"This village has been beset by calamity and plague. Most of our youngest and brightest are no longer with us." —Villager

Gravell is a town in Octopath Traveler II. This small Wildlands village is the location for Osvald's final story chapter.

Located near the Duskruin Shrine, Gravell has fallen prey to a series of misfortunes. Its populace has been ravaged by plague and devastating accidents, apparently caused triggered by a team of researchers investigating the neighboring ruins.

The blacksmith Porta lives in a house in the center of the village, where he plies his trade in debt. As a descendant of a long line of ancient blacksmiths, Porta has inherited his family's long-guarded secret to reforging the divine weapons of the storied Armsmasters. When interacted with, he will refurbish any rusty weapons that the player brings him and grant the Armsmaster job.

Etymology[]

"Gravell" is a variant spelling of "gravel," referring to a loose collection of small stones worn by water or pounded down. The name may therefore refer to the small collection of townspeople who make up the dwindling village, themselves beaten and worn down by the plague and misfortune that has overcome their home. Gravel is also known for its rough, gritty texture, which reflects the tough history of the town.

Trivia[]

  • Travelers are regarded as a "strange sight" in Gravell, implying that outsiders rarely visit the village.
  • Gravell's townspeople praise the local cheese, which is made from goat milk.
  • Gravell's provisoner shop is run by widows. It also contains a coat rack that features a hat identical to Partitio's.
  • A cat can be found sitting on some barrels in the village.
  • Eleven candles can be found on the ground on the eastern side of the village, one ring of eight and one group of three. Three more candles can be seen beyond the road to the east, totaling fourteen in all.
  • Among Gravell's townspeople is a scholar who has come to the village to compose her latest work, "On the Spate of Misfortunes in the Land where the Archmage's Corpse rests."
  • One of Gravell's townspeople is a woman who hunts monsters around the village by day, having left her old life as a mercenary in a far-flung land to protect her vulnerable home.
  • The caption on the screenshot of Gravell in development translates roughly, "We are seeing a creation myth. It is Wildlands Town 3 from 800 years ago. A great sorcerer performs a dark ritual, inviting darkness onto the world." This caption suggests that a cutscene featuring D'arqest was originally planned to appear in Gravell as part of the story; curiously enough, the cutscene is labeled as a Temenos cutscene, rather than Osvald's.
  • In the town during the day, there is a child NPC that has the item "STuFfeD ToY" which cannot be stolen or bought, and he disappears at night. However, he is linked to an event if one waits outside Gravell for a few minutes at night until first light, where he will appear outside, allowing the player to Coerce him, entering battle with a dark elemental monster with 15 shield points designated "Shadowy Boy." Defeating him causes him to disappear from the area and unlocks a nearby Hidden Item: the Sunshadow Staff.
    • This is the only child NPC in the series that can be coerced/battled due to the nature of said battle.
    • The child's original backstory reads: "A young boy afraid of almost anything. He asks his STuFfeD ToY for help on nights when he cannot sleep, and in return the StuFfeD ToY devours his soul so the fear cannot seize it. This is a secret between the two of them." His age is also marked at 6.
    • Once Coerced, the child's backstory changes to: "Death. Evil. Loathing. Resentment. Murder. Misfortune. Curses. Hell. Morals. Fools. Tyrants. Criminals. Secrecy. Bandits. Cowards. Wickedness. Poison. Famine. Plague. Earthquakes. Calamity. Monstrosities. Humans. Disaster. Eternity. Time. Minds. Origins. Lies. Darkness. Purity. Life. Fear has many names." His age is marked at 8.
  • The head of the Clerics' Guild in Borderfall hints at the secret of the Sunshadow Staff. When asked about a secret weapon, she mentions a tale that she heard often growing up in Gravell: a Wildlands myth that tells of a mysterious weapon created by sealing away a certain evil entity, transforming it into a staff. According to the myth, this entity delights in the darkness found in children's hearts and can take hold of them, causing possessed children to wander nearby at dawn. If someone can coerce the darkness from their heart, the entity will be sealed into the form of a staff free from its evil influence.
