Etymology[]
"Jan" is a form of the name "John," meaning "God is gracious." The name likely represents Jan's willingness to hope for Primrose's happiness despite the ordeal that has since come between them.
Jan's surname "Forsythe" is a name of Irish and Scottish origin, meaning "man of peace."
Trivia[]
- Despite being Primrose’s childhood friend, Jan doesn’t appear until the very end of her story. That said, if the player talks to Anna during Primrose’s Chapter 3, she talks about Jan and Primrose’s friendship and how it made her feel like she’d gained a daughter.
- Jan’s Inquire/Scrutinize information heavily implies that he is in love with Primrose, as it says “he wishes for her happiness from the bottom of his heart." At the end of Primrose’s story when she resolves to find a new cause to live for after avenging her father’s murder, she and Jan also meet each other’s gaze and both stop in their tracks. However, it is left ambiguous if the two become a couple.
- Jan's dialogue contains a typo: "I only hope she found happiness after that terrible ideal." ("Ideal" should presumably be replaced with "ordeal").
- Concept art reveals that Ombre, Simeon's actor proxy in Primrose's Chapter 4, was originally going to look like Jan. In concept art, Jan's and Ombre's sprites are identical, apart from the color of their hair (Ombre's being dark brown rather than black). [1]
