"I have ruled as warden of the island for many years now, but I will die one day, just like the creature that gave us this meat. When that time comes, Ochette, the island will become your burden to bear." —Juvah

Master Juvah is a character in Octopath Traveler II. He is known as the Warden of the Isle and serves as Ochette's mentor.

As Ochette's master and leader of the Beastlings who live on Toto'haha, Juvah hopes that Ochette will one day become a protector of the island.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Juvah is a large white lion with blue markings on his back. He wears golden braids and bracelets around his forelegs and tail.

Personality[]

As the leader of the Beastlings, Juvah is the wisest of them all. He advises Ochette to trust in her heart more than her eyes or her ears, and claims to have heard a voice in his heart when gazing upon her as a newborn babe, prophesying that she would save the island from destruction. Juvah takes his responsibility as the island's protector seriously, instructing Ochette in the ways of maintaining balance by culling monsters who have grown too powerful. He is also willing to launch himself into battle against monsters that would threaten Beasting Village, even though his strength has begun to wane with age. In spite of his benevolence, Juvah exhibits hostility and suspicion toward the humans, deriding them as driven by greed.

Prior to Story[]

Master Juvah took in a newborn Ochette, as he had heard a premonition regarding her and began to train her as a hunter. One day, during training in the ruins, Juvah presents her with two rare animals, the lājackal Akalā and the malamaowl Mahina, allowing her to pick one as a companion. After Ochette selects and befriends one, the other is immediately consumed by a dark aura, attacking the young hunter before fleeing the ruins.

Chapter 1

Ten years later, Juvah confronts a small group of humans from the neighboring village, who are threatening the beastlings for the land. However, they are forced to retreat when Ochette returns from hunting, provokes one of them, and defeats him.

While eating with Ochette on the western hill, he tells her that she will be his successor as the village's guardian. He also discusses with her the changing nature of the forest that has been happening recently. Suddenly, the two of them are confronted by another group of humans, this time led by Cohazeh, the neighboring village's chief. She extends an apology for the prior incident and offers them some food before requesting help with rescuing a young girl from their village who had gotten lost in the Tombs of the Wardenbeasts. Juvah is reluctant, but Ochette volunteers to go find her despite his reservations.

While Ochette is away, the village suddenly comes under attack by a mysterious monster. Juvah holds off the monster while the villagers evacuate, but is injured during the fight. Ochette soon appears to help, and in spite of Juvah telling her to run, engages the Dark Entity in battle and defeats it.

Before Juvah can take Ochette to the ruins to show her something, Cohazeh thanks them both for slaying the monster and saving the girl, and declares the land feud over for the time being. At the ruins, Juvah shows Ochette the prophecy of the Night of the Scarlet Moon, a calamity that befalls the island once every 400 years. Just before Juvah goes to sleep to recover from his wounds, he taskx Ochette with bringing the three Creatures of Legend back to the island before the calamity starts.

Chapter 3

Some time later, a recovered Juvah rests on the island ledge when Ochette returns to the village. She has succeeded in her mission to bring back the Creatures of Legend, though he takes notice of Cataracta's absence after meeting Tera and Glacis. After being informed of Cateracta's death and her child that is now in Ochette's care, Juvah commends her and asks her to follow him to the Summit of Strife, where the beastlings are preparing for the coming night. There, he tells Ochette more about the Night of the Scarlet Moon and its connection to the Shadow. All of a sudden, Cohazeh shows up at the summit, wanting to discuss land ownership once more, but Juvah dismisses her request and warns her about the approaching calamity. Cohazeh however refuses to believe him, leaving the area with her group, but warning Juvah that she would be back.

Shortly after, the moon turns to a blood red color, signifying the start of the calamity. Shadow mosnters attack the group while Juvah questions Ochette about what she truly fights for, and if she is prepared to face the unknown. Following the defeat of the first two waves, a stray monster attempts to attack Juvah from behind, which Ochette promptly kills. Cohazeh and several of the human villagers unexpectedly reappear once more, angry and distressed as their village has been attacked by shadow monsters. As both village heads argue, another even larger wave of monsters attacks the group from both sides, so they must put off their quarrel for now. Juvah and Ochette head further into the Verdant Wood once the area is cleared and are confronted by a large shadow monster, which is quickly eliminated by Tera. Going further through the woods, they arrive at the Stormy Cape, where Glacis creates an ice bridge for them to cross to the Moonview Cliff. Once there, they face the animal Ochette didn't choose ten years ago, mutated horribly by the shadow. However, none of their attacks work on it, resulting in Ochette being knocked off the cliff by its power.

Along with the others, Juvah rushes to the shore to find that Ochette survived the fall and has been greatly empowered by the First Flame. He watches Ochette confront the Darkling, defeat it and comfort it in its final moments. At last, he witnesses the calamity coming to an end and the dawn drawing near, and decides to make peace with the humans.

During breakfast the following day, Juvah happily supports Ochette's decision to become a protector of the island.

Trivia[]

  • Juvah can be found on the Beastling Village cliff during the day.
  • Juvah shares several similarities with Dromarch from Xenoblade Chronicles II, as both are large white lions with markings on their fur, and both give counsel to a female cat-eared companion.
  • During her time at Beasting Village, Ochette often slept on Juvah's mane.
  • According to her travel banter, Ochette once let fly an arrow that sheared off part of Juvah's mane. She suspects this incident is what led him to teach her proper speech as a means of better communication.
  • During the Epilogue, Giselle can be seen attempting to recruit Juvah into her troupe.
