- "Humans and beasts are made to hate and kill each other." —To Ochette
Heig is a character in Octopath Traveler II. He is a hunter from Stormhail, and a primary character in Ochette's Chapter 2: Glacis route.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Heig wears a navy blue parka and has greying hair and a beard, the former of which is tied into a ponytail. He wields a bow in combat.
Personality[]
Heig is cynical and embittered from the trauma he suffered from attempting to hunt Glacis, an endeavor that resulted in everyone else in his original hunting party being killed. He claims that humans and beasts are made to hate each other, and that reasons for killing don't make a difference when the deed is actually done. He also seems to harbor suicidal thoughts, such as when he tried to hunt Glacis again after finding and burying the last of his old party, despite being much older and not having any backup. After Ochette helps him move past his regret, he slowly begins to find reason to live again.
Story[]
(I don't think this is where I should be going at the moment...) The following section contains potential story spoilers! |
In his youth, Heig got caught in a furious blizzard and nearly died, but the blizzard miraculously cleared. A longtime hunter around Stormhail, he now makes a living by accompanying hunters from other regions.
Heig first appears after Ochette arrives at Stormhail. After a failed attempt to clear a shortcut through the peaks of Altahe results in a small avalanche, Heig comes to investigate and meets Ochette. He tells her to leave the mountain before she gets hurt, claiming that this place "snows with hate."
Ochette encounters Heig again on the mountain, where he is talking to a long-frozen corpse. He reveals that it is his nephew, who used to hunt with him. He and his crew came up with the idea to hunt Glacis, with hopes that bringing her down would give them untold glory. However, the hunt went horribly wrong, and only Heig escaped with his life. Since that day, he has been returning to the peaks to find his old party members and give them proper burials. With his nephew found, his entire party has been laid to rest. This purpose having been fulfilled, Heig decides to make one final effort to hunt down Glacis, and makes for the peak.
At the peak, Ochette finds Heig injured by Glacis. When she spots Glacis' broken egg, Heig explains that his party destroyed the egg, the logic being that if they couldn't bring down Glacis, they would at least bring something of her's down with them. Ochette openly condemns Heig's actions, but before she can say anything else, she is forced to calm down Glacis.
After subduing Glacis, Heig is shocked to find her able to soothe the enraged beast. With Glacis no longer vengeful, he believes that he has no reason to live any more, and decides to stay atop the peak to freeze to death. However, Ochette refuses to leave him behind and drags him back down the mountain, much to his protests.
Back at his home, Heig opens up about his past actions and the regret tied to them. He reveals that the idea to hunt Glacis was given to him by the Dark Hunter, though he also admits that it was his fault for not stopping her due to being swept up by the prospects of glory. After he opens up, Ochette decides to befriend the old hunter and offers him some jerky.

Etymology[]
"Heig" is a topographic name derived from the Middle High German word "heide," meaning "heath" or "moor." Heig's name may also be related to the Old English name "Haig," which means "enclosed with hedges." Both meanings symbolize his rugged character and his hunter's association with nature.
Trivia[]
- Travel banter with Castti during the chapter shows that Heig couldn't stop blushing while she was treating his wounds, suggesting that he finds her attractive.
- Additional travel banter reveals that Heig gave Partitio a sample of the local booze, which Partitio and Ochette then proceed to drink together.
- Heig's miraculous rescue from a blizzard may Glacis's doing, just as Tera once saved Pom's life.
- The Epilogue reveals that Heig has visited New Delsta previously, though he's never seen the city as busy as during Agnea's performance.
