- "The Knights Ardante should be alert to more followers of the dark flame. There may still be more of them out there than we even realize. We mustn't let our guard down yet." —In Wispermill, sidequest complete
Eliza Woodward is a character in Octopath Traveler. She is the leader of the Knights Ardante and serves as one of the deuteragonists of H'aanit's story (alongside Z'aanta).
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Eliza wears white knight's garb and has long chestnut hair.
Personality[]
Eliza is a calm and steadfast warrior, devoted to protecting the realm. She is a friend of Z'aanta's and has bailed him out of his gambling debts in the past, and though she does not hesitate to enlist Z'aanta's aid as a hunter, she admits that putting him in danger leaves a bad taste in her mouth.
Story[]
Prior to the events of H'aanit's story, Eliza has established herself as a frequent employer and partner of Z'aanta's services as a hunter. She is aware of Z'aanta's vices and attempts to keep him focused on their objective.
Eventually, Eliza asked Z'aanta to help her hunt a monster known as Redeye. She confesses that she found the act distasteful, as she feared that Z'aanta would meet a terrible fate, but the safety of the realm had to come before their friendship.
Following Z'aanta's failure and petrification, Redeye flees to Marsalim, with Eliza and her soldiers in pursuit. She sends a messenger to inform H'aanit of the monster's location, while her forces continue to hunt Redeye. Thanks to the Knights' aid in fending off hordes of monsters, H'aanit is able to enter the Grimsand Ruins and defeat Redeye in its lair.
Relationships[]
H'aanit[]
Eliza is familiar with H'aanit, the adoptive daughter of Z'aanta. She worked with her to help slay Redeye in the Marsalim Catacombs.
Z'aanta[]
Eliza is shown to hire Z'aanta whenever a dangerous beast needs to be hunted. She cares deeply for his well being, but will scold him for drinking and gambling whenever he is on a mission.

Etymology[]
"Eliza," a shortened version of "Elizabeth," is a name of Hebrew origin, meaning "God is my oath" or "pledged to God." Eliza's name reflects her piety and devotion to her cause as a Knight Ardante.
Eliza's surname "Woodward" originates from medieval English, derived from the Old English elements "wudu" (meaning "wood") and "weard" (equating to "ward," meaning "guardian"). As such, the name was used to designate a forester employed to look after the trees and game in a forest. In Eliza's case, it highlights her status as a warden and protector of the Church.
Quotes[]
- "Hello Sister. Thank you for your time." —When Guided
- "I've heard rumors, but the dances of the Sunlands are even more impressive in person." —When Allured
- "Please excuse me." —Parting Ways
- "You wish to fight me? Very well, but you seem quite strong. I like that in a man." —When Challenged
- "Okay! Let's see what you've got!" —When Provoked
- "You've got some ways to go before you can match Z'aanta!" —Failing Provoke
- "You must leave here immediately. Do so, and I shall let you go freely!" —Failing a Path Action
Trivia[]
- According to Ophilia, Eliza is well-respected in the Church of the Sacred Flame and known as one of its most loyal servants, to the extent that "she is a role model to us all."
- Although she does not appear there in-game, Eliza is reported to be stationed in Marsalim on most days.
- Captain Bale reveals in his side story that nearly a decade ago, the head of the Knights Ardante was a man named Lord Woodward, implying some relation to Eliza. Lianna confirms in her side story that Lord Woodward is Eliza's father.
- In one version of her NPC concept art, Eliza wears a white headband and red trimming on her robes. These details likely belong to a scrapped early design, as they are not present in the final game.[1]
