"This is Flamesgrace, the very cradle of the Church of the Sacred Flame." —Townsperson at Flamesgrace's entrance

Flamesgrace is a major town in Octopath Traveler, located within the Frostlands. This snowbound city borders the Flatlands to the south and the Woodlands to the west, and is home to Ophilia Clement, who serves as a devotee in the Flamesgrace Cathedral along with her adoptive family. Flamesgrace is the headquarters of the Order of the Sacred Flame.

Description[]

Nestled within the snowy plains of the Frostlands, Flamesgrace is a large city centered around the Flamesgrace Cathedral, the primary headquarters of the Order of the Sacred Flame. Covered in an ever-present blanket of snow, the town features several cottages aligned around stone steps and pathways lined by iron fences. To the east of the town lies a path of the Cave of Origin, an important area used for trials in the Sacred Flame religion. On the west side of town, a secret hill overlooks the Great Cathedral.

The northern area of Flamesgrace houses the Flamesgrace Cathedral, a massive place of worship. The main hall includes many pews leading to an altar holding the Sacred Flame. Several smaller rooms to the sides of the hall provide study rooms and dormitories for clerics.

Trivia[]

  • The price to restore reputation in Flamesgrace is 5,000 leaves—the highest price in any inner ring city.
  • When being Guided, almost every townsperson in Flamegrace will refer to Ophilia with the title "Sister," and clerics and Knights Ardante will address her by name.
  • Along with Atlasdam, Flamesgrace is one of two cities that appears in Octopath Traveler's title screen, as Ophilia walks up Flamesgrace's central mountain during the title screen's opening cinematic.
  • Flamesgrace's order is maintained by both Knights Ardante and regular soldiers, as evidenced by the Drunken Soldier in the tavern. This soldier even has the key to the prison before the cathedral, rather than a Knight.
  • The Tavern Patron in Flamesgrace references Z'aanta and Hägen, mentioning that a battle against the terrible frostwolf which terrorized the Frostlands "was won with the help of a hunter and his direwolf," who are still lauded for their aid to this day. When Allured, this Tavern Patron begins to tell the tale: "Lend me an ear, Miss. Back in the day, there was this brilliant hunter..."
  • According to the biography of the Anxious Townswoman, monsters and dangerous incidents have been on the rise around Flamesgrace, even posing sufficient concern for her to consider leaving the city for a more peaceful place.
  • The woman guarding a house is among the few townspeople to mention another town in dialogue: "You may think it's cold now, but this is a warm spring zephyr compared to the town of Northreach." She also happens to be guarding a wandering mercenary whom she watches with a vigilant eye at the cost of countless hours of sleep, fearing he'll disappear the moment she looks away. Her possessions suggest that she is drugging him to make him stay: Sleepweed, Herb of Awakening, and Bottle of Sleeping Dust. His own biography says he plans on leaving town soon, but a whole year has already come and gone. Nor can he be Guided/Allured out of the house.
  • According to a townsperson in Flamesgrace Cathedral Entrance, Flamesgrace's tavern has the best mead around.
  • Several of the clerics and Knights Ardante in Flamesgrace have amusing reactions to Allure:
    • "N-no... I should not let myself be tempted... I must not...ah, Flame have mercy!"
    • "What transgressions have I made to be tempted by such a dance?"
    • "I see. This is a revelation from the almighty Aelfric. He wishes me to provide you with guidance."
    • "How fascinating! Even your dance is illuminated by the light of the Sacred Flame."

Etymology[]

"Flamesgrace" is comprised of "Flame's" + "grace," referring to the elegance or goodwill of the Sacred Flame. The Flame "graces" the city from the Great Cathedral, blessing it with Aelfric's warmth and protection.

General Trivia[]

  • Yasunori Nishiki composed "Flamesgrace, Guiding Light" with two leading concepts: "cold but warm" and "a town of churches." The flickering synth in the background uses the same tone as the Frostlands's theme, expressing the falling snow. By combining this sound with a melody that represents the warmth of fire, the theme sounds both cold and warm. When the melody changes halfway through, the church theme emerges; Nishiki wrote this melody with the image of a song that the Order of the Sacred Flame has handed down since ancient times. If he had more time, he would have liked to play a more solemn arrangement of the melody inside the churches in-game.[1]
