- "So come... let us consume all life on this world... let us consume the gods themselves... For now and eternity... there is only us... There is only Galdera!" —Before battle
Galdera is a recurrent character in Octopath Traveler series. The 13th of the gods of Orsterra, he is known as the ruler of life and death, lord of infernal magic, and the god of the Accurst Flame.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Galdera is a gargantuan, black-armored behemoth composed of the corpses of the Undead. Although his upper half is vaguely human in shape, his lower half tapers into a skeletal spine conjoined with a fusion of tormented souls and his Omniscient Eye, while his left hand juts into the eyed Blade of the Fallen. Bones and dripping flesh protrude from his body. His mask sports curving white horns, his mouth bristles with fangs, and his eyes glow red.
Prior to his rebellion, Galdera was presumably human in form like his divine siblings, but any remnants of such a body have been corrupted.
Personality[]
Galdera describes himself as a being born of bottomless greed and darkness. He believes himself to be the only perfect and all-powerful entity, and therefore seeks to consume and assimilate all life into himself—including humanity and the other gods—so that he will become the only eternal being.
Story[]
- "The thirteenth child and baby of the family, Galdera has no particular talent like his older siblings, but more ambition than all of them put together. His mother hopes that his heart, at least, will keep him on the right path." —Trial of Truth inquiry in Champions of the Continent
After his birth, Galdera burned his mother Orsa to death with his black flames and fled from the Heavens. In his desire to seize all creation for himself, he clashed with his brethren in a fierce war that engulfed the world. He harnessed the power of the Eye of Calamity, the only known divine beast that allied itself with him, plunging the world into darkness and strengthening his dark flames. When the divine beast was sealed, his power diminished, and his flames were repelled by Aelfric's Sacred Flame. Galdera was then sealed in a layer of Hell, beyond the Gate of Finis.
Should Galdera be freed, his vengeance on the gods and people of Orsterra would be terrible. Artifacts such as the tome From the Far Reaches of Hell and the mural in the Ruins of Eld were left as warnings of what destructive powers lie behind the Gate.
Orsterra[]
217 years before the events of Octopath Traveler, Galdera's flames took form and became Lyblac, his daughter and faithful apostle. She descended into Orsterra when Salomon opened the Gate of Finis to fulfill her father's will in the land of the living. Her preparations for Galdera's return caused most of the events of Octopath Traveler and Champions of the Continent, culminating when she lured Kit Crossford to the Underworld as Galdera's vessel.
In the Forbidden Temple, there is a statue depicting the fallen god. It is unknown if it was built at the time Jennish ordered the temple's construction or if was later.
Champions of the Continent: Side Orsterra[]
In Bestower of Fame, several members of the Black Scarlets sacrifice themselves to activate it in order to hinder the Chosen One and the Knights Ardante so Ceraphina can perform the Accursed Night ritual.
Octopath Traveler 0[]
When the Ringbearer illuminates Sazantos using the Flamebearer's Ring, Sazantos breaks free of Orsa and is exorcised from his bottomless darkness, but Galdera manifests from Sazantos's darkness and began assimilating with Orsa. Thus begins the battle with Or'galdera.
Octopath Traveler[]
After absorbing Kit, Galdera fused Lyblac into his body and waged bitter battle against the eight travelers. After a savage clash, the travelers defeated Galdera, sealing him away in the Underworld and releasing Kit.
Solistia[]
Champions of the Continent: Side Solistia[]
As with Lyblac in Orsterra, Galdera's flames took form in Solistia and became Lucian, Galdera's son and faithful apostle. When the Gate of Finis opened in Orsterra, it also opened in Solistia, allowing Lucian to descend into the world of the living. Like his Orsterran counterpart, Lucian would seek to manifest Galdera through a worthy vessel and to connect the twin worlds for him through Ouma. Galdera's essence would be crafted onto the Ring of the Fallen and entrusted to his Solistian servant.
Known as the Great Will or the Dark Will, Galdera is the unknown god worshiped by the Order of Blood, who—led by Lucian under the premise of a humanity without conflict—seek his guidance and resurrection.
Some time before the current events, the ring, under the guise of the Ring of the Flamebringer, would be indirectly bestowed upon his Chosen One: a potential vessel.
The Chosen One[]
Galdera is the voice who whispers and urges Sail to collect the "eight fragments" and connect the Dark Truth between the two worlds.
When Sail is broken by Lucian's revelation, the ring reveals his identity as the Fallen, telling the young man to submit both his body and soul. Feeling that there was no point in fighting further, Sail succumbs to his fate, and Lucian uses the Codex of Ouma to resume the ritual, summoning a gigantic tower of flesh and bones above upon Holden. Through it the Dark God would slowly take control of his vessel, encased in a "cocoon" on the upper floors.
While the Chosen One and Mydia are fighting Lucian, Avar appears on the upper floors, attacking the cocoon and forcing Sail the Fallen to prematurely emerge. The two eventually clash, but the vessel easily overpowers the rebel. The Chosen One and the Sanctum Knight reach the top of the tower, only to find a badly injured Avar, who dies immediately after a counterattack from the Fallen. Mydia tries to talk sense into Sail, but her words don't reach him, forcing the party to fight. At one point, Sail regains lucidity, but the Ring of the Fallen begins to glow. Taking control of his vessel, Galdera repeats his goal of devouring all life on the twin worlds, including the twelve gods, before transforming Sail the Fallen into the "Dark God of Curses." Despite all odds, the Chosen One and Mydia successfully defeated this form, thwarting the Dark God's resurrection.
Some time after Lyblac and Lucian's defeat in the depths of the Tomb of Ouma, Sail would be freed from the Ring of Fallen's influence, ending the apostles' schemes for good.
Octopath Traveler II[]
Although his origins in Solistia are shrouded in mystery, Galdera also appears as an optional secret boss in Octopath Traveler II, where he can be confronted beyond the Gate of Finis after Al opens it. This spectral gray incarnation is even stronger than his Orsterran counterpart.

Etymology[]
"Galdera" may be derived from the Anglo-Saxon term "galdere," which means "enchanter," "sorcerer," or "diviner." "Galdera" is also Basque for "question," possibly alluding to the dark god's forbidden knowledge and power.
Galdera's name also bears a resemblance to the term "caldera," which refers to a volcanic crater and potentially inspires imagery of the Underworld.
In the Japanese version, Galdera's title, 黒呪帝, is composed by the kanjis of 黒 (black, dark), 呪 (curse, hex) and 帝 (emperor, sovereign). His alternative title, 魔神, is composed by 魔 (magic, demon) and 神 (deity, god).
Trivia[]
Octopath Traveler[]
- Kit can be seen trapped behind the Omniscient Eye when the eye is broken.
- Galdera is one of only two bosses in Octopath Traveler to have more than one separate battle, the other being Simeon. However, even though Galdera is considered the game's true final boss, his battle is optional as it is only accessed through select side quests, and unlike Simeon, the player fights him with all eight main characters.
- In phase one, a Raging Soul is summoned before any actions can be taken. However, once that soul is defeated, two more will only be summoned on the eye's next action. Due to this, it is possible to break the eye and deal enough damage to skip when it summons two souls entirely, moving immediately to the phase where three souls are summoned.
- After defeating Galdera, the lines of dialogue displayed outside the Gate of Finis are similar to what is said in Project Octopath Traveler's first teaser trailer.
- When all eight travelers are present in the scenes when confronting Galdera and after defeating him, the travelers stand in a loose circle that corresponds to their respective region of origin (e.g. Ophilia/Frostlands in between Cyrus/Flatlands to the East/right and H'aanit/Woodlands to the West/left). This orientation also spells out OCTOPATH with the first names of the travelers, starting from Ophilia and moving clockwise.
- Galdera speaks in the plural, referring to himself as "we" and "us."
- Experience-boosting accessories and support skills do not work on Galdera, with the notable exception of Bewildering Grace bonuses.
- According to Yasunori Nishiki, both of his final battle themes in Octopath Traveler ("The One They Call the Witch" and "Daughter of the Dark God") have female vocal lead to match the gender of the person who unsealed Galdera, Lyblac. Similarly, Vide's themes have male vocals to match the voice of Oboro in Octopath Traveler II.[1]
- Octopath Traveler's boss designer, UCMM, didn't personally care for Galdera's design until partway through development. It seemed like no more than a huge black beast, but giving Galdera a human-like head offered the sense of an intelligent godlike being that surpasses man.[2]
- Galdera and Lyblac were created at the very end of Octopath Traveler's production.[3]
- Concept art reveals that at least some of the corpses incorporated into Galdera's body were originally going to be standing apart from his body, wearing tattered clothing. Although not recognizable as any specific characters, these corpses represent persons of various genders, ages, and physiques.[4]
- According to concept art, Galdera's Wailing Soul is female, while the Screaming Soul and Raging Soul are male.[5][4]
- At one point in development, Galdera's first phase was represented by a tentacled sprite with two large glowing eyes, one pink and the other blue.[4]
- Hitomi Furuta made the structural draft for Galdera first, due to all of the special elements, like the two-stage composition, sectional construction, and so on. Finishing it was no mean feat, but the developers put their all into the illustrations, sprites, and animations, resulting in a boss for the ages..[5][4]
- Galdera, the Fallen's battlefield is used as the background in the DLC stage for "Daughter of the Dark God" in Theathrhythm Final Bar Line.
- Alongside the Bestower of All and Vide, Galdera is one of three characters who lacks an overworld spritesheet, instead being directly represented through particle and 3D effects (in Galdera's case, as a giant black flame). All three of these characters are forces beyond human comprehension and serve as the final bosses of their respective games.
- As befits its position during a deadly battle with a being beyond human comprehension, "The One They Call the Witch," features a dramatic choir. Its impressive vocals are sung by Yucca, who uses a technique called coloratura for singing in an extremely high range, thereby expressing Galdera's overwhelming presence. Compared to Galdera's second theme, "The One They Call the Witch" is slightly more subdued in tone, with the drums held back for "Daughter of the Dark God." At the time "The One They Call the Witch" was being produced, the appearance of the final boss hadn't been finalized yet (only the setting and a rough overall image), so the song was created first; Nishiki notes that it was unusual for an Octopath Traveler theme to be produced without being able to see the game's corresponding images, but he thinks that this was a good thing because it allowed him to devote himself to the music without restrictions.[6]
- "Moment of Truth" was created as a transitional theme between Galdera's first and second forms, a sort of "mini-extend song" that would allow for a smooth transition to "Daughter of the Dark God" while retaining some of the melody from "The One They Call the Witch." Incidentally, this theme and the inn jingle ("A Brief Respite") are the only pieces on the soundtrack completely programmed, a fact that many people probably don't realize.[6]
- Following the first form, "Daughter of the Dark God" borrows motifs from "The One They Call the Witch" but scatters them in different forms and orders. In that sense, the two themes are like one. "Daughter of the Dark God" brings out the drums and sounds closer to symphonic rock, its rhythm and percussion being particularly notable; while orchestral percussion can create a powerful and intimidating feel, Nishiki notes that tends to lose the heavy, RPG-style drive. So he deliberately saved the drums to add tempo. From a technical standpoint, he thinks that the phrase from 1:49 is the key and the most exciting part. In "Daughter of the Dark God" this phrase appears in the key of B♭ minor; in "The One They Call the Witch" it starts at 1:34 in E♭ minor with the strings' lower range, so the phrase makes a relatively subdued entrance. In the second form, however, the key changes, and the strings are a perfect fifth higher, creating a perfect sense of tension that makes the phrase come alive. The music's lyrics are invented, so they don't have any particular meaning; Nishiki used certain languages as a reference for the words' feel, but he just chose sounds that go well with the melody. He hopes that listeners will imagine the words in their own way.[6]
Octopath Traveler II[]
- When first encountered beyond the Gate of Finis, Galdera takes the form of a burning eye similar to Vide's.
- Galdera's inclusion in Octopath Traveler II was not planned early in development; his boss battle was added late in the development process. Since the music production phase was already completed, the developers planned to reuse the music from the original Octopath Traveler, but when composer Yasunori Nishiki considered the importance of Galdera to the series and the fact that the battle would be so difficult that players would be using travelers they had spent a long time raising, he felt strongly that they couldn’t just reuse the existing music. He ended up asking producer Masashi Takahashi for one shot at creating a new track, and thus the theme "Underworldly Entity" was born.[7]
- Given the lore about Galdera coming from another world, Nishiki wanted to create a theme that felt a little different from the original Galdera music. In "Underworldly Entity" he combined synth arpeggios, high-tempo loops, and Hollywood-style percussion to express the idea of an outsider from another dimension.[7]
- Galdera appears in a spectral gray color and without Lyblac in Octopath Traveler II, suggesting that his Solistian incarnation may be more ghostly than his flesh-and-blood appearance in Orsterra. This difference may be accounted for by the fact that Galdera is encountered in Octopath Traveler having embodied himself using Kit as a vessel, whereas he has not invested himself in any vessel in Octopath Traveler II.
Champions of the Continent[]
- As an enemy appearing in Side Solistia, Galdera has 42 shield points. In Japanese, this number is considered unlucky, due to 4 being pronounced as 四 (shi, the same as "death"), and two 二 (ni, the same as "you"); read together, the numbers sound like "Your death" or "Die." This meaning matches Galdera's pre-battle speech, where he claims that death is the only truth in existence, and it also follows the Dark God's pattern for unlucky numbers - as he is the 13th Orsterran god.
