- "Don't forget to keep up with your own diary, you hear? Life is long and full of many challenges. Your heart and mind will change along the way. When you are feeling lost, remembering who you were before will help you understand who you need to be now." —In Grandport Markets
Ing the Diarist is a townsperson in Octopath Traveler.
Story[]
12 years prior to the events of Octopath Traveler, Ing donated a diary to Graham Crossford. Crossford would write records of his travels across the continent in this diary, and it would end up in the hands of Tressa Colzione.
Toward to the end of Tressa's Chapter 4, Ing walks up to the young merchant and reveals the name of the man to whom he gave his diary.

Etymology[]
"Ing" is a name derived from Ancient Norse, most likely meaning "ancestor." Ing is also a variant name of the Norse god Freyr, who was associated with fertility, fair weather, and a good harvest. Ing the Diarist's name likely reflects the wisdom of his years, as well as his optimistic attitude toward navigating life.
Trivia[]
- Ing has an easily missable cutscene in Tressa's Chapter 4. When proceeding into the Grandport Market, if the player heads right instead of left toward the story objective, they will be drawn into a short speech by Ing (who is simply titled "Diarist"). After this brief, unvoiced cutscene, the Diarist can be spoken to like a regular NPC, repeating all of his previous lines. If Challenged at this point, his name appears as "Ing the Diarist."
- Ing's dialogue mentions that he gave his journal to Graham Crossford "a good ten years ago," in contradiction with the official timeline (which says that this took place 12 years ago).
