- "Hoowoo… are you… a girl, too?" —Mahina, before Ochette chooses her companion
Mahina is a character in Octopath Traveler II. She is a malamaowl, described as serene in the grace of the moon, with wings that shape the air's currents—and magical power, too. If selected as Ochette's companion, Mahina acts as both a younger and older sister to her along her journey.
If Ochette chooses Akalā to be her companion instead, however, a corrupted version of Mahina will become the final boss of her story.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Mahina is a white-and-brown owl with a crescent moon marking on her chest.
Personality[]
Mahina is friendlier than Akalā and very loyal, but isn't as calm as him in tense scenarios. If Ochette starts becoming too impatient or impulsive, Mahina will help remind her of her responsibilities.
Battle[]
In contrast to Ochette, whose stats favor physical damage, Mahina casts magic that targets a foe's elemental weaknesses. Her spells don't deal as much damage as Akalā, in exchange for giving Ochette more coverage. She will always cast magic that a foe is weak to, but the foe and weakness is chosen at random e.g. if fighting a Lloris and Shambling Weed, she will either target the former with either or magic, or the latter with either or .
During the battle against the Darkling of the Sorrowful Moon, and when Ochette is fully boosted after completing her story, Mahina casts , or magic that targets all foes, and will always cast magic that at least one foe is weak to, as well as takes on a bigger, “Awakened” form.

Story[]
(I don't think this is where I should be going at the moment...) The following section contains potential story spoilers! |
When Ochette was ten years old, Juvah took her to receive an animal companion to aid her during hunts. However, there was a caveat—while there were two animals, the malamaowl Mahina and the lājackal Akalā, Ochette was only permitted to choose one. If the player picks Akalā over Mahina, the latter will become overtaken by darkness and attack Ochette, vanishing from the story for a time. However, the reverse occurs if Mahina is chosen instead.
If chosen as Ochette's companion, Mahina will accompany Ochette during all of her story chapters, including her Crossed Path chapters with Castti.
Ten years after Ochette chooses Mahina as her companion, Mahina helps Ochette chase after a gluttonous lizard called the King Iguana, as it had begun eating far more than it should have and was threatening the natural order. Ochette and Mahina eventually catch up to the creature and capture it, and as tempting as it is to Ochette to eat it, Mahina reminds her that the King Iguana's meat was for the people of Beasting Village, not her exclusively.
Mahina then accompanies Ochette on her quest to gather the three Creatures of Legend: Cateracta, Tera, and Glacis.
During the Night of the Scarlet Moon, Mahina and Ochette plunge together into the ocean, where Mahina receives the power of the First Flame. With its power, Mahina helps Ochette defeat the Darkling of the Sorrowful Moon and save Toto'haha from the calamity.

Etymology[]
"Mahina" is the Hawaiian word for "moon," as well as the name of the moon deity in Hawaiian mythology. "Malama" also doubles as the Hawaiian word for moon (in addition to carrying the meaning "to take care of," "preserve," or "protect"). Therefore the name of Mahina’s species, "malamaowl," means "moon owl." This meaning, alongside Akalā's analogical naming convention relating to the sun, further strengthens the day/night duality represented by Ochette's two companions.
Trivia[]
- Mahina shares the same voice actor as Ophilia from the original Octopath Traveler.
- Mahina appears to be based on a Barn Owl.
- When summoned at maximum boost in her Azure form, Mahina's sprite changes to resemble a healthy version of the Malamaowl of the Sorrowful Moon, with pink stripes along her feathers and a pair of pink leg cuffs reminiscent of Akalā's blue ones.
