- "If thou wouldst callen thyself the Flamebearer… Thou must proven thyself worthy!" —Guardian of the First Flame, testing Ophilia in battle
The Guardian of the First Flame is an enemy in Octopath Traveler. It is the boss in Chapter 1 of Ophilia's story, guarding Aelfric's Lanthorn in the Cave of Origin.
Appearance[]
Similar to the game's Revenant enemies, the Guardian of the First Flame is a towering golem made out of crystallized rock. It carries a large sword in its right hand and a large shield in its left hand, with its huge main torso being supported by a small lower body.
Story[]
The Guardian of the First Flame is an ancient remnant who dwells in the heart of the Cave of Origin, protecting the First Flame in Aelfric's Lanthorn. In order for a Flamebearer to take up the Lanthorn, the guardian must be defeated in a test of battle, which Ophilia undertakes as she sets out to perform the Kindling in Lianna's stead.
Battle[]
At 50% health, the Guardian of the First Flame can summon up to 3 Dark Wisps.
- Attack: Physical attack, single target.
- Sweep: Physical attack, targets entire party.
- Pyre: damage to a single target.
- The Sacred Flame gains in strength...!:The Guardian enters Boost mode and will use Flame of the Heavens next turn unless its shields are broken beforehand.
- The Trial Begins / Prove your strength to the guardian!: Summons up to 3 Dark Wisps (depending on how many party members have been brought to battle). The Guardian of the First Flame will wait a minimum of 1 turn before summoning more.
After reaching 50% Max. HP, the Guardian of the First Flame can summon Dark Wisps to aid it.
Each wisp will not attack directly, instead, each will slowly count down from 3. The counter is independent to each wisp.
Once the timer runs out, the wisp will use Self-immolation:
- Self-immolation: Large physical damage to entire party.
Quotes[]
- "Of thee who dost treaden in these halls, I aske.
Art thou fit to lighten the flames and showen the path to all humanity?" —To Ophilia

Trivia[]
- If the Guardian of the First Flame is faced with two heroes, then its Elemental Attack will actually be lower than if it was battled with Ophilia alone.
- The Guardian of the First Flame speaks in the same archaic dialect as H'aanit.
- The Guardian's dialogue echoes that of the four optional shrine bosses: "If thou wouldst callen thyself Flamebearer... Thou must proven thyself worthy!"
- It's unknown if this guardian is a purified version of the one fought in the same place in Champions of the Continent, prior to the events of Octopath Traveler, or if the Guardian of the First Flame is a different remnant who took the role after the corrupted guardian's defeat.
- If Ophilia felled the Hróðvitnir, this makes the Guardian of the Sacred Flame the only boss in Ophilia's route that is not deceased come the end of Ophilia's story.
- If so, it would share this trait with Russell from Cyrus Albright's Chapter 1, who similarly is the only boss of his route who is left alive by the conclusion of Cyrus's route.
