Jin Mei is a character in Octopath Traveler II, appearing in several cutscenes during Hikari's Chapter 4. He is a member of Clan Mei and Rai Mei's brother.

Jin Mei has short brown hair and wears brown-and-blue armor. Unlike most members of Clan Mei, who specialize in spears, Jin Mei prefers to fight with a sword.
Personality[]
In the brief time that he appears, Jin Mei proves his mettle as a skillful fighter and idealist. He believes that his clan's alliance with Ku will lead to strong fellowship, forging a vision of peace. Jin prefers to let one's sword to the talking, as he isn't once for mincing words. He frequently trains young Hikari in the art of swordplay, teaching him to value technique over strength, but his loyalty to Clan Ku is such that he follows Mugen's orders over his own conscience, ultimately surrendering himself to execution to protect his clan.

After his clan swore fealty to Ku, Jin Mei trained the young prince Hikari to wield a blade. From him, Hikari learned the skill Hachimonjigiri.
When Clan Ku went to war against its rivals, Clan Mei was called upon to fight. Jin Mei bid Hikari farewell and warned him to watch out for thieves in the commoners' district, only to orchestrate a secret attempt on Hikari's life at Mugen's behest. The bandits that Jin hired killed Hikari's mother Kura, triggering the boy's cursed blood to manifest into bloodthirsty "Hikari." When Jin arrived on the scene, he found all of the bandits dead and Hikari possessed by his power.
Warning Rai Mei to stay back, Jin Mei confessed his part in the blood and subdued "Hikari." He later returned to Mugen, accepting full responsibility for his failure to assassinate the prince. Mugen executed him as punishment, but fulfilled Jin's wish of sparing the rest of Clan Mei.

Etymology[]
"Jin" is a name of Chinese origin (Jīn, 金), meaning "gold." "Jin" is also the Japanese pronunciation of the character 仁, which means “benevolence” as represented by Confucian ideals. Jin's name likely reflects his high status and his desire to do right by his clan.
Jin's surname, "Mei," is of Chinese and Japanese origin and means "plum tree."
