Ten years prior to the events of Octopath Traveler, Geoffrey Azelhart was murdered by three mysterious men dressed in black robes and bearing tattoos of a crow — one with the tattoo on his left arm, one on his right arm, and one on his neck. Geoffrey was murdered for discovering strictly classified information about the Obsidians, a powerful criminal organization of mercenaries operating within Orsterra. In the skirmish following Geoffrey's murder, House Azelhart fell into ruin. Primrose, Geoffrey's daughter who had witnessed the murder take place as a little girl, began wandering Orsterra, searching for the trail of the men who murdered her father so she could exact vengeance. Meanwhile, one of the former servants to House Azelhart, Arianna, began searching for a new job, and by unknown circumstances (though suffering in poverty after House Azelhart fell is strongly implied) ended up as a prostitute in a human trafficking business operated by a man called Rufus, who is later revealed to be the man who bears the mark of the crow on his left arm.

Primrose's search for the left-hand man eventually takes her to Stillsnow, where she is reunited with Arianna, who is happy to see her Lady alive and grown into a beautiful young woman. Primrose gently persuades an embarrassed Arianna to confess that she now works in a secret brothel within the village as a prostitute, and that the Master bears a crow tattoo on his left arm.

While Primrose is infiltrating Rufus' headquarters with help from information given to her by Arianna, Rufus is approached by Father Eschard. The bishop tells Rufus that he once had a daughter he was raising into a lady, with long, beautiful hair that he loved to stroke, and he would dress her in the finest silks he could, before the son of a minor Lord sullied her, which lead to her committing suicide in shame from being dishonored, on the eve of her wedding day. Father Eschard pledges his loyalty to Rufus in exchange for Rufus helping him deliver vengeance to the entire House of the lord whose son dishonored his daughter, which Rufus agrees to. In the meantime, Rufus offers to give Arianna to Father Eschard because she is of a similar age to the bishop's deceased daughter, much to his gratitude.

Shortly after however, Primrose confronts Rufus for murdering her father, and after she and her companions engage him in battle, Rufus is defeated and killed, which frees Arianna from his power. Father Eschard is never seen or heard from again, and it is unknown if Primrose ever learns of his existence.

Trivia[]

  • It is chillingly implied that Father Eschard has incestuous sexual feelings for his deceased daughter, and that the one who drove his daughter to commit suicide is guilty of sexual harassment, or worse, rape.
