Gaston is a character in Octopath Traveler and the first boss of Olberic's story. He is the leader of the brigands that kidnap Philip from the town of Cobbleston

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Gaston has brown hair and wears a fur cloak, rugged leather clothing, and a horned helmet. In battle, he wields the sword of Erhardt. He is also very muscular, likely due to his past work as a mercenary.

Personality[]

Gaston embraces banditry as a legitimate form of work, saying "Times are lean, and a man's got to make a living." Despite being ready and able to use his sword for a less than noble cause, he is a very honest man that never wanted to do harm to others, but felt he needed to do so as there was no other recourse. He cares much for his fellow bandits who have come to accept him as their boss.

Gaston is first seen in the Brigands' Den with his group and a recently captured Phillip. As he complimented the boy's courage against his men and offered him a place in his group, Olberic (going by the alias "Berg") appears and challenges Gaston, but not before recognizing the sword he carried, as it once belonged to Erhardt. After an intense battle, he is defeated, but before he and his men were taken to the gaol, he deduced Olberic's true identity and told him where to find Gustav, who knew where Erhardt was located.

Upon completing Olberic's story, Gaston can be found in Cobbleston, where he has sworn to become the town's new protector in Olberic's place.

Relationships[]

Erhardt[]

Gaston was trained by Gustav in the ways of the sword during their affiliation with the Black Brotherhood. Gustav being trained directly by Erhardt.

Gustav[]

Similar to the relationship between Erhardt and Olberic, Gustav and Gaston were comrades in arms during the war on Hornburg, both trained by Erhardt. Though not much is known about the extent of their friendship, they are close enough to keep up with each other from time to time, given Gaston's knowledge of Gustav's alias of The Black Knight.

Edit Tab

Gaston will begin battle with 2 Brigands at his side.

Gaston has very high physical strength, and as expected, most of his moves take advantage of this strength, making him the biggest threat of all the Chapter 1 bosses when it comes to one-shot potential. If Gaston is one of the first bosses you take on, it is recommended to make use of Olberic's Bolster Defense talent.

  • Attack: Physical damage, single target.
  • Level Slash: Physical damage, targets entire party.
  • Bludgeon: Physical damage, single target. Chance to inflict Status Unconsciousness Unconsciousness.
  • Gaston grins and whirls his blade...: Gaston enters boost mode for 1 turn. Uses Mighty Blow if not broken before Gaston's next action.
    • Mighty Blow: Heavy physical damage, single target.

Edit Tab

  • Attack - Standard physical attack. Hits single target once.
  • Thrash - Physical attack. Hits entire party once.

Trivia[]

  • Gaston is one of two bosses featured in the Project Octopath Traveler Demo, the other being Helgenish.
  • Gaston's concept art is rougher than that of most of the game's bosses, on account of his sketch dating back from the very early stages of Octopath Traveler. Because they were still feeling out what this world would end up looking like, the developers designed him with parts that wouldn't been seen in the sprite work. [1]
