Mao is a character in Octopath Traveler II. She is the resident apothecary of Sai, appearing in Castti's Chapter 2: Sai Route.

Personality[]
Mao is a compassionate and dedicated healer, patiently treating Sai's wounded despite Edmund's noisy interruptions. She eagerly accepts Castti's aid in the treating the wounded.
Story[]
Mao has been working in Sai for over ten years, dedicated to healing the city's wounded soldiers. Four years prior to the events of the game, she welcomed Eir's Apothecaries to Sai, and at the same time met Castti, who led the treatment of the wounded.
During Castti's Chapter 2, Mao accepts Castti's healing help. She ignores Edmund's discouragement toward her patient treatment approach, and shares what she knows of Castti's former visit.

"Mao" is a name of Asian origin, associated with several different meanings. In Japanese, the name means "true center," symbolizing unity and balance. In Chinese, Mao is signified by the character 猫, and among other things can mean "cat." Mao's name likely represents her peaceful presence in the midst of Sai's war.
