Gaston is a character in Octopath Traveler and the first boss of Olberic's story. He is the leader of the brigands that kidnap Philip from the town of Cobbleston.
Profile
Appearance
Gaston takes the appearance of a general portrayal of Vikings in other fictional games, having a horned helmet [though real vikings didn't have horns on their helmets], a fur cape, and very rugged leather clothing. He is also very "buff", likely due to his past work as a mercenary.
Personality
Gaston embraces banditry as a legitimate form of work, saying "Times are lean, and a man's got to make a living." Despite being ready and able to use his sword for a less than noble cause, he is a very honest man that never wanted to do harm to others, but felt he needed to do so as there was no other recourse. He cares much for his fellow bandits who have come to accept him as their boss.
Story
Gaston is first seen in the Brigands' Den with his group and a recently captured Phillip. As he complimented the boy's courage against his men and offered him a place in his group, Olberic (going by the alias "Berg") appears and challenges Gaston, but not before recognizing the sword he carried, as it once belonged to Erhardt. After an intense battle, he is defeated, but before he and his men were taken to the gaol, he deduced Olberic's true identity and told him where to find Gustav, who knew where Erhardt was located.
Upon completing Olberic's story, Gaston can be found in Cobbleston, where he has sworn to become the town's new protector in Olberic's place.
Relationships
Erhardt
Gaston was trained by Erhardt in the ways of the sword during their affiliation with the Black Brotherhood.
Gustav
Similar to the relationship between Erhardt and Olberic, Gustav and Gaston were comrades in arms during the war on Hornburg, both trained by Erhardt. Though not much is known about the extent of their friendship, they are close enough to keep up with each other from time to time, given Gaston's knowledge of Gustav's alias of The Black Knight.
Battle
Gaston has very high physical strength, and as expected, most of his moves take advantage of this strength, making him the biggest threat of all the chapter 1 bosses when it comes to 1 shot potential. If Gaston is one of the first bosses you take on, it is recommended to make use of Olberic's Bolster Defense skill.
- Level Slash: Physical damage to entire party.
- Bludgeon: Physical damage, single target. Chance to inflict Unconsciousness.
- Gaston Grins and Whirls His Blade: Uses Mighty Blow next action if not broken.
- Mighty Blow: Very heavy physical damage, single target.
