History[]
Frigit Isle is located in the far northern reaches of the Sundering Sea, with some calling it "the edge of the world". It was built around a series of abandoned ore mines and was aptly named due to being blanketed in snow all year round, and the extreme weather was known to potentially wreck even the largest, sturdiest vessels with the nearest continent being a four day journey to the prison. Because of this, travel to and from the prison is heavily regulated. The prison itself was built atop the wreckage of former mines lined around the island that had ore at one point.
Criminals were sent here if found guilty of the most heinous crimes, and at one point, held over 300 prisoners at its peak during its eighty-year history. However, due to the prison's deplorable conditions, lives often ended before prison sentences did, an example of a common death being that prisoners were forced to mine for phosphoal, supervised by the warden and guards and succumbing to the extreme cold. Escape from the prison itself was impossible due to the extreme conditions and often any who tried to escape in the chilly waters or died in the prison washed ashore in Cape Cold.
Story[]
The prison's reputation was changed one day when Osvald, a renowned scholar, was sent to Frigit Isle on a life sentence for murder. When there, the current warden, Davids, had a special muzzle fitted over him to stop him from using his magic.
Five years later, the guards and Davids answered a call from a rowdy prisoner who Osvald attacked to get his stolen notebook back. After beating Osvald for the call and departing, he brought all of the prisoners outside to mine for phosphoal the following day where the same prisoner in Osvald's cell began to succumb to the extreme cold before he was brutally finished off by the warden. Later, all of the inmates were sent to the prison town for some free time.
During the next few days, Osvald gathered information on the prison's underground passage, procured some thermal wear, and recruited Emerald, another inmate with a similar backstory to Osvald. Later on, as the warden and guards prepared for a periodic inspection of the prison, Osvald and Emerald began their escape from the prison, but found themselves blocked by Davids and a group of guards, whom they engaged in battle. At its end, Davids was defeated and killed.
As Osvald and Emerald made their way outside, they found that the ship they planned to use for escape was put on high alert, as the warden had raised the alarm of their escape to them. However, Emerald decided to hijack the ship despite Osvald's protests, but ended up being surrounded by the prison forces. To give Osvald time to escape and to divert attention away from him, Emerald used phosphoal to set the ship ablaze, killing himself in the process.
At some point after Osvald's escape, Frigit Isle's deplorable conditions and the wardens' corruption were discovered by the inspectors. As a result, the prison was shut down, and most of the prisoners were relocated.
Trivia[]
- After Osvald escapes, Frigit Isle becomes inaccessible by both fast travel and boat until his story is completed. After his story is complete, Frigit Isle remains inaccessible by fast travel, but it can be reached manually by sailing across the Sundering Sea. Once it has been revisited this way, Frigit Isle's fast travel becomes available once more.
- According to Osvald, Frigit Isle is manned by one warden and 34 guards, and is currently home to 292 prisoners (including Osvald and Emerald).
- At the beginning of his story, Osvald notes that in Frigit Isle's entire 80-year history, not a single prisoner has escaped. However, the old researcher in Cape Cold claims to have found three prisoners washed up on the city's shore, suggesting that some convicts escaped but perished in the process.
- After Frigit Isle has been shut down, a single prisoner can be found standing on a bridge in the prison at night. Designated "Prisoner No. 186666," he was sentenced to imprisonment for 25 years after murdering his son 20 years ago. Why he remains on Frigit Isle is unknown.
