Hunter is a recurring job.

Game Sub-Pages:
Octopath Traveler Champions of the Continent Octopath Traveler II

Hunter is a starting job in Octopath Traveler. It is H'aanit's primary job.

Hunters are versed in the use of Bows and Axes and are primarily physical attackers, with a single Lightning spell and a low number of useful supportive skills. Leghold Trap in particular is widely considered among the best debuff moves in the entire game, while Take Aim has the unique power of applying the Increased Critical and Increased Accuracy buffs, and to all allies simultaneously at that.

More than most other jobs, Hunters have a specialty in multi-attack skills such as Rain of Arrows, its upgraded counterpart Arrowstorm, the AoE Divine Skill Draefendi's Rage, and their second support skill, Second Serving. Hunters can be equipped with the Double Tomahawk to quickly break foes' shields with both available weapons.

All four Hunter support skills assist their physically aggressive playstyle, either by increasing the Critical stat (Eagle Eye) or giving more ways to attack (Heighten Senses, Second Serving and Patience). Patience—the Hunter's fourth support skill—in particular is widely considered among the best support skills in the entire game.

Mercy Strike 4 Attack a single foe with a bow. Otherwise lethal attacks will instead leave the target with 1 HP
Arrowstorm 24 Attack all foes 5 to 8 times with a bow.
Take Aim 8 Increase all allies' critical rate and accuracy for 2 turns.
Draefendi's Rage 30 [Divine Skill] Unleash a highly powerful bow attack on all foes.

Strategies[]

The Hunter secondary job is unlocked at the Shrine of the Huntress. With its focus on physical offense aided by multi-attack skills and the ability to delay foes' actions with Leghold Trap, the Hunter job can be recommended to physical-oriented characters, especially those whose primary job also has supportive skills.

  • Therion is one of the best choices for the Hunter job. First, Hunter Therion has six different means of coverage: Daggers, Swords, Axes, Bows, Fire (Wildfire), and Lightning Thunderbird. Second, while Therion is tied with Alfyn and H'aanit for the second-lowest Elem. Atk. of the eight protagonists after Olberic, the Hunter secondary job provides stat bonuses to several stats that are either the highest or among the highest for Therion: +8% Phys. Atk., +6% Accuracy, +5% Speed, +6% Critical and +5% Evasion. Third, Leghold Trap complements the Thief job's (i.e. Therion's primary job) two debuffing skills, Shackle Foe and Armor Corrosive. Hunter Therion is able to apply the Decreased Physical Attack, Decreased Physical Defense and Leghold Trap debuffs, and the Thief job's fourth support skill, Insult to Injury, increases the duration of debuffs (and ailments) the equipping user inflicts by +1 turn.
  • Olberic is tied with H'aanit (whose primary job is already Hunter) for the highest Phys. Atk. of the eight protagonists as well as tied for the second-highest Accuracy and Critical (H'aanit has the highest). Hunter Olberic gains access to Bows, Axes and Lightning magic in addition to his primary Warrior job's Swords and Polearms, giving him five different means of coverage. Both the Warrior and Hunter jobs' second support skills, Summon Strength and Eagle Eye respectively, further complement Olberic's physical-oriented playstyle. Unlike Warrior H'aanit, who has low Phys. Def. and mediocre HP, and therefore struggles to use Incite, Hunter Olberic has very high Phys. Def. and HP, and can therefore make good use of Incite's intercepting capabilities while delaying foes with Leghold Trap. However, keep in mind that Olberic's primary Warrior job has Spearhead among its skills, which can be rendered redundant by Leghold Trap; also, Olberic has the lowest Elem. Atk. of the eight protagonists, so the Hunter skill Thunderbird is best used for breaking.
  • Tressa can have a niche Hunter role because Leghold Trap can work in conjunction with the supportive skills of her primary Merchant job: Rest, Sidestep and especially Donate BP. Tressa is also tied with Alfyn and Therion for the second-highest Phys. Atk. of the eight protagonists after Olberic/H'aanit (tied), and Thunderbird is essentially the Lightning equivalent to the Merchant skill Tradewinds. However, Hunter Tressa's weapon variety is compromised because both the Merchant and Hunter jobs wield Bows, and Tressa is tied for the lowest Accuracy of the eight protagonists which diminishes her physical damage-dealing capabilities; so it might be a better idea to have Tressa fight alongside a Hunter, instead.
  • As far as support skills go, besides the staple Saving Grace, recommended support skills for Hunters include: SP Saver, Summon Strength (early-game), Surpassing Power (late-game), Eye for an Eye, Incidental Attack, Insult to Injury, Eagle Eye (early-game), Second Serving, Patience, BP Eater, Stronger Strikes, Fortitude and Physical Prowess.
  • As far as weapons go, the Double Tomahawk, Lizardking's Axe. and Battle-tested Axe are all good Axe weapons for Hunters; the former lets the user attack twice in a single action for every Standard Attack, while the latter two increase the power of the user's Lightning spells, with the last one also increasing Ice spells (both Hunters and Apothecaries have a single Lightning and Ice skill Icicle between them). For Bows, the Hyperion Bow and Battle-tested Bow give the highest increases to the equipping character's Accuracy and Critical stats respectively.

Trivia[]

  • As revealed by the Rite of Passage sidequest, fledgling hunters must bring down a wild boar to prove their skills. Bringing home a tusk is deemed sufficient proof of one's passage.
  • The Japanese novel The Four Paths of Eight Travelers reveals that Thunderbird is a spell passed down among the hunters of S'warkii.
