Sunlands, Marsalim contains many sandstone buildings, streams of flowing water, and an immense palace free from the sweltering sun. Marsalim serves as the unified center of many disparate desert tribes.

Etymology[]
Marsalim is one of two cities in Octopath Traveler whose name is not a compound. It may be comprised of the Maltese word "marsa" (meaning "harbor" or "port") and the Middle Eastern suffix "-lim," which may have functioned as a title or designation for a deity or powerful entity. If this is the case, "Marsalim" would refer to a "harbor" of the divine or some other power, possibly referring to the city as the seat of the Sunlands's king.
Trivia[]
- The price to restore reputation in Marsalim is 10,000 leaves.
- Marsalim is the the seat of the Yashum Clan.
- According to one townsperson, "The people of Marsalim are indebted to the Order of the Sacred Flame," and when Guided he says, "Haven't seen you around, but if you're a cleric, we owe you a debt of thanks." The reason for this "debt" to the Order is unclear; however, since King Khalim mentions that every time calamity threatens his kingdom, a hero with "steel in their eyes has stepped forward to save it," it is possible that the Knights Ardante have saved the city in the past.
- The biography of the Elderly Woman notes that she has a wealth of knowledge regarding various troubles the people were forced to contend with in the past, be they troubles of monsters or men, which may also refer to Marsalim's history of dangers. She also mentions when Provoked, "Oh, what a sight to see. I used to work with animals in my youth."
- The Knights Ardante are regularly stationed in the city. Despite its ties to the Order, Marsalim lacks a cathedral or chapel of its own.
- The Knights Ardante have a stronghold in the upper right side of the city (though it appears to be an otherwise regular multi-story building), where the Knight outside mentions "You will find Lady Eliza here on most days." Said Knight's biography notes that he has been dispatched to Marsalim to observe and report on the faith of the populace, given Marsalim's lack of a church in which the Sacred Flame can be properly worshiped.
- Failing a Path Action on this Knight will prompt him to burst out, "Do you mean to impugn the honor of the Knights Ardante!?" He also remains steadfast in the face of Allure: "I won't be swayed by your wiles. However, if you wish someone to come to your aide, I shall." ("Aide" is incidentally incorrect here and should be "aid.")
- The Knight Ardante on the west side of the city, according to his biography, has been dispatched to deal with any roving bandits, vicious fiends, or other villainous beings that may be found in the many abandoned ruins near Marsalim. He also appears to have heard of Olberic (or possibly mistakes him as Erhardt, given the latter's infamy and relocation to the Sunlands), as he responds to Challenge by exclaiming, "You cannot be the infamous knight of Hornburg!" Furthermore, he seems to have heard tell of H'aanit, possibly through Eliza; when Provoked, he mentions, "I've heard tell of one who could bend beasts to her will. Is it you?"
- Likewise, the Knight Ardante by the headquarters mentions when Challenged, "Your reputation precedes you. I would gladly test my abilities against yours," and when Provoked mentions H'aanit by name: "You must be H'aanit the Huntress. Lady Eliza speaks quite highly of you."
- Both Knights address Ophilia by name as "Sister Ophilia" when Guided.
- When Allured, many of Marsalim's townspeople will note that Primrose's dancing is "familiar," given the city's proximity to Sunshade.
- Marsalim's ruler can trace his lineage back to a man named Marsalim the Wise.
- The Old Aristocrat hails from a family that fell from grace when he was young, but he worked tirelessly to rebuild their estate and now leads a life of decadence. Interestingly, he is one of the few NPCs unimpressed by Primrose's beauty when Allured: "Not the fairest damsel I've ever seen, but you have spirit." He also has an amusing response to Challenge: "Decades too soon to be challenging me. Centuries even." When Provoked, he calls on his bodyguard before deciding to battle himself: "Yuri! No, wait. There's life in this old dog yet!"
- When Parting Ways, the Know-it-all's Father will deliver a rather bold pledge: "I would follow you to the end of time itself."
- The Townsperson at the city entrance, who used to be a thief, has a humorous response to Challenge: "Don't you dare underestimate my abilities when it comes to running away!"
- The Young Soldier has an amusing response to Allure: "I-I-I really mustn't... B-but then again..." Parting Ways elicits his crying, "Cripes! I'll be in trouble for this!"
- The Townsperson guarding the house on the left side of the city has an extremely high Challenge requirement—level 70—meaning that he almost always must be Provoked instead. The house he guards contains a purple chest and three more NPCs (the most in any guarded house in the game): a traveling dancer who came to town and married a man forty years her senior, with whom she has a six-year-old son who believes his father is his grandfather. Neither of his parents have chosen to correct this misconception, presumably because their marriage is frowned upon by the general populace.
- The Old Man, who fell "madly in love" with his dancer wife and proposed to her after a whirlwind courtship, responds to Allure, "My wife was the best dancer. Let me tell you more about her." He also seems grateful for Ophilia's visitation, as he replies to Guide, "Thank you for coming to our house, Sister."
