"I want to experience the history of all of Orsterra, not just the Flatlands!" — Laura
Laura is a character in Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent.
Background[]
Raised from a noble family, Laura has always had dreams of becoming a scholar of ancient civilizations. In particular, the ancient tribes of the Flatlands have caught her interest and she is a studious woman of certain renown. Recently, she's been accepted into the Royal Academy of Atlasdam and is studying for an exam on ancient civilizations. While she's passionate about her work, her father is largely disapproving of her choice of career and implores her to focus on being a good future wife for her fiancé, Scott, in order to benefit their family's shrinking influence. Laura herself is largely indifferent to Scott, although she does feel comforted by the fact that he's encouraging of her continuing her studies.
Traveler Story[]
Prologue[]
On her visit to Theatropolis, Laura meets up with the Chosen One and requests them to help her find a book concerning the history of the various tribes of the Flatlands, The Birth of the Kingdom of Wold. After obtaining her book, the pair have a chance encounter with Laura's father who tries to convince Laura to focus on being a good wife as any good noblewoman would do. After a brief exchange, Laura's father comments that he has no fears of his daughter's decision if she can pass her exam to make it onto an exclusive excavation team.
Chapter I[]
With a newfound resolve to please her father, Laura sets out to study once more before she comes across her fiancé, Scott. As his profession as an ancient artifacts merchant, Scott asks Laura to appraise a jar piece for him. Subsequently, Scott proposes that he and Laura set up an appraisal system for the various works he comes across so that way he can gain a larger profit and she can have her influence as a respected scholar spread. Before leaving, Scott voices his support for Laura and hopes that this new appraisal system will finally allow her father to respect her.
Eventually, Laura and the Chosen One go to Theatoplis' library and continue studying for Laura's exam. Afterwards, Laura heads to Scott's house and delivers him the first certificate for their new appraisal system. Scott then voices his opinion that Laura should be a professional appraiser instead of a scholar and hopes that they can continue relying on each other as betrothed. After exiting his house, Laura wonders aloud why Scott supports her so much and is glad that the two of them can rely on each other.
Chapter II[]
Some time later, the Chosen One helps Laura to study again when the two are suddenly interrupted by Laura's father. Angrily, Laura's father demands his daughter to tell him if she evaluated a certain jar he's holding. Noticing the jar was the one she evaluated from earlier, Laura answers that she had and was shocked to hear her father say that it was fake. Incredulous, Laura asserts that she did a proper evaluation on the jar to which her father retorts back saying that the Royal Academy of Atlasdam did another evaluation on her certificate and claimed it was fake. Embarrassed by his daughter's official certification alluding to fraud, he demands that Laura return with him back to their mansion and forbids her from taking any exam since he doesn't believe that she's competent enough to take one. Laura begrudgingly accepts the command and waits for her father to leave before suggesting to the Chosen One that they should visit Scott and ask for an explanation of what happened.
Upon arriving at Scott's house, Laura and the Chosen One interrupt a deal between Scott and and interested costumer. Realizing who Laura is, the customer thanks Laura for appraising a jar he's about to buy from Scott to which Laura reveals that she never appraised it. Turning now on Scott, Laura deduces that her fiancé was using her certificate to sell forged jars and keeping all of the profit for himself. Annoyed that his plan had been found out by her, Scott then attempts to bribe his fiancée into silence. After Laura refuses his bribe, Scott brandishes a sword and begins a fight to the death with Laura and the Chosen One. In the process, Laura and the Chosen One end up killing Scott in self-defense.
After the battle, Laura quickly laments how she genuinely wished to support Scott before her father busts into the house and asks Laura if everything's alright. Upon seeing Scott's corpse, Laura's father blames himself over putting Laura in harm's way and tells her that she's once more allowed to take the exam to go on the archaeological team.
Chapter III[]
Before going to her exam, Laura is given a final cheer of good luck and courage from her father and the Chosen One and steps into the testing room to find that her task is to accurately examine a jar. Relying from her past experiences, Laura is able to pass her exam with ease and remarks how Scott ended up supporting her in the end after all. Realizing she has more time before her team sets out for their adventures, Laura obtains the permission of her father and continues traveling with the Chosen One to learn more about the outside world.
