- "The treasure you were after is a family heirloom known as the dragonstones. The dragonstones have been in my family for generations... But the stones were stolen during the chaos following my parents' passing. Fortunately, Heathcote was able to recover the sapphire stone." —Cordelia Ravus
The dragonstones are a collection of four priceless orbs that serve as the keys to the Gate of Finis. They contain a mysterious power which is said to be derived from the magic of dragons, and each comes in a different color: sapphire, ruby, emerald, and gold.
History[]
217 years prior to the events of Octopath Traveler, Odin Crossford sealed the Gate of Finis shut using the dragonstones he obtained in the east. The dragonstones passed into Beowulf's possession, and he in turn granted them to his friend, the knight Oscar Ravus. The Ravus Household became guardian of the dragonstones, safeguarding them over the decades.
However, roughly two centuries later, the Obsidians stole the dragonstones on Lyblac's behalf. Lyblac used the dragonstones to unlock the Gate of Finis in an attempt to release Galdera, the Dark God imprisoned there. The dragonstones were then scattered across Orsterra and fell into various unscrupulous hands.
Story[]
After the theft, Cordelia Ravus sought to recover the dragonstones. She sent her butler, Heathcote, to retrieve the sapphire dragonstone, and recruited the master thief Therion to reclaim the others.
In Noblecourt, Therion discovered that the ruby dragonstone had fallen into the possession of an obsessive scholar named Orlick. After battling Orlick, Therion recovered the ruby dragonstone and brought it back to Cordelia for safekeeping.
Therion next traveled to Wellspring, where the emerald dragonstone was being sold on the Black Market. Despite Therion's efforts, a thief named Darius managed to steal the dragonstone and escape to Northreach.
In Northreach, Therion found both the emerald and gold dragonstones. After a confrontation with Darius, he succeeded in retrieving the dragonstones, which now rest safely inside Ravus Manor.
Trivia[]
- According to a scholar named Barham, the dragonstones are not meant to be held by human hands. When mortals do come into possession of the dragonstones, they often end up ensorcelled by the stones' power, as demonstrated by Orlick (and, to a lesser extent, Darius).
- Each time that Therion retrieves a dragonstone during his story, that stone appears on display inside Ravus Manor.
- Therion initially finds the sapphire dragon unimpressive, remarking that it looks "like an ordinary gemstone."
- In her travel banter, Ophilia mentions that she can sense "a strange power" sleeping within the dragonstones.
- Therion theorizes that the dragonstones may have granted Darius the power to control his large gang of thieves, suggesting that the dragonstones can exert a form of loyalty-ensuring influence on one's followers. Coincidentally or not, shortly after Darius loses the dragonstones, his thieves betray and murder him.
