- "When I dance... my heart feels warm. All the bad thoughts in my head disappear. And I'm filled with happiness." —Laila
Laila is a character in Octopath Traveler II. She is an orphan who lives in Sai: East District, and a side character in Agnea's story.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Laila is a girl with wild red hair, wearing a brown skirt and top that leave much of her body exposed.
Personality[]
When first met, Laila is a bitter and antagonistic young woman who constantly makes trouble around town. This is due to her hating her circumstances as an orphan living in a poor neighborhood. However, after meeting Agnea, she becomes much friendlier and happier, thanks to finding a new outlet for her frustrations via dance. Although she makes trouble for her family at times, deep down she cares deeply for them, as shown by her entering dance competitions so she can earn prize money in order to treat them to nice things.
Story[]
At some point in her early life, Laila was abandoned by her parents before she was taken in by Platt and his wife, who ran an orphanage in Sai: East District. Despite being taken in, her abandonment made her bitter, and she was known to be a troublemaker around Sai.
One day, Laila came across a visiting Agnea in Sai who was looking at the statue in the town square. After telling her to step aside, she proceeded to vandalize the statue, much to the visitor's shock. However, she was caught by one of the villagers, Platt, and his wife, prompting her to run off.
Laila later returned to the orphanage to stop Veronica, Dolcinaea's bodyguard, from attempting to use force to evict Platt and the others from the area. Not wanting to cause a scene, Veronica left the orphanage. After an angry outburst about there being no hope in the town, Laila ran off again to the town square where she began to practice the dance she saw earlier. As she did so, Agnea, the same visitor from before appeared and complimented her on her dancing. After taking notice of Laila's tattered shoes and replacing them with a newer pair, the two began to practice dancing together which was witnessed by Platt's wife. Shortly after, the village came under attack by Dolcinaea's group, who were intending to force the villagers out for the construction of a new town in its place.
After Agnea pursued and stopped Dolcinaea and her plans, Laila and the others saw that the statue on the town square had been destroyed by Dolcinaea's entourage. As the townspeople were depressed about the loss of their "hope", Laila ran back to the square, where she and Agnea performed for them, intending to give the people hope through what she learned. Afterwards, she and the others saw Agnea off for her confrontation with Dolcinaea in Merry Hills.
Laila later appeared in Merry Hills to assist Agnea in dispatching a couple of La'mani's men who were pursuing her and during the Grand Gala held at the Temple of the Moon and Sun to support her during the battle with Dolcinaea and witnessed her victory.
Laila's Next Chapter[]
Laila returned to Merry Hills to compete in a dancing competition to help her village with the prize money. Before it was her turn, one of the judges approached and asked her to change into a different pair of shoes as per contest rules, which she reluctantly did. However, when she tried to dance, she suddenly started to slip constantly. Humiliated, she left the competition and was later found sulking on a bridge above the main road. As she lamented on what to do next, she was approached by Hermes, one of the other competitors, who was concerned about her after what happened on stage.
Laila and Hermes then realized that the shoes she was issued secreted oil, which caused the wearer to slip around. Both of them decided to go back to the theater, where they discovered the same judge that gave Laila the trick shoes and Hermes' manager together, both having conspired to sabotage the other competitors together to ensure Hermes' victory, much to the anger of both dancers. After the manager was fired and the judge subdued, Hermes explained the situation and apologized to the other judges, causing her to be disqualified from the competition. However, at Laila's request, both shared the stage together for a wonderful performance, with both dancers winning the competition.
