Hell (辺獄, Hengoku) is Orsterra's realm of the dead counterpart, where regretful and resentful souls wander free, as well as the world where the most of Bestower of All chapters take place.
The hellish realm is a layered structure, with places like Cragspear and Valore being close to the realm of the living, so it's possible to create a gate and access them by using the power of the Accurst Flame. The deepest places can only be reached through the Gate of Finis.[1]
As the name suggests, hell is not a place fit for the living. The fate of those who go to the etheric plane without adequate preparations is unknown, but it's specified that their sanity is affected.[1] The only way for a human to go through the realm without being influenced by the environment is through the protection of the gods/divine rings: The Ringbearer Chosen and the Guardians of Light can move freely thanks to the Ring of the Flamebringer; Sazantos summons a black armor out of the corrupted Rings/Finis power before entering the Gate. Rinyuu suggests she can stand the plane's influence due to the divine properties of the Crossford bloodline.[2]
Due to its metaphysical properties, strong souls can even warp the surroundings to their will, achieving feats that wouldn't be possible in the world above, like stopping time upon certain place or shaping the environment to their liking.
History[]
This realm is first mentioned in the infamous tome From the Far Reaches of Hell written by Salomon.
Bestower of All[]
The Dark Knight and the Dark Priestess use the black flame powers to create rifts to this realm, to bind the rancor of the dead and using them as barrier and control the souls of former allies to frustrate the Chosen One progress.

Trivia[]
- Before its appearance in Champions of the Continent, Mattias describes hell as a realm of blackness "darker than a thousand starless nights" in his diary in the Gate of Finis.
- Despite its name, Orsterra's hell seems more like a purgatory than a place of eternal torment. In the Japanese version, this realm is appropriately called "Limbo."
- Hell as a place of eternal fire (地獄, Jigoku) seems to be a concept in Orsterra and Solistia, given the use of terms such as "hellsfire" (地獄の火炎, Jigoku no Kaen) and it being used to curse others ("Go to hell... There's your answer" (答えは “地獄へ落ちろ”だ, Kotaeha “Jigoku e Ochiro” da)). It's unknown if this fiery hell truly exists as part of this metaphysical realm, but in case of being acknowledged as such, it would be as a layer behind the Gate of Finis, probably close to Galdera's.
- In the localized Octopath Traveler, Orsterrans refer to "hells" in the plural, which may suggest that they conceive of multiple hells or regions of hell. This is a creative take used to convey emotion, since there is no reference to multiple hells in the Japanese version. In the English, "hells" acts as a localization for angry or shocked expressions ("Huh? Who in the hells're you!?" (だ、誰だ!?, Da, dareda?) and vice versa.
- As a realm unfit for the living, allies from the living world can't be summoned in this world and its regions. Meanwhile dead allies can be recruited from here and can be summoned both here and Orsterra.
- The soundtrack "Hell - Battle" plays for all random hellfiends (excepting Cait) encounters.
- Upon the introduction of Day/Night mechanic in Side Solistia, Hell's time is set to Night.
- The concept for Hell was a realm like a deep sea ecosystem, where no light reaches but living things exist.[3]
