At first Derryl insists that no one can understand him, but when he realizes that Emil has risked his life to retrieve his brooch, Derryl charges headlong in danger in order to save his friend, telling him to forget about the stupid trinket. Story[]
A few weeks prior to the events of Octopath Traveler, Derryl’s mother died and he became bitter with grief. In Ophilia’s Chapter 2, after she performs the Kindling ceremony at Saintsbridge Cathedral, she takes the time to explore the town, where she comes across Derryl and Nate harassing Emil for losing Derryl’s brooch. Ophilia then offers to help Emil look for the brooch, much to Emil’s gratitude. He then tells Ophilia about the circumstances surrounding the death of Derryl’s mother. The two of them look for the brooch, but to no avail.
Ophilia visits Derryl and persuades him to come with her, where they find Emil still looking for Derryl’s brooch, much to Derryl’s surprise as he had assumed Emil would have given up by then. Ophilia and Derryl go to talk to Emil, only to learn from Nate that he had chased a dog into The Murkwood because he saw it had something shiny in its mouth that he was certain was Derryl’s brooch. Worried about Emil endangering himself, Derryl gives chase. He eventually finds Emil deep in the Murkwood, where they are attacked by Hróðvitnir, who is revealed to not be a dog but a wolf. Ophilia arrives and fends off Hróðvitnir, and Emil finds Derryl’s brooch where the wolf fell. Moved by Emil’s determination to find his brooch and ashamed of himself for lashing out at Emil in his bitterness over his mother’s death, Derryl apologizes to him and the two amend their friendship.
