"I am Dolcinaea Luciel, continental superstar! The realm rejoices when I dance. There is none who can compare to my splendor." —Dolcinaea

Dolcinaea Luciel is a character in Octopath Traveler II. She is Agnea's rival and is the final boss of her story.

A dancer and opera singer who has attained worldwide fame as a superstar, Dolcinaea takes great pride in how far her effort has brought her, an attitude which manifests in her conceited behavior.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Dolcinaea wears a large blue gown and has voluminous blond hair tied into a large bun.

Personality[]

As one of the most renowned dancers in Solistia, Dolcinaea exudes an air of untouchable confidence, grace, and beauty. Such an air also makes her come off as conceited and arrogant, as evidenced when she attempted to buy out the entire eastern district of Sai despite the protests of the residents. Her haughty actions are rooted in her insecurity, as she hates to remember her humble upbringing as a orphaned vagrant in Sai. She spends most of her earnings on treatments, costumes, and donations to various causes.

After being bested by Agnea on the stage, Dolcinaea finally overcomes her pride and once again embraces the teachings she learned from Cuani, who inspired her to take up dancing in the first place.

Despite her cultured appearance, Dolcinaea does not appear to be particularly bright, as she mistook the dumbbell gifted to her by her bodyguard Veronica for some sort of musical instrument.

History[]

(I don't think this is where I should be going at the moment...)
The following section contains potential story spoilers!

Prior to Story[]

Dolcinaea grew up in Sai as an orphan who was taken in by Platt and his wife. Twenty years before the events of Octopath Traveler II, a traveling dancer named Cuani came into town and after watching her perform, Dolcinaea wanted to dance like her, so she started practicing. Cuani witnessed her practicing and began to teach her how to dance. Some time after, Dolcinaea left Sai and began to hone her dancing and musical skills, eventually becoming a famed superstar all over the world.

Story[]

Dolcinaea arrived in New Delsta to perform for the people at the theater. There, she performed her hit "All for You" to the delight of the crowd, which included Agnea, a traveler seeking stardom. Later, after Agnea defeated La'mani, the theater's manager, in a confrontation, she appeared with her bodyguard Veronica to stop things from escalating further and demanded La'mani honor her request to lay off a bar he vandalized earlier. Soon, after Agnea left New Delsta, Dolcinaea and Veronica discussed future plans for a certain place that they paid for.

Dolcinaea eventually made her way to Sai, where she intended to tear down the slums to build a more prosperous place called Dolcinaealand, to the townspeople's anger. She then retreated to the top of Dragonridge with Veronica to oversee things, but was confronted by Agnea, who helped the townspeople stop her team from destroying the town. Irritated, Dolcinaea sent Veronica in an attempt to get rid of Agnea, but her bodyguard ended up defeated. Despite this, she complimented Agnea and decided to settle things with her in Merry Hills, where the Grand Gala was being held. She and her entourage retreated from the area, but not before destroying Cuani's statue in the town square.

At Merry Hills, Dolcinaea started the show at the Stage of the Moon and Sun, where she called Agnea up on stage after the latter arrived despite being late due to La'mani's attempted intervention. There, they faced off against each other and though Dolcinaea had the crowd on her side at first, Agnea began to gradually gain support from her family, friends, and eventually more of the crowd. They then continued their battle, with Agnea emerging victorious. Defeated, but at peace, Dolcinaea left Merry Hills with Veronica.

After the Grand Gala, Dolcinaea visited Sai: East District, where she sang for the children and helped rebuild the city.

Veronica's Next Chapter[]

After the events at Merry Hills, Dolcinaea returned to New Delsta to continue her performances and tours. One day, Veronica came by to give her a gift as an anniversary on the day they first met: a dumbbell, which delighted Dolcinaea. After briefly reminiscing on their past, they proceeded to get ready for the next show, although to Veronica's dismay, Dolcinaea intended to use the dumbbell for a musical purpose vice its true one.

Etymology[]

"Dolcinaea" is likely derived from the name "Dulcinea," which stems from the Spanish word "dulce" (meaning "sweet"). In the famous Spanish novel Don Quixote, Dulcinea is a character fabricated by the titular hero when he mistook a commoner for a princess. Dolcinaea's name therefore reflects both her sweet voice and her origins as a humble pauper who rose to worldwide fame and glory.

Dolcinaea's surname, "Luciel," means "light of God" or "light of heaven," symbolizing her radiance as a star.

Trivia[]

  • Dolcinaea is one of only two main character final chapter bosses to have more than one separate battle, the other being Mugen.
    • She is also the only main chapter boss in Octopath Traveler II to not have her battle sprite disappear into smoke like the others after her health drops to 0 during the first fight.
  • While her first battle plays the final chapter boss theme "For the Dawn", her second battle plays the "Song of Hope" instead of any variation of "For the Dawn" like the other travelers' final bosses, making her the only final chapter boss to do so. Additionally, completing her first phase in battle does not cue the usual victory fanfare.
  • Dolcinaea is also the only antagonist to possess her own pre-battle introduction music: "In Pursuit of Applause" (a variation of her signature opera theme, "All for You").
  • She and Roque Brilliante are the only final chapter bosses whose actions and motivations are unrelated to the Moonshade Order's agenda.
  • Dolcinaea is one of only three bosses to not be killed in the main character's respective final chapters, the others being Roque and Harvey.
  • Dolcinaea's journal, the Dancer's Journal, can be found in the abandoned warehouse in Sai: East District.
  • According to Ochette, Dolcinaea smells lonely.
  • After Veronica's sidequest is completed, Dolcinaea and Veronica relocate to New Delsta: Theater.
  • As a summonable NPC, Dolcinaea has a strength of 8, wields a staff in combat, and possesses the special skill "Dolcinaea's Medley." The latter comprises three phases, all based off her boss battles: Crimson Zeal (fire damage to all enemies), Shooting Star of Fate (three hits of damage), and Eternal Slumber (which has a chance to put all enemies to sleep for a significant number of turns). She may also use the battle skills Moonstep (which raises one ally's evasion, speed, and elemental attack) and Polar Ice (three hits of Ice damage to one target).
  • Yasunori Nishiki decided to compose "All For You" after deciding that Dolcinaea needed a song specifically to convey her vast talent as the world’s number one superstar. Whereas Agnea’s music tends to have a softness that reflects her rural upbringing combined with a sense of inner strength, Dolcinaea's has a more operatic atmosphere to reflect the way she overwhelms with her sheer presence. Because Agnea’s story is rich in special features, Nishiki also ended up making an extra Battle Extend piece just for Dolcinaea ("In Pursuit of Applause").[1]
