- "Serving as the bishop of Goldshore keeps me busy day-in and day-out. It's gotten to the point that I don't even have time for personal correspondence. Even penning a letter takes more time than I have at my disposal. But I do wish I could at least let my friend know that I am well, if far too busy..." —In Goldshore Cathedral
Donovan is a character in Octopath Traveler. He serves as the bishop of Goldshore Cathedral.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Donovan has brown hair and wears a white robe with a blue and gold stole.
Personality[]
Donovan is steadfast and devoted to his faith, even in the face of his daughter's kidnapping. However, he is prone to severe stress, as demonstrated by his failure to prepare for the Kindling and his subsequent collapse when contemplating the threat to his daughter. He confesses that he contemplated fulfilling the kidnappers' demands at one point, even though this would require him to betray his ideals and steal Aelfric's Lanthorn from Ophilia.
Story[]
Bishop Donovan's ancestors were servants of the Sacred Flame, but Donovan himself decided to become a priest when visited Flamesgrace with his father. Eventually, he married a woman who shared his faith, and together they had a daughter.
About a decade before the events of Octopath Traveler, just after he married, Donovan befriended a man named Bale. Unfortunately, dark days followed, for Donovan's wife was kidnapped in the early years of their marriage. Bale was arrested as the primary suspect, but Donovan and the leader of the Knights Ardante believed Bale to be innocent, and therefore spared Bale's life.
During her Chapter 3, Ophilia meets Bishop Donovan in Goldshore Cathedral. She is ready to proceed with the Kindling, but Donovan has failed to finish the ritual's preparations, and Ophilia realizes that he is under duress. After some investigation, she discovers that his daughter, Lysa, was kidnapped and held hostage in the Seaside Grotto, with the threat that Donovan must hand over the Flamebearer's sacred ember if he wanted to see Lysa again.
Donovan resolved to hold true to his faith and refused to comply with the kidnappers' demands. However, he could not bear to picture his daughter hurt by such evil men, and thus collapsed in grief.
Ophilia hastened to the Seaside Grotto, defeated the kidnappers in battle, and returned Lysa to him unharmed. To this day, Donovan continues to carry out his duties in the Goldshore Cathedral, though they keep him too busy to maintain correspondence with his friends.
Etymology[]
Donovan is an Irish name that means "dark," ironic given Donovan's association with the light of the Sacred Flame.
