- "Unleashing everything... Shatter all boundaries... Light and dark... Life and death... Good and evil... All that has been divided shall return to chaos. Everything remains as it was... All life shall return to the Beast of Chaos... I am the Eye of Calamity... I am the Divine Beast of Chaos... Let all things become one." —Jurmung
The Divine Beast of Chaos Jurmung, also known as the "Eye of Calamity," is a divine beast in Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. It is the source of the Accursed Halo and the main antagonist in the Emberflame Story.

Story[]
The divine beast seeking the duality's destruction, yearning for everything returning to the primordial chaos. When Galdera declared the war to the 12 gods, Jurmung sided with the dark god. Galdera used its power, the Accursed Halo, to trap the humans in their negative feelings, strengthening himself and his flames. Through the sacrifice of the divine beasts who sided with the gods, Jurmung's soul was split in two and sealed in different places, weakening the Halo and the thirteenth god, allowing the twelve gods to finally triumph over him and sealing him in Hell, beyond the Gate of Finis.
Jurmung's power and soul were divided and sealed in two places: the Labyrinthine Isle and the Accursed Swamp. The swamp was originally located in the Isle, but it was sealed within the Labyrinthine Woods to further prevent the Eye of Calamity's power could become one. The knowledge of these places was recorded in the Codex of Doom, a manuscript would be passed down among the Witches of Salvation from generation to generation, until it reached Amaranthia. As a sign of disrespect for tradition, since the witch did not want to pass her memories and knowledge to the next Witch, Amaranthia gave the manuscript to Mattias, who would later devise a plan to free and strengthen the divine beast as a prelude to the Fallen's resurrection.
Emberflame Story[]
Mattias and Esmeralda, likely with the Codex's knowledge, were in possession of Kulshedra's arcanastones, whose purpose lies in its sacrifice: the more iterations are brought down, the stronger Jurmung and its Accursed Halo will become, becoming a keystone in the merchant's scheme of releasing the beast at its full power.
Esmeralda is sent to the Labyrinthine Isle and, after summoning Kulshedra several times, Jurmung is partially resurrected. Upon its awakening, the beast is seen enraged and cursing the divine beasts, because, as the beast yearns for everything to become one as to primordial chaos, its existence was divided into two, which it finds as the greatest humiliation ever. Claiming it will break all boundaries so everything could become one like before the beginning of time, it leaves the Isle to look for its other part, whose place was being unsealed by Mattias, to become whole once again.
Even after stopping Mattias and confiscating his Codex, the Divine Beast of Chaos managed to reach the swamp. When the party went after it, the beast has recovered its power. Appearing before the party, it repeats its desire to break all boundaries between opposite forces. While cursing the divines and the man for dividing the unity and bringing the concept of duality, it claims such audacity won't go unpunished before attacking the party.
In the intensity of the battle, Jurmung tells, despite how formidable they may be, the children of men are a finite existence. When the Eye of Calamity remarks the meaning behind its two heads, Ditraina realizes Jurmung is an existence between boundaries -neither alive, neither dead-, so its something it can't be brought down by force. The only way is to seal it once again. Jurmung brushes it off, telling them there's no way humans can seal a divine beast. But as it speaks about its intentions to bring death to the twin worlds, Isla and the Cait Sages appear on the scene. The Chosen One summons the six arcanastones to empower the Cait Sages and they begin the sealing ritual, much to Jurmung's annoyance. But even after putting up some resistance, the Eye of Calamity is successfully sealed once again, thus ending the Accursed Halo's phenomenon.

Etymology[]
Jurmung (ユルムング) may be misspelling of Jörmungandr (ヨルムンガンド), or a mix of Jörmungandr and Jurlungur (ユルング), both serpentine beasts from Nordic and Australian mythologies, respectively. As the rainbow serpent rains life over the world, the nordic serpent brings its end, which may reinforce Jurmung's dualistic nature, as the beast itself claims the dual heads represent life and death, and how both concepts are sides of the same coin.
Trivia[]
- Although the game doesn't confirm it, it's likely Jurmung was the beast watching over the snakes. Besides being a beast with two black-scaled serpents' heads, the Isle in which it was sealed is brimming with unique snake enemies.
- The Eye of Calamity, a rare accessory in Octopath Traveler II, may be named after Jurmung.
